Help me with naming my Martial Arts school
G95champ replied to Withers M.A.A.'s topic in Instructors and School Owners
Academy is always a popular word in the title. Maybe you would like to think of words like Center, Club, School, or Dojo. You may also want to leave off the and just go with Withers Martial Arts. I am guessing Withers is your last name? I myself when comming up with a name first choose Justice Shotokan Karate Center. Justince being both my last name and the town I am from. However once I moved I did not like the idea of my name being the school name. So I changed it to a really broad name. West Virginia Karate Academy. I too teach a bit more than Shotokan but Karate is such a broad term to most. I found naming my school was just as hard as doing advanced techinques. You need something that can be reconized but not to hard to say or too long to write. Good luck...... -
755lbs wow I knew it was over 600 but thats ungodly. All I can say is wow. I agree with the post above about cleans being the best lift. However whne you bench with proper form you use legs, hips, and every other muscle in your body as well.

If you had two people to pound on.....

no commet so just in case it ever happens they can't use this site on me in court. LOL... -
Does anyone know where I can find some wall pics of Funakoshi and the other early founders of Shotokan. One of the men I trained with is talking about starting a school and is looking for them.

I know the max reccord at WVU for a football player is 540. They said they would not let him try anymore for one because they were uncertin they could get it off him if he did not get it. I would say the world mark is just a bit over 600.

Gi or no Gi?
G95champ replied to YODA's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
We do that blue jeans traing day as well I really like it. -
I have saw people do kata to music before and I think it looks great. I have never tried it myself but I often do bag work to music and find it keeps me going harder longer.

Gi or no Gi?

We do a small bit of grappeling in my karate class. Only because I have cross trained some. We always use the gi. My thinking is if you are attacked outside a guy will most likely have a shirt, coat, jacket or some sort of clothes on. -
Don't know. Maybe you need head gear lol. I can only do a few moves with chucks but I respect anyone who has the guts to keep trying and getting hurt while learning. Keep at it.....

Welcome

This has been used by American athlets for years. It is basically safe unless you want to take the entire bottle and not eat right. Just like Steroids however if you take it and don't lift its not going to help you. We don't encourage our guys to take anything for football becasue you never know when something will become banned however this is baiscaly harmless.

I like and hate squat kicks. Just squat down and come up and kick. Change legs each time you can thow front, side, etc. Its great I think.

If I told you then it would not be a trick.

Yeah that is good advice. No way do you even need to try a back flip alone. Im sure you can find any local cheerleader sponser to teach you how to flip if you are really wanting to.

Help me with my demo!
G95champ replied to three60roundhouse's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I saw this on ESPN once the person was going to break but insead they reach up to adjust the board and took it from their buddys hand and brok it over his head. I though this was really cool and got a big laugh. Also maybe try breaking differant things like Ice, bricks, etc.... -
Lets say Shotokan or traditonal Karate focus on use of legs and arms about the same. Akkido for avoiding and take downs BJJ for on the gound Ninjitsu for weapons

At the swimming pool but like everyone else no way am i going to try it on dry land. If I could I would do them all the time just for fun lol. We had a guy who made up a kata for tournament several years ago who turend some in it. He finished 2nd BTW. They are nice but useless.

Who here owns their own school?
G95champ replied to Withers M.A.A.'s topic in Instructors and School Owners
If you can afford to only take students of your picking I say do it. I have had way to many guys come and go and not care anything about the art but about the strong attacks. In each case I told them to leave as soon as I became aware of their actions. However you are faced with the question of money vs. morals. Also holds true for young kids. YOu can make tons of money on small kids but do you really teach them anyting. Next thing is to be careful who you give black belts to. You will want to give them but you want people that you can trust and represent you and the club well. This also holds true for those you allow to teach other classes. Sort of like the person posted above don't let money mess up the love. Best of luck to you. -
Again my students have a time learing knife hand blocks. Mostly tucking the thumb I bet I fix that a dozen times each class. I agree about the balance moves like the crane stances. I find little kids have trouble with stances. I usually just keep them in a front and don't really worry about changing them.

Shoulders Front Raises Side Raises Shoulder press set or stand down block and outside block combo Arms Curls Tricep Ext many others Chest Do pushups on the DB Legs Squat Lunge Straight Leg Deadlift Calves You can do anything if not more with DB IMO.....

I know my joints hurt more now than they did 4 years ago when I was 20. So I guess you guys over 40 are in the same boat just much futher out to sea. LOL. I would sugest doing light weight and high reps if you lift. Don't strain the joints by going heavy. I would also stick to walking over running again just the impact on the knees. As far as time goes to each his own.

Bench, Clean, Dead Lift, Squat..how much??
G95champ replied to Phantasmatic's topic in Health and Fitness
Guys I am guessing you all are in your mid teens thus 300 seems like a lot. Let me tell you that no Im not that strong. We had guys on my HS football team that benched over 400 lbs. and a few over 500. Us guys in West Virginia are big boys lots of beans and cornbread. LOL. My High Schools Weightroom Reccord look like this. Bench Brock Mounts 520lbs Squat Brock Mounts 630lbs Leg Press Greg Robinette 1500lbs Clean Bret Browning 300lbs We have had great football teams in the past and our work in the wightroom is the reason why. My brother is a FR playing football for WVU now and he benches 340 and that is weak for the team. Most Sr. at a D1 college bench high 400's. Thanks for making me feel good. LOL.... -
Bench, Clean, Dead Lift, Squat..how much??
G95champ replied to Phantasmatic's topic in Health and Fitness
If you can get 200lbs by the age of 15 thats really good. In HS I never got over 250lbs. I just never worked on my bench any. Spent time cleaning and squating. I went up over 300 last spring. I do not lift hard anymore I left enough to maintain. Im 24 by the way. I am the asst. HS football coach and I run the weight training program at our school. So I spend more time watching the guys lift and spotting I hit a set or 2 when I can but I have not lifted to get big or anything like that since the late 90's.
