  1. I disagree. My brother plays football at WVU. I have been to and seen a lot of D1 and other college weight training programs. Although you may be right that heavy weight may work it faster the fact is light weight done with corrrect form will do the job just as good if not better. The best Bench workout for mass and muscle is 5 sets of 5. You can not do that with you max. You have to do it with a lighter weight you can control. I don't mean if you bench 400 lbs to do 100. More like 250 instead of trying to hit 390 everday. Do a safe weight with perfect form and you will grow and develope much faster than heavy weight.
  2. I know all about the pain in you leg and butt your talking about that is the worst feeling. If you got a knot i would go to a DR. You may have pulled the muscle loose from the back of the knee or something. Better let a DR or Physical Therpist check it out ASAP. Honestly if you can get to a local college and let like the football or basketball trainer check it out you may learn more at less a cost.
  3. Back in the fall before football season I hit 330 I am down to about 315 now. I stoped lifting for a few months durring season and never got back to about the first of march. Its not weight its techinque. The wight you put ont he bar don't mean a thing uness you do it with good form and breath right.
  4. There are differant methods of coaching. 1. you can praise a kid all the time hoping that positive words breeds good works. This is the best situation for the student but if you are never told you are doing somehting bad you are setting yourself up for a let down. 2. Focus on the slower kids and allow the other to learn. I find myslef doing this a lot becasue there are some kids I know have already picked the move up. SO i work with others more often. Thus I find the only time I really speak to the other guys is to correct a minor flaw. 3. Focus on the good studnets and forget the poor ones. Done more in sports because you got to play you best kids on game day. 4. You can always chew a person out. This makes the student feel bad however once he gets it right he is praised and that makes the work seem worth it. There are many others methonds but these are a few. Unless he flat out tells you that you suck I would not worry about it. However some people need more support than others. As long as you feel that you are doing your best then don't worry about what others think or say.
  5. Thanks I have never been into that form until here in a few seconds. Sorry for double posting.
  6. The key to straight leg deadlift is to do light weight. No more than say 135lbs. Stand on a box so you can go lower than you feet. Let the weight hang for like 2 seconds on each lift so you get a great stretch. I have my football players use Dumbells when doing them. They key to any weight training is to go light and use perfect techinque. The ONLY time you get hurt is when you are showing off doing more than you can or need to be doing do. Light weight build you just as good as heavy weight and you don't get hurt in the process.
  7. Is Frank Dukes still living or is he teaching? That is who bloodsport was made after. Why do we not hear anything about him?
  8. This is a question I have faced a lot in the short time I have been teaching. I will take kids above 5 but only for 30mn classes. I tend to do nothing with them but basic moves and let them beat on me (spar with me). I try to work on motor skills and balance with them. I really don't think most kids should start to they are in their early teens. However there are exceptions to the rule. I got one kid who really caught on and picked up the kata and everything. Still I am very selective of the young kids I take. What is you feelings on kid black belts? I personally will not have a black belt under me who is not at least 16. BTW I do not test kids differant than adults. I know some will dumb down the tests but I don't. That may be wrong but again I think rank should mean something. 9. Welcome and have a great time. This is a great site with lots of people who know a lot about the Arts.
  10. I just realized your rank and style ws listed under your name I guess I could have looked a bit I guess. LOL. I would say TKD will be a bit harder for you to get back in the swing of things because all of the kicking.
  11. Yeah side kicks focus on the hip flexor not the hamrstring. I really don't recall if they hurt me or not lol. I would also think a spinning back kick should be safe because that is not a hamstring kick. When this time passes for you Im sure you will be a better Martial Artist because you will have had the chance to look at it from a differant prospective. What style do you do?
  12. Anytime a martial artists lifts they must keep in mind the hamstrings. You must do leg curls and straight leg dead liff. That way you keep flexibility.
  13. Good luck I think that is the coolest stuff to watch.
  14. Yeah when I first started back I had that same feeling like I was going to hurt it again. I used to be able to set in a full split I don't even try now In fact I rarely kick higher than the waste now with anything but a front snap kick. Before I got hurt I could do a lot of combo, jump, and spin kicks for a big guy. However after the hamstring I have became a much better Martial Artist becasue I realized its nto about that. I really developed my hand speed in that time. I also focused on some weapons like sword and bo. You may feel it is better in a few weeks but be careful becaue you will just pull it again. Slowly work with it and don't try anything that may strain it for at least a year. Like AX kick breaks. Make sure it is good or you may be out a long time.
