Its done a lot. However its usually only done with lower kuy ranks and not so much high ones. Because some people are just more athletic than others. Its ok to jump just realize you are. Keep in mind its better to be a really good low rank than an ok or avg. higher rank.

Thats pretty simple the anser is Giin and Wankan. Because they were left out of the best karate series anyhow. I personally love both of them. I like Giin better than Jittie and Jion. I also find Wankan very fun. Although they are not in the best karate series I think they both LOOK like Shotokan kata. With that said the one I don't think of as being shotokan is Gankanku. However I think he holds a very special place because of the lack of focus on balance and one legged techinques in the style. But I do think it is the ugly ducklying kata.

As most of you know by know he was killed yesterday. Tilman turned down a 3.6million dollar deal with the AZ Cards to join the US Army Rangers after 911. Sad day. Thoughts and prayers with him and his family because his actions is what being a hero is all about.

Geez thats high. For 90 bucks a month you better be getting some good instruction and not missing classes.

Several reasons 1. To help the school make some money and stay open. 2. Pay for the belt, certificate, registeration, etc. 3. Makes people take it a bit more seriously if they fail because the lose their money lol. I only charge what it costs me for the belt and stuff. I don't have a prob. with testing fees as long as its not testing for 25 belts just to make money and not teach. If you are taught you dont mind what it costs.

geez I hate (shotokan) Gankanku with passion. Freaking one legged moves lol.... Wish I could do it well. Heck I wish I could do it half way welll lol. does Chinto look like any shotokan kata.? Nijushisho, Sochin, Gojoshisho or Dai??? Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Hands down the answer is Kanku Dai. Why its a combo of the 5 Heian kata and the tekki series. Its a very long kata and works on both offense, defense, jumping, throwing, punching, kicking, odd strikes, etc. IMO Kanku Dai is the ROOT kata of Shotoakn. Others Bassai Dai - anytime you see it you know its a shotokan school. Very powerful and great focus on hips. Sochin - I love this kata but Shotokan students rarely pricatice the sochin stance except for the kata. So I would not say its good pick. Hangetsu - see Sochin Gichin Funakoshi said the big 4 Shotokan kata were Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion and Empi. I agree....

There is a few things to look at. 1. Your not as good as you think you are. Sorry but we sometimes get false impressions of ourselves. Its hard to step back and view oursleves. The reason I say this is because if you have time in class to watch others and see how good or bad they are then you are not giving it your all. FOCUS!!!! 2. Yeah he may have his picks but thats his right. Some people IMO do get ranks and should get ranks even if they are not a athlete. Brains and Knowledge make up for lack of ability at times I do think. 3. As many have said maybe he is just pushing you are testing you to see if you will break. Your greatest lessons are learned not when you pass but when you fail..... Remember that..... 4. Bottom line its his class. I think he SHOULD set down with each student after a test and tell them whats good and bad and so on but at the same time he is the teacher and he had the right to give any grade he sees fit and as long as you pay to take the class you dont have any right to question that but he prob. knows more than you do thus is why he is teaching. Again don't take anything I said the wrong way but sometimes people post nice excuses Im just trying to toss up other ideas. Good luck in your training.

For you guys who know him see if he is intrested in publishing a book with his info in it. Id love to have a copy of all the kata work he had done. I started to print off the entire site once but figured it would take too much ink. LOL. I hope its back up soon. Its a really great site. More importantly I hope he writes a book with the info he had on his site. It would sell and sell well IMO.

Chinte and Gankanku are VERY differant not much of anything alike in them. Gankanku has a lot of balance and one legged stances and it works on a straight line with blocks and attacks. Chintie on the other hand works stance shifting, throws, Grabs and escapes. Only one move for a split second are you on one foot in Chitie as opposed to half of Gankanku.

ah pacific, sai, its good to see you guys again how has everything been.
-
Work you shifting and side stepping. When they rush block and move and look to counter with moves such as roundhouse kick, backfiests, etc. Use your jab and lead leg front kick to slow down their rush. A spinning back kick may be a good idea as well espically if they think you are going to run. But work your distancing and counter stepping to move arround the opponent while they rush you.

Almost the same way I came across it. But at the time I was not hurt just without a dojo.

Yeah try and think of every possible situation and then apply that move. Ask your self the following. 1 offense or defense 2 his left or right side 3 his from or his back 4 weapon def or open hand 5 could this be a throw 6 how does the move before or after set this up 7 is it used more than once in this kata or other kata and what is it doing there thats just a few things i try and look at when breaking down kata Im sure there is more.

Our Black Belt test usually consistes of Kanku Dai and 2 other kata most of the times its Bassai Dai and Hangetsu but the 2nd and 3rd Tekki are sometimes used as well. We usually save Empi, Jion, Jittie, etc for post Dan training. In our classes we send the people below Brown belts home 15mins or so early now. All the high ranks do 20 kata in about 30mins. Great training and it keeps us all fresh. We do 5 Heian, 3 Tekkie, Both Bassai's and Kanku's, Jion, Jittie, Hangetsu, Chinttie, Wankan, Gankanku, Empi, and Giin.
