Blade the Turtle are pretty cool but I would keep the Vanilla Ice thing on the down low. LOL. All kidding aside I liked Vanilla back in the day as well. LOL...... Ice ice baby to the extreme. LOL..... God thats sad....

I agree he has done more than his share of bad things. I too don't like him as much as I once did mainly because of the racist and sexist things he says. However he did say last night everything he said about Lewis was to promote the fight. I tend to buy that. Tyson may have gotten one over on us last night because I think he knew he could not beat Lewis but he needed the pay day so he sold the fight. I have heard him say many times he gives the people what they want to see from him. He may be right and smarter than us. LOL... I wish Customotto (spelling) had not died because he had Tyson at a leval no one could match

Traditional training techniques vs todays occupations
G95champ replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Health and Fitness
Nothing will ever replace the old ways LOL. The one thing I am seeing more and more of is training without the gi. We often train in shorts and t-shirts and a lot of people are wearing shoes now. -
The American Nija moves was what first got me into Martial Arts. Once I got into a class my sensei and other higher ranked students were all the influence I needed.

Lewis had power but no boxer IMO has ever had the power of Tyson. Lewis won because he had more techinque. Much more techinque.....

Welcome. Hope you have a good time on the boards.

Lets not get into apples and oranges here. LOL...... Im not sure where the teaching thing came in but as I read the post you were upset because you were not landing any techinques. I was saying don't worry about it. You learn by failure. If you never fail you wil have a unrealistic view of your ability. Im sorry I think the better people you spar the better you will become. However a win or 2 here helps with the confidence. -
Hmmmn?? are martial arts sports???
G95champ replied to Bobby's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Martial Arts are arts. However differant forms of Martial Arts like TKD, Judo, Sumo, Fencing, Boxing, etc are sports. Karate done in the dojo IMO is not a sport it is an art. This is a tricky question what makes a sport. I use this guideline. If there is a orginized tournament or event. You must have a winner and looser and some sort of judge, ref, or governing body to keep control and make rules. What makes a sport is a hard question NASCAR? Horse Racing? Golf? Chess? Bull Fighting? Ping Pong? Cheerleading? You be your own judge but you can make the argument both ways most of the time. -

You can only win once you learn to loose. Right now I know it is not much fun loosing but once you grow up and develope you will have an advantage on most of us. Because you are forced to always fight people older faster and stronger. Many of us fall into the trap of fighting people not as good as us a lot and it lowers our ability. Im a Football Coach (american) we always fear our guys playing to the other teams leavel. Instead of at there own. When we play bad teams we are bad to get sloppy and make the game close when it should not be. Then when we play big teams becasue we played sloppy last week we can't get it out of our system. Playing or working aginst people that are better than you makes you better. Look at Mike Tyson the last 3 fights he has had aginst quality fighters he has lost. Holleyfield twice and Lewis last night. On the ohter hand Lewis has been beating quality fighters really close. Use this as a learning expierance because it will make you better. -
Yeah the whole hard and soft idea is in the idea of the Yin and Yang or the Tiger and the Dragon. You can not have one without the other. Another way of thinking about it. Think of using soft techinques when you do not want to harm someone and hard when you do. This is a sign of a good martial artist when they can use techinques to protect themselves and cause little or no damage to the other person physically just mentallly and emotionally.

Part of our black blet test was to teach several classes before testing to show we were able to teach. After making first Dan we were asked to teach beginner classes under the supervision of our Sensei. I began teaching Classes myself one year after making my black belt. Several people approached me about private lessons. I talked it over with my sensei and he gave me his blessing. That fall I made second Dan which I still hold. If you train by the guidelines set up there should not be many high ranks out there. Shotokan like many styles puts age limits on black belts above 5th Dan. However a lot of people claim to be higher. In Shotokan if you look at the major associations you got to be 35 or 40 to be a 5th dan. Honestly not many people will put that time into it. Even if they do only a select few of us want to teach. I have met many low Dans that are more than able to teach. I have met many high color belts than are more than qualified. I have even met people who don't hold any formal rank that know a lot about the Martial Arts. However the biggest thing I have met MANY mid and so called high Dans who know nothing about their art. Rank don't mean much. I respect it and honor it because that is the right thing to do but just because the sign says 8th Dan don't mean he or she is a good martial artists much less a good teacher.

