My reason was to help me become a better football player. So as a complimentary sport.

No need to hide it. Shotokan and TKD are IMO very differant and if you teacher is aware of your past training he may be albe to help you adjust quicker.

Agreed 100% A few months ago I went back to taking class instead of teaching class. Man had I missed working basics. After a month or so now I feel so much faster, strong, better at my karate than I do before. I have no picked up any new moves in fact Ive gotten rid of a few because they were "fancy" ineffective. We often look for new ideas when we must realize there prob is not any new ideas left. Basics stink to do but they make you better no question.

Bassai Dai has several good applications one may use. Sounds like you just found one you like. Keep your mind open because there are many for each move in every kata. Thats the beauty of kata espically Shotokan kata.

https://www.24fightingchicken.com thats shotokan kata but some may be the same.

Its good that you realize that. All to often people think they are much better than they are because of things like this. We only teach one kata per belt up to Black Belt leval. Then we throw a few at you but its still your choice on which one to work on and whatever. I don't have a prob. with lower belts learing extra kata but time needs to be spent on each one they learn and not just passing them by. Esipcially if its a traditional style.

Ive been away for some time just want to see who is still here and who are the new Shotokan guys at KF? Please post a response and we can trade some ideas on training.

Jams or sprains to toes, fingers, arms, legs, etc. Just from contact or poor stretching.

Because it is the most practiced form of karate in the USA there are a lot of BAD teachers out there who dont know what their teaching and thus Shotokan has gotten a bad name because some do not teach it as Funakoshi taught it. Much like TKD which I am not a fan of but its so public a lot of people see the bad and forget the good. Ture Shotokan is anything but watered down. Its very basic and simple. Not many kicks or strikes. No more than 29 kata and as few as 12 depending on your association. In fact that is the usualy concer I hear about it, thats its to simple and not complex enough. However it is a very deep art with lots of throws, takedowns, locks, weapon def, etc that you will one day dig out of the kata. Can you tell what art I practice. LOL

Shodan test I took mine May of 1996. Wow. Go hard, stay low, keep focus, and remember you have free sparring last. Gosh I was so tired by the time I had to spar. I sparred for 30mins. First 10 or 15 I did good. The next 10 I was taking it. The final few I was haning on for dear life. LOL Good luck I have the FSKA standards and the JKA requirments if you need some advicer or help just email or pm me. Goood luck

The hardest work out I have had as far as sweat came in a cardio kickboxing class. LOL Our Shotokan classes build leg muscle and we get a pretty good sweat going. I took a few MT lessons and I was sore but that was because I was beat up. JuJitsu Ive played with it some as well and wrestling all day and stuff is tiresome espically when you really go at it. Judo, Hapikido, Wrestling. I hate falling so I was sore but yeah its a good workout. Fact is the style dont matter its how hard you work in class. Thats up to you not the teacher.

Its not about the championships. I don't take part in any contests. I train for the love of the art. These past few weeks have been a great time in my training. Just minor things like I was dropping my elbow, or a move in a kata, or giving away a techinque in sparring. My teacher's teacher told me Ive helped him as well because he usually just gets young students and he was happy to work with someone who was the same but differant. We are going to start up some classes together soon. Again I stress never think you know it all. I have always said I have forgotten more than I know but it has been proven to me this week. Advice for you new blackbelts. Dont rush to teach get your stuff down. When you make Dan you feel like you own the world but one day you will realize there is a lot out there for you yet to learn and clean up. Keep training.

I never stopped training. This is my 11th year in Shotokan karate but my teacher moved several years ago and I have been teaching. Prob. before I should have. I was a young black belt and though I knew it all or had a solid answer anyhow. Well a few weeks ago I came across my teachers, teacher and started training under him. Mad did I have some bad habbits. Things I knew and had pointed out to others but had not caught myself. Ive trained hard for about a month now and man I feel like I have gotten so much better in that period of time than I had in the last several years. Just wanted to share that with you guys and remind you to have someone check in on you from time to time because we do develope bad habbits.

Good luck. If the 2 arts you train are differant meaning they don't have the same kata then its one thing but I tired to do some TSD in college that did the Phian froms which are just differant than our Heian forms and I could not well I did not try real hard to convert between the 2. lol.

Reasons why you became a instructor.

So I could keep training. LOL our club closed. -
How many people can you defend against.
G95champ replied to Natural's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
As many as it calls for. LOL Agreed not agreat question. LOL but I never plan on losing if attacked. The techinque I use will be the one that best presents itself at the time of need. LOL -
The worst by far are the people who want to hit you but when you hit them it hurts. When I spar I like contact. Im not talking full force but I like to know when I get hit. LOL. At the same time I like to know that I could have hit someone if I had to. No place for sissy's lol. I can't stand cry babies. Get Tuff or Get out. LOL.

We do kata a lot. When I teach Id say we work and hr at least on our kata and prob get anywhere from 12 to 20 reps on it. When I traing under my new teacher in our advanced class we do all 29 katas one time each.
