Christians get hung up in the turn the other cheek thing. But the God I know in the old testment was a pretty bad dude and Jesus himself said when in Rome do as the Romans do. LOL. Its not justification but IMO MA can do nothing but make your faith stronger.

who do you think is the greatest fighter in the world?
G95champ replied to Akira13's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Depends on the rules, the event, and IMO the era. -
Only reason to have knee pain is because you got bad knees. The stance would not hurt your knee IMO. At least meaning they wont make good knees bad its not like a catcher is baseball our depth is made by sinking the hips more so than pressure on the knees.

G. Funakoshi when he started teaching did not belive in style. All he done was Karate-do. Shotokan was a name given to his teaching by his students later on. Shoto being his pen name and Kan meaning his house. So the House of Shoto became Shotokan because thats where the trained at. Again Funakoshi was big on the idea of not having a style. This is why Shotokan has a lot of hard and soft kata in it. His sons and students later gave Shotokan some of its traits that we think of it today like the low stance. Funakoshi NEVER taught that. Funakoshi never referes to his karate at Shotokan but as Karate or Karate-Do. Funakoshi had 2 teachers Master Azato and Itsou. So he pulled his art from them as well as his training with Master Kano (judo) in toyko later on.

IMO when a school has to take young kids like that they are doing to to pay the rent or get rich. LOL Kids are a gold mine you can sell them anything and mommy and daddy will buy it but as far as teaching them you can't do it. They are unalbe to think in the abstract. Again sure they can do all the physical moves but they don't know or understand what they are doing. Again they are exceptions Im sure but as a rule pre teens can't understand the ideas behind the art. Thus its wasted money and time.

Which art (under these "rules")
G95champ replied to Kirves's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
based on your situation I would say Mace or Pepper Spray. LOL. MT may be better because their low kicks work more like sweeps on a person who don't know there comming. Problem with judo and bjj is you do have cokes and joint locks and you don't want. Then to be good at judo and bjj for that matter its going to take some time. MT is a strikning art you can learn quick at least the basic idea of kicking and striking, Its up front, no hidden junk in kata's. I don't know much about Kava Magra (sp) but it may be the answere. Quick stricks and power takedowns. Sounds like the art you really need is Akkido but it will take time. -
karate will work just like anyother style will work if you can remain calm and do what you have been taught.

Gichin Funakoshi karate-do koyhan (sp) big black book with a ugle statue on the front coset 40 to 50 bucks.

I never have. I only teach MA so I can train. People find me. I don't do it for the money so I have never had to promote myself thus I can take students that I trust and am not forced to take on (bad people) lol....

I've taught kids and trained with kids and I know some kids are differant but as a rule I would not put any kid in Martial Arts until they are 12. Anything below that is just to young. Why 12 well thats the age they can't play little league anymore and not all are good enought to play JR high or High School sports so its a good transition time. Before that age they are just mocking the moves and not understanding them as well. Sure they are athletic and can do splits, rolls, combo kicks but what do they KNOW? IMO not much. Its a waste of time and money. Thats just my 2 cents.

Need some combos for beginners
G95champ replied to TLynn03's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Some moves do work better with others but in general its something you learn for yourself by just doing it. Start with only 2 moves a pucnh and kick or kick and punch. Always try and block starting off that will help you build your speed. Don't get caught up in the idea of landing a big 10 hit combo if your lucky to get 2 shots in on sometone of equal rank on a given day without thim hitting you back your doing ok. -
what easier to learn from books- striking or grappling?
G95champ replied to TJS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would think striking would be simpler to learn from a book only because you can see pictures better. As to in grappleing you can feel the person on top of you. From my limited experience on the ground the one thing I know is to be a good grappler you got to remain calm. I guess thats true for anything but in striking you are only in contact for a split second. Thus I would think it is simpler to see how to throw a kick, punch, smash, etc. But in grappeling their is so much weight shifting, and balanced I would think learing it from a book would be very hard. I do have a few BJJ tapes I bought several years ago and unless you got someone to work with their useless. But anytime I want to shadow box or learn a kata from a book I just get up and do it. -
How does a student have to eran a rank
G95champ replied to yireses's topic in Instructors and School Owners
We have set things you have to do on a given test. Most early test consist of Basic moves (stance, punches, kicks) one kata and either SD or 3 step sparring. As you move up in rank the basics become more complex and your ability is based on speed, power, focus, and not just techinque. You may have to do more kata than one and you will have to explain its applications, Sparring moves to one step and then to freestyle by the time of you Dan test. -
welcome

Im not a fan of testing before your ready but sometimes it does one good to fail and step back and take a look at your progress. You learn much more from losing than winning.

help!!I suck at sparring!!
G95champ replied to TLynn03's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Just takes time. LOL Rome was not built in a day. The big thing about sparring is fear of getting hit once that passes most do ok. -
Agreed If its a Ju Jitsu school you won't do kata. You will do just enough stand up to get by with I would guess. If its a karate school and you have yet to do a kata I think I would ask. Some teachers are going away from kata because of the populairty of NEW Martial Arts. Thats not a bad thing but I would not train there. LOL Teachers do get in cycles oh where the focus on differant things. So ask and see what he says about it.
