  2. No I am in ****o Ryu and it is open to all Karate BC Styles. I got back and won bronze! The main thing that scared me was the fact that I was the smallest there. I weigh 200 lbs. and I am 5'10". Freaked me out!
  3. Rotating the hip does help in self defence and Kumite. When you rotate after a punch and you retract back, it makes it easier for a front leg kick!
  4. Hey all, just letting you know that I will be leaving for the BC Winter Games in a few hours. It is gonna be a blast. I'm competing in Kumite in the 16-17 year old +60kg catagory. IM GONNA WIN GOLD!
  5. As for the ones called temple, they may have been learnt at a temple or something like that. It could mean that the man's dogs name was temple. The fact is that we don't know. I feel that it should be a sign of respect to keep the names. You may have your own view of the kata, but in my opinion, they should be kept out of respect.
  6. It is alright to be nervous. It feels better after you combat that fear and submit it and then you get new confidence in yourself.
  7. I would have to say the people who have inspired me are my Sensei and Sempai, Ron Bagley and Michelle Pierce who have always encouraged me. My fellow practitioners who have always taught me something. My family for being so supportive. My idol is actually Mahatma Ghandi. He defeated 250 years of occupation with non-violence and passive resistance. That is my idol.
  8. I think kata names reflect what the original person thought they were doing and what they were fighting. It is a sign of respect to keep them the way they are.
  9. Same with Shi-to Ryu, in my biased opinion
  10. A great man or woman who can face adversity and hardship, and still forgive those who have wronged them.
  11. I do not seek the approval of others because others taint their opinions to make you feel better. The true critic is yourself, because yourself never lies to you, and it always tells you you can do better.
  12. Look up the Sikh faith, which is what i believe in. I am a saint-soldier. There is no reason why not to be both. Religion can help you on the battlefield. It may help prepare you for death and that helps you fight to your very best. Except Death but cherish and fight for Life.
  13. The point of nukite is being like a knife. If it went with enough force, hell yes it would knock them down, the wind is knocked out of them. And if you wanna do more damage, then just add a kick or something. I believe that you are refering to the Nukite in Kushanku Dai, well, Bunkai doesn't always have to follow kata, just resemble it.
  14. Technique has no life; you put the life into it.
  15. I agree with Tobias, the nukite is usually done in the solar plexus.
  16. who says arts can't involve physical activity. I consider it an art, which has the physical side to it.
  17. The best person to teach is someone who didn't believe in a thing you said, and then changed his opinion because of what you taught them. That is my ideal student.
  18. Death is irrelevant, it is life and how we live it, that matters in the end.
  19. An instructor is someone who should be focused on not only building a better martial artist, or athlete or whatever, but on building a better person
  20. Its not the martial art, its the martial artist.
  21. There is a CD of Goju Ryu ****ei Kata. Look on http://www.kamikaze.com and look for the CD's
  22. I ususlly change my guard to suit my opponent. I have seen most of them fight before so I know what to exepect. Since I have long arms, I generally have a high guard which protects my face and my body.
