  1. You don't have to go to the gym to work out. Cardio at your age is also very important, it will help you out at your Martial Arts. I am assuming you are in one, correct? Anyway, just look at some other stuff. At this stage you have begun to grow, so therefore the muscles will expand greatly, but will not be as effective if you grow and exceed the muscle strength. Just take it easy, and go with your Mother.
  2. Not really, these are the new rules. I haven't heard anything about any other new rules. These rules are the Sanbon, Nihon, and Ippon ones. If these aren't the ones on the site, let me know, I have another link.
  3. The New Shi-tei Kata for the WKF is what is going to be mandatory. For personal katas, Seinchin, Bassai-dai, and Matsumaraha Rohai. I am in Shi-to Ryu, we have over sixty katas.
  4. So, Tiger Balm is up again. I live in North Van so I know about Tiger Balm. Have fun!
  5. People from my team, state your name. I personally vote for Dragon!
  6. Cool!
  7. Street Fighter II. All the way!
  8. I have a school where it is very sport oriented. However, my Sensei says that you cannot be good at Kumite unless you do Kata. Kata gives you the balance necessary to be able to move fast and stay on your feet. A lot of people lack that. My dojo still maintains etiquette and our traditions, and we come first in all our comps whether it be Kata or Kumite. It is not hard to mix both and when you do, you get great results.
  9. Its amazing how many people think they have mastered an art and go out and leave martial arts behind. They think they have learnt all they can from their instructor. I look at these people and just wonder how they can throw away everything they have worked for and not give anything back to the dojo, the Sensei, or any of the other students. Its amazing. Thankfully, this is not the majority of Martial Artists. Let's hope it never does.
  10. A belt is something to hold up your pants, nothing more!
  11. Think that Canadians are just lumberjacks and curlers Wonder if Canadians have running water up there Don't know who Da Vinci, Montesquie, and Robespierre are...but are certain they were American!
  12. Different styles have different names. Hiji-ate means elbow. Chudan is middle, Age is rising, Jodan is upper, Ushiro is reverse, No idea what oroshi is. Uraken is like uchi, but it is more like a thrust then a snap back. All the other names are either directions or ways to do it. I am sure the others will help you out on this one.
  13. I am glad that you enjoyed yourself. I hope you came back with some new knowledge.
  14. Hip hop and Rap, damn right!
  15. I started out as someone who hated kata, just fighting, whether it be street or competition. I put all my effort into my fighting ability and just passing kata. My fights were less then impressive. On the street, because of my bulk I had an advantage. In competition, I would lose. I asked my Sensei why. He said, just keep practicing your kata. I finally had the intelligence to ask him "why?" He made us do an entire week of kata, and I finally understood. He then asked me, "why?" Kata helps develop power, speed, and balance. It doesn't matter whether the techniques work or not, it matters what happens to your body. You learn hip rotation, use of the abdomen, balance, things that I am sure everyone will agree are necessary for combat. That is what is important, not the gyaku tsuki or the yoko-geri, although they work for me, I find the stuff underneath the skin is what was trained the most.
  16. I do Shi-to Ryu Seikokai Karate do and I am first kyu, brown belt! My sensei is Ron Bagley and my head Sempai is Michelle Pierce.
  17. Competitions are awesome. The amount of people there is amazing, and from many different styles. The food is great, the women are awesome, and there is media coverage. Of course that is in my HUMBLE opinion. Have fun.
  18. I know the Shi-to Ryu version, Kushanku dai. There we do a scissor kick and then we finish the kata.
  19. Seianchin and Rohai. I like Bassai Dai as well, but the first two are my favourite. As well as Seipai!
  20. I do lean back a little, but that is because of my physiology. I try to remain up right so that I can recover quickly and attack again if I have to.
  21. Why is it that people have been sworn to look at skill with rank? A white belt may be better than any black belt you have ever met!
  22. Buddhism is not shoved down the hole. We are giving reference to where it came from, but you don't have to believe it. As for bowing, you may not believe in bowing and all that, but someone else may, and to be a little respectful, you should maybe bow to them. People who come to the United States may shake your hand, but people in Japan bow as well. It is pure respect.
  23. We also signed a contract, but we have been taught that you are accountable for all your actions, within or without the dojo. What you do, you have to suffer the consequences in the end. Your teacher or guardian or parents should not have to take the fall for something that you have done.
  24. I started my training in a school because I wanted to learn discipline. My first instructor never taught me that. I learned all the moves with speed and power, but I had no control. After I quit, something happened that made me just lose it. My grandfather died. After that, I didn't feel any different, but I acted different. I was agressive, pushy, and even physical. I started this new Karate class to get back into things. I went for my first lesson and kicked the crap out of everyone. I didn't know it was non-contact. The Sensei called me up to fight with him. The first thing I said to him was "bring it on!" He then proceeded to kick my ass all over the entire dojo and make an example of me. I put up a good fight, but in the end I had a black eye, split lip, bruised ribs and kidneys that hurt like hell. I haven't left him since.
