Wing Tsun vs...
Adonis replied to dippedappe's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
just becuase the style is hard hitting doesn't mean its brute force. Boxing seems hard to alot of people but actually very skilled to me. Very good foot work, head and body movement, uses a few techniques in combination and stragey to pull off outstanding results. I seen vid's on the net boxers tooling wing chun and vice versa but most of the time in favor of the boxers. I am not saying wing chun don't work. THinking that soft always beats hard is plain silly though. -
like subgrappler said there are few exceptions like chuck liddel and vandereli silva. who are good on take down defense as well as decent in the clinch. So they can utilize strikes more effectively. Then again alot has to do with agression as well, or assertivness as well. example any one watch a couple episodes of TUF I will use this as an example since its on tv cause it can be used as more evidence since evidence then some of the stories my buddy did this or I saw that. As some people like to use. When Jorge Gurgel faught jason von flute. Jorge had more training supposedly. He was better on the ground (bjj black belt) as well as a few years of muay thai training. Yet Jason beat him by landing more strikes. So it does come down to the fighter. The heart, the drive, and fighters emontial level and state of mind.

lol so your in armed forces h2whoa? -
IF you don't do the ground then you don't know how to defend against a grappler if your put there. Plus if the other is a better striker. Probably better option if you do go to the ground if you can't run away first. Also If its pure striker against pure grappler more of my money is on the grappler. Just my opinion. Now if they both have experience in take down defense. Were chuck liddel is a grappler also that prefers to strike. He is a D1 wrestler with 8 years of doing BJJ his ground skills are sick! Any one if both are versed in striking and grappling then obvisouly its to the better fighter with the better game plan, and physical conditioning. Heck even on the latest TUF when Joe stevenson faught the boxer. His stand up was better then joes but he couldn't stop the take down. Joe took him down and elbowed him bad until he tapped. Either way I don't discredit striking. You should be well versed in both grappling and striking. Just my opinion is unless you get the knock out right off the bat or are good on take down defense the edge goes to the grappler. If you get taken down and are on your back the grappler has the edge cause the strikes don't come much into play accept for eyes gouges and throat strikes but y our just as much open for those type of moves if not more so. If the grappler is in the more dominant postion. Either way this is still what "IF"ing you need to know both. You can say you don't want to do ground or much if at all of it because his buddies but there times where you got your buddies or just you and another guy either way. IF the person is better striker your going to bet beat better you take them to the ground. Also grappling is becoming more popular by the day. the thugs do martial arts also. Weather be boxing or grappling or both. the notion that thugs don't have perserverence to gain any skill from martial arts is silly. People learn to protect them selves and they will seek out the training for it rather the good or the bad guy. Even some one who has done some wrestling there are those that take that stratgey if in a fight of slamming some one and beating them on the ground with out having formal martial arts training. So I rather be prepared.

LOL! Ninja Please! There is a point things can go sour. But if your both mature enough adults about it. You will be alright! Go ahead and go for it. Be better you went and it didn't work out. Then you always wonder what "if" out of things people regret most people regret what they "should, could,or would" have done. Don't let that be you! -
Self Defense Techniques anyone?
Adonis replied to younwhagrl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Practice is the key. I agree with both IGM and Angela. Focusing on principles is good but those princples have to be placed into physical pratice with enough repition to make them effective. There for they go into techniques. with out repition of moves. You won't able to apply the principles which in tern a principle that isn't applied is just a theory. So what principles angela are you refering to? Give more examples to your disscustion. -

thats something for you to decide. Can you handle still going to the same school and being around her if the relationship goes sour? Not to mention some people keep things discreet others. Like to broadcast to any one who will listen their relationship woes. So could be a chance every one at the school here's your business. Hopefully none of that happens to you. On the flip side. It can go well. Share something in common, which strengthens bond of a relationship. Do what you feel is right. -

That is old news Bas been calling Rickson out live on prideFC when he was announcing for them. This was back in the first 10 prides were out. Alot of people chalange rickson. Rickson doesn't have really great stand up striking. I dont' think he would hang with bas. Ricksons best bet is when he has some one already on the ground. Take top fighters who have good stand up and good take down defrense, like chuck liddel and many other fighters. I dont' think rickson can hang with on there feet and if he can't get them to the ground he is going to be in trouble. I think rickson fight days are gone. Not because he still cant' fight even though he is really up there in age. Just technically he isn't as profienct as now days fighters. His ground skills are obviously second to none but getting some one to the ground or his striking ability can be definelty braught into question. Just my opinion -

scarf hold escapes.
Adonis replied to Adonis's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
thanks andrew, Yeah mostly I can get out of it. They guy was a good wrestler with some Jiu-Jitsu knowlege. He got me in the basic arm lock where he controls the arm and puts it in his legs to get the arm lock I kept twisting my arm a little bit so He won't get the pressure and on the elbow joint. I was able to free the arm up but still had a hard time to escape. Yeah your right I forgot about that. I should work it more for combination of moves to get out of it. Thats how I work my mount combine my upa with knee/elbow or other escapes to get out of mount. Or roll the person over. Thanks for the tips. who you train with by the way? -
I need help on this one. I only know 2 or 3 techniques but can't seem to pull them off on any one who is good. 1. I know the one where you get your hips close to there's and roll them over. My opponent keeps moving away from my hips and following me towards my head so I can't get my hips close enough to them to roll them over. 2. clasping my arm and pushing on there head to push them back to use my legs to hook on them to take them over, but they change postion to mount or North/south when I do this and push on the arm so I loose my leverage and postioning for that technique. 3. Last one is if the opponent leaves space with his far arm that is either under hooking ont he shoulder or there arm is under my neck. If they leave space I can slip out and take the back but if some one is playing tight I fill I loose my nechniques and I have to wait till they move to diffrent postion to escape. Any one know diffrent escapes from Scarf hold position that I can use instead of these. That are some high percentage moves?

I remember doing Shaolin Kempo with my old instructor. So I was doing forms and my crotch on my gi ripped. That was embarrasing. Also recently I went to a taekwondo school and ended up ripping my pants sparring. That was embarrasing also.

Some of the best stories I heard was on a diffrent web site. Any one know of Chris Brennan. He has some good stories to tell.

make the same straight fist you have problems with and place it against a wall or unmoveable object then push on the object. Get it to where only your index and middle knuckles are the ones that are pushing or touching the wall. Make sure the back of your hand is in alighnment with your forarm on one plane. Could be your hitting the target in a bad angle your, your forarm and wrist aren't alighned (having a lose or limp wrist) also maybe your not curling your fingers in enough.

Forumlate a theory, take theory, and test it, evaluate the results, and reforumulate a course of action, and re-test the COA (course of action) and repeat process or re-testing diffrent forumlative COA's until desired results have occured. Saying what you can do and then doing it are two diffrent things. I say just enjoy your training, but if people want to say they can do this or that. Then prove it with as many people as you can, from diffrent styles, and who are good at what they do and prove it to your self.

I like mount but I see more submission options in side control of course thats with the gi. Plus quicker transitions between knee on stomach, scarf hold, and north south can be accomplished from side mount or side control. Either way for your mount work on using your hooks, applying your waight and careful on how you do your weight distribution. Head control, and the triangle (3 points of contact theory) to help with your base.

Its just a defintion that is open to interpretation. Besides the dictionary defination. Every one seems to have there own idea as to what a martial artist is to them. Thats fine doesn't mean they are or right or wrong or a peson with a diffrent opinion is right or wrong.