Techinque is better than power. Lewis beat Tyson by controling the distance. Tyson could not hit him. The better techinque won and thats great for Martial Arts.
-
We teach to think of hitting or blocking with the hip. To forget about the arm but think of hitting the person with your hip. Being a football coach as well I know how important hips are. The man with the lower hips will win on the football field reguardless of size. This is somewhat true in karate as well.
-
Power is speed plus techinque. I posted this idea below. To get speed we got to be relaxed. Many times we forget about techinque and try to fake speed. In other words we look faster but we loose power because we forgot about techinque. When you see these 90 year old masters they are so powerful because their techinque is thrown very fast. I have yet to see a Karate Master bench 400lbs. Now thats not to say a person who can lift 400lbs can't hit harder than a person who lifts 100lbs but imagine how hard they could hit if they used the proper techinque and had great speed.

Sparring advice...
G95champ replied to Jack's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
You say you are a TKD fighter. Im not certin on what you call it but that jump flying side kick you see in the movies all the time would move anyone back if used off the line I would think. -
His power alone would allow him to do well in a NHB event. All the ground work in the world don't help when you are seeing stars. Boxers have great foot work and to shoot and take down a boxer like Tyson would be harder than you think. However last time I checked you could not bite in the UFC. So Tyson may not do as well as you all think. LOL......

Welcome. Nice mix of arts Since you are going into the Armed Forces let me thank you now for all you will do to protect our freedom.

I posted some questions in the general MA section. That may have been your post I forgot. LOL. IF you know that much about yourself already you have done learned one of the greatest lessons Martial Arts can hope to ever teach. When we see our own faults we can fix them but most of us are blind of our actions. You will do fine.

Ken Shamrock said, "the figher makes the art the art don't make the fighter." So I guess the question is if we have twins and one does style X and one does style Y which one is the better fighter. Again it comes down to the one who can take the punch better and hit faster and harder. Styler is nothing more than a name on the school you train at.

DB are great. You can do everything with them plus they are eaiser to store. Our football team is in the process of getting rid of a lot of old equipment and adding a lot more DB's.

what should i ask?
G95champ replied to circleplus's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
First just watch class a few times. Watch the higher ranks if they look good or bad. How focused are they or are they sloppy. This is the big thing I notice first. Ask for his training history. When he started who he trained under. If he or she is the real deal these question are simply answered without looking it up. Look for honest answers to all questions. If he keeps saying in so long you will be this rank or you can beat up so many people this is not a good sign. Don't let him make promises. You want a teacher that will say here is the requirments that you must meet and time is secondary. If its a popular art like Shotokan or TKD or something go to the internet on a site like this and find out about his style ask him some history questions about his art. If he don't know the history of what he teaches then maybe you need to look elsewhere. One other thing is number of classes vs price. Hate to say it but money is at the bottom of everything you got to get the best training you can but you can't affored to have a Master from Japan come in. So ge the best bang for you buck. -
Sparring advice...
G95champ replied to Jack's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Start the fight with a spinning sweep this will put you on the gound thus you can leave the ring. Plan an attack from the ground and make your own rush. However this makes you open for attacks. I have found kickboxers are open to sweeps becasue they like to lift the leg to block. I guess if I knew what rules format you were using it would help. This is really un-sportsman idea but the first move off the line hit them hard with a kick or punch. Take the warning. This will slow them down and make them fear you. You see this idea used a lot in baseball when the pitcher will let a wild ball go on purpose to brush the batter off the plate. One idea my Sensei used to do. Is fight in a really low stance. I dont mean traditional but sort of like a squatting down to watch something. Really you are open but its a hard angle to attack. Pluse the closer the the ground you are the more stable you are. Maybe the best advice would be just to fight your fight and forget aobut the ring. If you win you win if not you did what you do best and lost to a better figther thus you still win. -
Honestly I don't care much for either fighter. I have tried to like Tyson but he is so full of hate no one could like him, he don't like himself. Lewis is the better boxer but if Tyson can land that big punch its all over. Boxing needs Tyson's star power but they don't need him. Even though Tyson is a thug he is the American and I got to cheer for him I guess. I hope to see Tyson Holleyfield III as well.

I don't fish but my dad loves it. He has a big trip planned this week. If you like fishing for trout in whitewater you need to come to WV and fish the New River.

My second Sensei Geray Kanode held black belts in TKD, Hipikido and Kung Fu. He mixed the 3 plus some training in TSD and teaches what he calles American TAO Karate. The style is build arround Hipidido however but he uses a lot of TKD moves that I caught on to from my Shotokan background. I think you can mix about anything. Hipikido is a great art one day I hope to work more in it.
