  1. What pop up material? There may be an angelfire add but nothing bad. If so I promise you its not from our site because it don't pop up when I go there.
  2. Thanks Sasori Te However I do disagree with your statement about getting rid of the Heian Series. Only for this reason. We are going to have young kids who can't do the advanced kata and were going to have older people who physically can't prefrom some of the moves in kata like Empi, Kanku Sho, Unsu, etc. I think for that reason alone the Heian kata a very important. I teach the Taikoyokia series as well espically to kids below 10. At our Shotokan dojo we do 29 kata. https://www.anglefire.com/wv2/wvka is the list of when we do what.
  3. Fragbot Glad you enjoyed the article LOL. I read your replyes and honestly I have forgot some of what you said so Im just going to hit a few here. 1. I don't think I ever said kata can replace heavy bag work, sparring, or focus pad type training. I said kata can be a good subistute for those methods. This makes it very useful because we don't always have a heavy bag or a sparring partner or some mits. All you need to do kata is yourself. You really dont need much room if you work shitting all your stances you can do kata in about a 2ft square. 2. To me Martial Arts includes a few differant aspects. Of course you must be a skilled fighter but its much more its exercise, social skills aka confidence training, moral development, etc... NOT everyone in fact very few people actually get into MA and stay in MA to be a fighter. Those of us who will do it the rest of lives do it for other reasons. IMO there is a huge differance in a guy who trains for 10 years and competes than a person who trains their entire life. The one who trains their entire life is a Martial Artist the one who competes is a fighter. Thats just my take.... 3. The last point I can think of right now without rereading. No one will ever train like they did 100 years ago. WHY? because of the modren world. SD is much simpler today its called guns, and mace. So hard core training by the masses is not needed. Add to that people today dont have time. I know you worked in the fields and stuff back then but you had time to train today we must go to a dojo and train a few hrs a week. People have work, school, church, family, social events, etc that people 100 years ago did not have to contend with. One other point the world today is safer. Yeah i know that will take some heat but honestly it is. You may be mugged or something but you pretty much know who is good and who is not. You travel in a car and you are basically safe. 100 years ago you traveld by walking or on horse thus you are much more likely to be attacked. Think about it. Hard core training died with techknology of the 20th century.
  4. Thanks Knowing a kata and Knowing a kata are differant things. Anyone can memorize a set pattren of moves and preform at a very high speed and look like the best Martial Artisit ever. However that is not know a kata. Yes the first thing you must do is learn and preform the kata very well without pause. However to KNOW the kata you must be able to teach it. By teach it I mean know several sets of applications, understand where it came from and why it is in your style. Be albe to see how it connects to other kata and what hidden techinques are in it. There is much more to knowing a kata and KNOWING a kata. Its more mental than anyting. This is one of the major reasons I am so against kid black belts because their mind can't think in the higher leavels to develope this stuff.
  5. Controling your emothions is one of the biggest things that should seperate Dans from Kuy ranks IMO. Just relax and do EVERYTHING as hard and quick as you can. Bust it on tests.
  6. Their are a lot of MA schools that is tied to any given religion. We do meditation and I tell my students if they wish to pray then thats cool. The teachings of MA such as no first attack, high morals, respcet, etc go hand in hand with Christianity and Buddhism IMO.

    Kwanku sho

Very good site One of the few Shotokan kata I have yet to study in detail good luck.
  15. Shotokan only has 12, 25, 26, or 29 depending on the group you are with and in my mind thats plenty. Its nice to play arround with others but in the end you need a base your good at and no more than 30 kata could be prefected in a life time. IMO. I know the moves to 22 Shotokan Kata. However I would only claim that I am good at about 10 of them. I have been doing Shotokan for a bit over 10 years so don't rush it.
  16. sounds like a winner to me
  17. All are good sugestions. I sort of did the same thing. I was 18 when I got mine and I wanted to Coach so I went into education and became a teacher so now I teach, Coach and teach.
  18. Well when I was in college me a guy was sparring in our dojo. The dojo was half a room that had been spereated by a built in partition. (cheaply made) Anyhow I hit the guy with a spinning thrust kick and he was next to the wall. The person who built the wall left wide spaces between the 2x4's anyhow. He hit the wall and proceeded to go though both pieces of drywall. We dont break either. I got 2 rebreakable boards we play arround with from time to time but thats about it.
  19. Yeah you may want to get your friends to hold a few pencils between their hand instead. LOL No really buy some rebreakable boards they work good. I Sugest the palm and elbo. They are safer and can lead to a lot of power. But breaking is NOT very important in the grand scheme of Martial Arts. If you got guts you can break it don't matter what you know or how much you train.
  20. LOL be good guys to each his own.
