I love the low hook as a sweep. -
No one still throws a punch like Tyson. Thus if he lands no matter how bad off mentally or physically he is he can win. I do think Lewis is the best fighter but the best don't always win. If Tyson were to get his head on right and get away from people like Don King. He could be the best again for the next 5-8 years. IMO....

Does TSD do the Pidan kata. My American TAO teacher mixed TSD, TKD, Hapikido and some Kung Fu to form American TAO.

What part of Va are you from? Welcome

Yeah kids with black belts is what gives karate a bad name. I know several people in my area from another school who claim to be black belts but have not trained over a year. Like I said I will never test a kid for black belt under the age of 16. I baiscally do one year testing periods with my kids. Because I think that is about the same as 3-4 months for adults.

Well that is the great thing about America our background is everyone else. We are not isolated to just one group but all groups came together to form us.

Competion is just that competion. If you want to win. WIN. I don't coach my football players to just go out and have fun. I coach them to win. Now I don't say go out there and grab the QB's arm and break it on the first play. However the purpose of competion is to see who is better not just physically but mentally. Lots of times one can act agressive and completely destroy the other guy because he is affraid. Sounds like a good plan to me.

The Tekki kata if you lay on your back. Some teach it as the guard postion. I do. However their is not ground stuff taught at face value in Shotokan. There are a lot of moves in a lot of the kata that can be intrupted as ground moves. Which they may be. I like to think they are. Gives my art more credit. LOL....

We have broken both at the same time and the plastic boards are harder it seems. Real wood breaks quit eaisy I think espically if its only one board. The plastic boards we got are only a inch thick but they are much harder than a inch thick pine board.....
-
Our school does not do much breaking. We bring in some boards ever now and then as a reward to the class for working hard or something special. However we do not require it by any means. When we break real boards we break the 1 inch pine bords. We also got a several of those tan rebreakable boards like Century sells. I was wondering what is the relation in that plastic board and a 1 inch pine board. I am thinking the plastic board is about the same as 2.5 wood boards. Is that a good guess?

Im a firm believer that the best way to defend from a weapon it to master the weapon. Thus I think Shotokan Karate could use a little weapons that you could see on the street like a Bo or Jo and anchient weapons like a Ore and Hoe. No one will attack you with a Sai ro Sword I would not think. Also like to see some more grappeling. To fix those 2 concerns myself I have cross trained after making my black belt. I now add bits of my cross training inot my Shotokan class but not as required learining.

As most agree your attack on the boy does not make anything right. Now the guy was wrong to hit your friend but at the same time your friend hit him first. Im sorry He should not have punched her but I get sick and tired of all this equal rights stuff women shout. She hit first he finished it. Thats where the rubber meets the road. If a boy hit him and he hit back he would be the hero. Never should a guy hit a girl but I teach when your hit or swung at strike back. You may argue he pushed her first but she should have walked away. I sugest she break up with him and stay away forever. Because if they are hitting each other now they will later on in life. Might don't make right.

I have done a bit of Hapkido however I think I physically would fit in better with it. However the kid in me says Be a Nija....

Would somehting like fencing or even archery be a form of Martial Arts. Considering both are weapons practice in the East. Beinig a history teacher I would think the beiggest reason the west does not have what we consider Martial Arts is becasue it developed faster. Meaning they cam up with things like construction, navigation, guns (not gun power), printting press, and other tools of development. Thus more was put on learing science and not on a art. Also the West was united and much longer. Rome brought togeter a lot of defferant people (Saxons aka English, Gaul aka France, the Hun aka Germany, all the mid-east and north africia. In other words they did not have to do all the resarch and they developed faster. China was just as large as Rome but it did not defeat or come in contact with anyone of differant backgrounds until Ginguas Khan in the 12th centruy.

Well one could argue that anything is deadly. However as far as teaching certin techinques I think you must wait until you can trust a students. This usually is not possilbe below black belt leval. Never teach it to beginers or people who are not under control.

I think we both are talking about the same thing but the term light weight threw us off on what the other was rfering to. EX Lets say I bench 315. I get a better workout doing sets of 225 for 5-10 reps than I do by doing 280 for 1. If I benched 315 and did 135 for reps of 5-10 then no way will it work. I was referign to light eight as weight you coudl control and do correctly. People get hurt lifting when they try and do more than they are ready for or are using poor techinque.
-
Yeah belt don't much matter in the long run. I always stress to my kids its better to be a really good low rank than an ok high rank.
-
Test wise I was lucky. I tore mine 10 days after making Nidan in Shotokan.
-
Try cleans thats a total body lift.

Should you practise more than one martial art
G95champ replied to Lau gar's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would make sure I got my black belt in one art first. That way you have some sort of closure to that training. I met a lot of people while in college who held several differant gold, orange blue, green belts. They were exposed to everything form TKD to Wrestling. However none of them were really that good of a martial artist. Some were great fighters but not Martial Artists. Once you get a black belt in a base style expand all you want. However you have to have something to call home.
