How good do YOU think you are?
karatekid1975 replied to baronbvp's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Long story. She's not my original instructor in TKD. The original one I had a falling out with. But she has two charter dojangs under his org. I train with her, but I would have to test under him for BB ... won't happen .... But she is such an awsome instructor, I train with her anyway. -
how long have you studied?
karatekid1975 replied to boyo1991's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've been training a little over 6 years. 5 in TKD, 1 year and 3 months in TSD (my first art). Plus I dabbled in other arts for fun. -
Hey Kez. Good advice so far from everyone. But believe it or not, the only test I was NOT nervous on was my second go with my 1st gup (kyu) test. Because I trained HARD for that test. The first time I failed (first time I EVER failed a belt test), but that kicked me in the butt to train and get it right. I knew my stuff the second time around (the first time I didn't). So if you are training hard and know your stuff, who cares about the others. Do it for you.

Most effective/amusing instructional metaphors
karatekid1975 replied to gzk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
OMG!! My instructor used a new one for me tonight and it worked! "Regular" to "Goofy." We are both snowboarders and I couldn't get this one drill (sparring drill). Then she said "regular to goofy" and I picked it up! Nice It has to do with which way you go down the the slope on the snowboard .. right (goofy) or left (regular) foot forward. -

I have to remember these! I'm scared now LOL. Like the monkey stance ... (sorry guys ... inside joke). -
Wait! That's one of them I liked, also. Thanks baronbvp. I didn't have to look for it.

I don't think I'm all that (except in kata, forms kinda). But someone I look up to so much .... my instructor ... said I should have tested for my BB. I don't think I'm ready, but she thinks I was at the time. That humbled me for some reason (she said this just the other night and I haven't trained regularly for a while). -
I like Heidi's: Student of the arts. Mine has to do with snowboarding. "Goofy" is my stance on the snowboard (skaters would also understand). Plus I am goofy at times LOL. I like a few others, but I have to go look for them. I don't remember them off hand.

Hey. That is a name I haven't seen in a while. Welcome back

I forgot to mention that I love to garden, too. Which is helpful since I'm vegetarian (almost vegan). And I love the beach in the summer. Sunbathing, and anything about water I love. I am a fish to water. I may try wakeboarding this year since I got better at snowboarding (almost the same). Ready Heidi? I won't chicken out this time. If I do, kick my backside LOL.

Me too! Just because I love snowboarding doesn't mean I like the winter. I mean, I made it sound like I did in my previous posts. But I don't. This time a year, the summer person in me starts crying out for warm weather. I'm ready for the beach.

I've seen both, also. But for me, MA helped me for the better. I am more calm about things, I have better self esteem, ect. I used to have a temper, but I don't anymore.

Yes, I agree. Good thread! For me, I think I am pretty decent at forms/kata. I believe I have decent technique. And my proudest moment for that was when I got 2nd place in a tourny against BB's (I was a 2nd gup at the time)! But there's others out there that are a LOT better than me. But I lack in sparring. And breaking. I really want to improve in these areas. Eventhough at my last test for 1st gup, I nailed all my breaks (5 stations, two boards each). But the problem is, there's hardly anyone at my age in tournies that like to break (women over 30). So, I place just because I "show up." Boy, do I hate that ... gggrrr. As far as sparring, I can hold my own, but I'd like to do more combos, improve my foot work, and my speed. -
I was just wondering what other hobbies that KF members have other than MA. Me? I love snowboarding (thanks to Heidi). I love to cook. And I love music. I play drums, and listen to all types of rock. I did play drums for a good 2 hours last night and had a blast.

I just got the iPod shuffle. The only thing I use it for is snowboarding. It holds 250 songs. I have about 20 on it right now. If I fall in the snow, it's small enough that it won't "stab" me, or get crushed. So it does the job for me.

I do TKD, but I started out in TSD in NJ. I always go back to my TSD dojang to train (when visiting family in NJ). I don't think that's "dojo hopping" since I trained there before. But, then again, I don't travel much. When I go to PA to visit my hubby's family, I don't bother. Weird.

We are getting snow now. We got a inch or two. Yesterday we had a bit more. I was going to snowboard today, but it started to rain. Then turned back into snow after I decided not to. Go figure. It's supposed to get warm here by the end of the week ... bad for snowboarding (season is almost over ... about 4 weeks left IF it stays cold) So I'm headed to the real slope on Thursday. And Maybe saturday, too. I want to get ALOT of riding in before it ends.

Nice new avatar! Thanks. It's not me in the pic, but it is like me to do toe side (sorry ... snowboard talk) like in the pic. Plus I had the same avatar for 5 years. I needed to change it.
-
Thanks. But I'm not old! LOL. My body feels it, though. But I'm NOT giving up!!! I did snowboard yesterday on the bad knee. But it was on powder (soft snow). Much better on the knee. Falling was a lot more forgiving, too.
-
We still have plenty of snow here. At least my "backyard slope" does. I was having fun on it yesterday (sledding and snowboarding). baronbvp, when you guys got that ice storm, we just got snow (a LOT of it) up here. I feel bad for you guys.

Wow! Great thread. I just read the whole thing LOL. Anyways, I'm only 32, but I've had my fair share of injuries. It's starting to catch up to me, too. I've hurt both knees (left one was/is worse), ankle, my back, and left hip. None of which happened in MA, excpet the right knee, and back. I know it's catching up with me, because I can't do certain things in MA that I used to (jump kicks, my kicks are getting lower, ect). Plus I REALLY notice my left knee is getting worse on wednsday when I kinda over did it snowboarding and my knee started to hurt that night. What I mean by "over did it" is I don't usually stay on the mountain for more than 3 hours. I was there for 4 and a half hours. Not much longer, but enough to pound my knee (I just don't see how some people can do it for 8 hours on top of an injury .... Heidi ). Plus I'm still a rookie (at snowboarding, that is). Which means stressing my knees to stay on the board instead of my butt LOL. But I love it. I got that feeling when you first start MA, and you get addicted. I got the same for snowboarding. And I don't want to quit either MA or snowboarding. So my idea (like others have said), I modified some stuff. I don't do jump kicks (or very rarely anymore). I don't push myself too hard if I'm hurting, ect. And I don't plan on being a super star in snowboarding either. I just want to "free ride" (which means just crusing down the mountain and not doing tricks and such that often ... better for the knee).

The snow at my house was melting yesterday That's ok, though. I was on the mountain in beautiful conditions. It was sunny, 40 degrees, the snow was perfect, and no wind (except at the top of the lift ... bbrrr). I stayed until it got dark (cold). I had a blast.
-
LOL. I want it to keep snowing! My "backyard" slope is almost perfect now! When it snows, I go down a few hundred times on a boogie board type sled to pack it down. Then I go down a few hundred times with my snowboard. Then I go inside, warm up next to the woodburner, and drink a beer or two. Ahhh!!! Fun day.

Same here. We have five schools (soon to be 6). My instructor runs two of them (both part time). She is a great technician and excellent instructor. So, being part of a chain, it doesn't effect how she teaches. One other of our schools, however, needs a little "help." I also have a feeling that the 6th one won't last long. But it may. Who knows.

Falling isn't bad to me either. Go for it (just ask my instructor hehehehehe ... she does both KMA and snowboarding).
