The famous John wayne/Heymaker/roundhouse punches
Shane replied to dear john's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Isss That Youu John Wayynnne!! Gotta love those action shots -
Just Kick them as hard as you can, throw them to the ground and kick them again. Then that night after a few beers tell your friends hey I kicked this guy in the groin and I might have broke his pubic symphasis (the ligaments holding together the pubic region) causing the hips to cave, but I really didnt stop to see if it worked I just threw him to the ground kicked him again, and got the heck out of there. Then when you go to bed that night you can think to youself that it really didnt matter if it broke or not because you tell by the look on his face that it hurt like hell!!!!!

This can be a touchy subject. I do see why people have created new systems, I believe the truth for most of them is that their prior program probably lacked in some areas and they were trying to better it. Trying to start a system based on tradition would be so different from developing a mixed martial arts program. Like thai said we all do things our own way and prefer one thing to another, but when it comes to preserving tradition thats a whole different story. My Instructor started off only teaching traditional and then part way threw my training he started a mixed arts class that followed our traditional class. In no way was he trying to start a new traditional system he was just trying to show things in a realistic way that incorperated techniques outside of his traditional program. Having your way is the whole point, teaching your own program is great. So developing your own style of self defense based on mixed techniques (mixed martial arts) is fine as long as you have the experience needed to do so, or adding to a traditional system if allowed by those incharge of the program is fine, I believe that you can always add to, as long as you dont take away. BUT trying to start your own system based on tradition is a very touchy thing to do and would require years and years of experience and I dont see the point because these traditional systems based on traditon are already here, just waiting to be trained why try to be a copy cat of the old styles. So what I'm saying is NEW WAYS ARE AWSOME AND FINE but if your just going to create a new way that trains the old way, why even bother when you already have so many options out there.

Gear
Shane replied to Username's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I most definetly agree with thai about fairtex gear. The gear is built to last and built for hardcore training. A lot of gear wont last the type of training were doing at my school so when I get a new student I suggest to them when they decide to order their own equipment to make it fairtex. I'll put it to you like this, we just placed an order with them about 3 months ago and order $2500.00 worth of equipment between 10 of us and I'll tell you the gear is worth every penny. If you decide to go with the fairtex insteps go for the pro style they are only about $10 more than the standard but worth it, the fairtex training gloves are excellant also. And if you want a good bag look into the fairtex 6ft banana bag!!!!! -
I can truley say that yes it works for me. First My instructor had always been great at covering topics such as avoiding situations, paying attention to your surrounding and when to get the heck out of there before the you know what hits the fan. Basically alot of common since but for those of you who have been around the dojo long enough know that a lot of people lack common since. But we also all know that not every situation can be avoided so it has been tested rather it was during my days in the Military of at the bar with my fellow soldiers or in the line of duty as a police officer I have been able to test my training. The tricky part of using your skills as a police officer is you have to use the least amount of force neccesary to subdue the suspect, so punches, eye strikes, kicks and some of the more brutal techniques are a last resort, but the bennifit is most of the time (not all) you out number the suspect. Iam a firm believer in avoiding these situations and I was trained that and that is how I train my students.

Okay so you said you had about 3 different black belts coming together showing you different techniques from each one of their arts. I see where there is a problem with this type of training because you just have to much coming at you from instructors who might not be on the same page of music. Now as for mixed arts training, I think its great but I suggest those wanting to get into it you find a school that has a mixed martial arts program so that you can build the beginning foundation that is so important in your training. Just coming together and having instructors from different arts show you different techniques, just sounds like a cluster to me, unless you have a good amount of training. Now non of the traditional guys take this wrong okay, but I feel mixed martial arts can truley benifit you as a beginner and give you a very well rounded base foundation as long as the mixed arts program is well put together and all of the instructor are on the same sheet of music with the program.

Kung-fu effective?
Shane replied to MenteReligieuse's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Just about anystyle is going to have some good and some not so good techniques, but this is going to differ from person to person. What works for me might not work for you and that goes both ways. I believe alot of how realistic a style is, depends on the training methods of the school. You said you have been training kung fu for a few months now. What you need to look at is, Do you think you will be able to defend yourself in 6 months time from the first day of training? You you say no then you might want to find another school, if you said yes or even I'm pretty sure then your on the right track. GOOD LUCK -
I have also heard of this but dont practice it myself.

Just go visit the school, see if they offer a free class to those interested in joining, if they do take it, if not watch a class.

Selecting a Second art
Shane replied to pericles's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I'm going to agree with Fat Donkey on this, Muay Thai. Kicks, Punches, Knees, Elbows, Clinch Fighting. WOW YOU CANT GO WRONG HERE!!! It sounded like you were looking for a stand up art since you mention your kicking ablities and wanting to work more on those. So Muay Thai is great to add to your basket of tricks, PURE POWER -
I've seen this in some places, but the situation seems to vary from place to place. I've seen it where it is not a good thing and they are closed minded about outsiders, and then I've seen it to where it is a tight click and basically like a team environment but these types of groups are more welcoming to new students.

Elbow pads?
Shane replied to xnfx's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
volley ball foam pads these are nice for making your sparring a bit more intense thats what I would look into. The price isnt going to be to crazy and those pads give a good amount of protections (for the one your hitting hahaha) -
Everyone has the right to learn to defend themselves

Sometimes your going to agree, sometimes disagree and that is what makes these forums so good!

I've never heard of him either, but that really means nothing. If the price is wright go check it out!

When I started up my Kickboxing program I was amazed with the turnout of females. I dont offer a cardio kickboxing class, and that was not what they were looking for. Most of the women that train here love to get in here and do mitt work and learn to hit and kick hard. And once they get past the initial fear of sparring their good to go. I have talked to all of them about why they enjoy the classes so much and I have heard several reasons, great workout, stress relief, self defense, confidence builder, enjoys group activities, and ofcourse everyonce inwhile I get the Kickbutt response hahahahaha.

Yes it is a combo of Karate and Kung-Fu, created by the late Paul T. Sagawa. I trained under the Sandobal Family for 4 years in this style before I joined the service and I was just seeing if I could find any other students in this art. Its been about 8 years since I have trained this style. My Instructor from this system comes down to my school and we still train but not in the Sagawa Kara-Fu system.
