  1. welcome
  2. Nothing wrong with this I use basically the same outline when I teach self defense. Forget rules and tradition if your life is on the line you better not worry about being nice. In my women's self defense class I have actually worked with them on how to snake spit. This is where you curl your tounge and aim for the eyes. Little something I picked up in college LOL....
  3. I like Hollyfield but it seems to me he may be one of the more dirty players in the game. I know Tyson kept complaining aobut the Head Butts in both their fights. I think Lewis did as well in both of their fights. I guess its not cheatin if the ref. don't catch ya. Thats what I tell my offensive line about holding anyhow.
  4. Judo is a sport BJJ is more or less a combat art. Judo works more n throws and tosses. BJJ is a lot of joint locks and chokes. There is a huge differance in the two but Im not qualified enough to go into the exact differance.
  5. I had that same mindset for years till I actually sparred a guy who had cross trained in kickboxing and BJJ. If you don't know what to do on the ground you are in deep trouble. Espically when you run across a person that does. They can choke, crank, break, or do about anthing they want to do to you. Again I had that same mindset I felt my power could keep anyone off me long enough for me to not worry about going down. However you can't take that power shot on a BJJ person because once you do they trap the arm or leg and then its just a matter of time. I think grappeling alone is not very good but when you mix it with a great stand up art like kickboxing or even a traditional karate you run across some bad guys. If you keep a closed mind about it you will be shcoked as I was one day. _________________ (General George S. 6. Good Deal how far along is that for you?
  7. Kick Chick one and two you say LOL nevertheless welcome
  8. Change it up if you do. ex one day work upper abs next day to lower abs next day focus on the sides or love handles another day do lower back becasue if you dont work it your wasting your time. then if its a small waist you want RUN. All the ab work in the world wont take off inches. In fact it may make you a bit bigger in the long run.
  9. Thats the way any sport player is trained. Basketball you just dont shoot flat footed. You jump thus using all your body to shoot. Football needless to say to throw the ball you use more than just you arm but you shoulder, torso, hip, and leg. Track you pump the arms to move the legs. Weight Lifting you juse every major group of muscles on the big lifts. Bench, Cleans, and Squats. Karate is the same thing. To be good you learn to make all your muscles work together to do the job one has been doing for the untrained person.
  10. A guy named Bell writes a book called Complete Shotokan that I love. I use it and the G. Funakoshi books as my main text. However like the others have pointed out there are many great books out there on Shotokan.
  11. I think Frank Shamrock is the best in the game. I love to watch him he does it all, strike, grapple, lock, etc. Pluse is keeps the fighting moving. Oleg Tartariev the Russian guy who did Sambo I liked because he was gut tough. Not really a good striker but he was just a smart tough fighter. I'll take Heart any day over talent. I also like Ken Shamrock but he may be a bit past his prime. One of the guys in the older ones I really liked was Kieth Hackney who did some sort of Karate. Back when the UFC was the UFC it was NHB.
  12. Most I have ever done was 1,150lbs no counting the sled just plates for 1. That was in 1999. Our High School reccord is 1,400lbs. They guy who holds it went to WVU to play football where he did over 2,000lbs.

  14. Its as long as it is wide. Both offer completely differant things. If all things are equal I would talk to members of each class and fidn the better teacher.
  15. You can pickup moves, techinques and kata from books really well but to learn an art from a book IMO is not a realistic goal.
  16. By rooted you mean gripping the ground with your feet? If that is the case we usually start by teaching deep and as they becoem more advanced we brign in the idea of rooting the stance. However for a Shotokan school we don't stress the deep stance as much as most because its not really useful in real life defenses. However in kata we really work our low stances.
  17. Hello Bobby I train and teach Shotokan as well I am also a Nidan. Ive been in Shotokan for 10 years now.
  18. Like Doc said in Young Guns to Billy. Lets Finish the game.....
  19. Like I tell my football players and guys we are trying to talk into comming out. Lift weights it will help you in anything you do.
  20. We have done it just to mess arround but we don't practice it that way.
  21. Speed plus Techinque = Power. You dont have to be a muscle man to hit hard. You can make up for the lack of muscle by hitting quick and in the right places. Don't get me wrong I love being a big strong guy but Speed IMO is more important. BTW The problem a lot of us have is to try and build speed by taking away techinque by doing that we loose power.
  22. Glad to hear it I would like to get back into soem more BJJ. I really just scratched the surface of it.
  23. Other option would be to find another guy or 2 in your class and get together a few times a week and hit bags or spar or something like that.
  24. No I have never heard of him however that don't mean a lot. WV is 15 years behind the rest of the country remember LOL... Are you staying in the TKD class or not? How is the hamstring? Good luck with whatever you choose.