  15. Go to any local bar and talk to JACK DANIELS and his WISE BUD. They will introduce you to the MILLER who runs a DRAFT. Once you have been drafted you will have to take SHOTS to kill any infection. After you shots watch out for the SHOOTERS because they may ask you for SEX ON THE BEACH. Finally after everything is done you will mean a guy named JIM BEAN who will teach you the art of WILD TURKEY. Since you are in Misouri you may be sent home to the SOUTHREN CONFORT dojo. As you can tell I really don't know but I though this may get a LOL..... Sorry Patrick....
  16. Well like I said Rickson has stated he is not the best Gracie refering Helio or Carlos Jr. I listed Rickson becasue he has done it so long and he was really the most public of the family. However I agree that some of the other may be better fighters.
  17. Hello hope to read a lot of your posts.
  18. Being a teacher myself I say welcome and hope to read a lot of your posts.
  19. Yeah this is how mine was. I had a bruse from my butt to the back of my knee. I probably should have went to the Dr. but Im to hard headed. I found myslef not resting good either because like you said you can't lay or set on it to long. Its a dull pain like you said until you move and jerk it. Be careful I tore mine in Oct of 97. Arround March of 98 I begin full training again. I still had some pain and much less flexability. However it was not really better because the next August I was running sprints with my football team and pulled it again. This was not as bad it only hurt a few weeks but they take a long long time to fix. Almost any professional athlete you talk to say they would reather break a bone than pull and hamrstring because they take so long to fix. Good luck I really hurt for you because I was there.
  20. I hope you are playing dumb. Those are five of the greatest fighters in the world. I know none of them. They fight because that is their job. I am just trying to put up a nice topic for debate.
  21. I know this is made hard by the fact that boxers are boxers and point fighters are point fighters and NHB is NHB. But lets say everything is open. Meaning if a grappler had to box a boxer five times and a boxer hod to grapple five times who would win the most often. In other words say they had to fight in their own fourm and in the other perosons. 1. Frank Shamrock - This kid is IMO the best by far. His only weakness is that he is small. I think Ken could beat him but pound for pound he is the best. Frabj us a great striker, grappler, and he has the most energy I have seen in a NHB fighter. He never stops working. If he can not beat you in round one he will in round 100.... 2. Ricksen Gracie - No one did it better or longer than him. However he will tell you he is not the best Gracie but he is the fist people talk about. 3. Chuck Norris - I have not seen many of his old fights but in point sparring they say none were better. I think he could do more than ok on the ground as well. 4. Roy Jones Jr. - People say he is the greatest pound for pound boxer. I am pretty sure he would get killed on the ground but when he is in shape no one is better whith his hands. Ali included...... 5. Ken Shamrock - As far as talent I don't think he is as good as the 4 above. Nor may he be as good as the next 20. However he is maybe the toughest and smartest fighter out there. Ken would do well in everything but say a open TKD tourey. That don't mean he can't kick I just have never seen him do much of it. These are just some of my favorites. I know they are many many more. SOme I know and some I don't. So lets see what you guys think.
  22. Back to the wall. This is really a huge help... Keep everyone in front of you. Attack the most agressive or leader first with an attack such as a running punch with shifitng comb or low round kick to the knee and try and take him out. At the same time as you tag him try and break their line and excape. If you are on some surface beside blacktop. Grab to hands full of dirt, rocks, sand, etc. Throw one then run. Throw the other pick up 2 more and run. This will give you a cover to make an excape. However if you mush fight. I say take the first guy out. Find the leader or biggest guy they got and break his knee, kick him in the groin, poke his eyes out, bite, etc. Lots of times when the main man falls the rest loose nerve.
  23. OMG I feel so bad for you. I tore min in 97 dong a split. Sounded like a gun going off. I was out more than 6 months. However this is the time I made my biggest gains. I read everything I could get my hands on. I watched UFC's and other karate tournaments and learned from them. I watched fights over and over and over just to try and pick up things. Being a football player at the time I knew how to watch film. LOL.... I studied kata mentally. I would go to class and watch. I noticed what people did wrong and how other teachers approached the problem. As far as actuall training I did a lot of staning self-defense. As far as rehab I hope you are not as bad as I was. Do leg curls as much as you can. Say like 4 sets of 12 each day. Buy some icy hot or something and keep on it. Stretch as much as possible but it hurts. Do straight leg deadlift as well. However the biggest thing is rest. Dont do anything that will cause you to jerk it again. Rest is the best medicine the body has a way of fixing itself if left alone.
