Uncontrolled fighter
Shane replied to Topic's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Your friend sparred not knowing the rules you sparred knowing the rules. Imagine if you had attacked as if there were no rules. I dont know your background but being trained to fight is being trained to maintain control and once you loose that control everything becomes a blur. Remember realistic training is the key, sparring is a must but keep it real!!!!! -
Kickboxing vs. Muay Thai?
Shane replied to Noob's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Are these 7 steps kind of like that 5 step technique in kill bill movie. Like maybe you kick some vital areas and then your attacker takes seven steps and their heart explodes. -
Backyard Boxing a Martial Art?
Shane replied to Kicks's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Wow that video reminds me of spring break in Mexico!!!!! Is that a martial art (NO!!!!!!!!) Thats something you do after a couple of cold ones on the beach. -
This can vary!!!! By this I mean some schools might let someone come in and be at a mid level rank where others require them to start at the begining levels. I will tell you how I run my school. If I have a black belt from another style come in to do a seminar or workshop then I want them to wear the rank of their style. Now one joins my class they must start at my white belt rank. This individual may progress faster than some or maybe not but I still have a minimum time in rank requirement, that must be met and there is techniques for each belt that each student must know to standard before being allowed to advance. Once these requirments are met to STANDARD then the student is promoted. If I bring a black belt into my program as a blue or green belt they still will not know the program for the belt below them at my school, regardless of what they know from outside my program. Also rank is only good within a school, because it means nothing on the street. So putting in your time at my school is a major factor and of course being at the proper skill level. Remember you dont loose your black belt your just working towards another.

I think its great you use to train martial arts and then kept training on your own, but I would suggest to go join a good martial arts school. Dont worry about the what rank your at, worry about getting some awsome training. Rank is a wonderful motivator and is a great for classroom structure but its not going to save you on the street. Good Luck on your search for a training facility.

Is hitting a heavy bag bare knuckle good for conditioning
Shane replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in Karate
Start off light and work your way up. I would suggest wraping your wrists. Wrist injuries are the worst, because they hold you back from training so try to avoid those and wrap. -
Work technique, slow it down and focus on proper technique the speed and power will come in time and when it comes you want to be sure your doing each technique correct. Also it would be a good idea to talk to your instructor about some of the different techniques to shadow boxing. GOOD LUCK

as far as being protected, I cant really say anything about that because I have no Idea. But he did domintate his fights with only a few basic techniques, and he was great at those techniques. It just goes to show that basics are the best BACK TO BASICS!!!!! I think he was a good stand up fighter from what I have seen of him on tape!

If you are only a striker then you need to use it to its fullest, by that I mean hitting hard while standing and if you get took down you need to go down hitting. Remember HARD HARD hits can help decide an outcome of a fight (HELP), also those elbows are an awsome tool for many positions you will find yourself in against a grappler. MOST OF ALL I WOULD SUGGEST learning grappling to go with your striking skills. The two together make an awsome combo and makes you a well rounded fighter since 80%-90% of fights go to the ground!!!!!! Go down hitting and then put your grappling skills to use!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK

The good news is more and more females are getting into the grappling arts. So get in now, it normally takes some time for females to get use to rolling around with male students as is takes some males time also. It is all part of training and you both are there to learn. Dont worry if you cant find a large amount of females in the art, that will not hold you back from learning and like I said more and more females are getting into it, so get in now and get the upperhand on all of them hahaha. GOOD LUCK

Talkative karate friends vs learning karate!
Shane replied to angelica d's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
All dojos are different, some allow joking and some talking while others allow none of that. But if the joking or talking is done in a disrespectable manner or at a time where it is disrespect then it is wrong in any training environment. My classes are very intense and serious but in a relaxed environment where most talking can be allowed and I encourage martial art related discussions among my student as long as the time is right. But I do not allow people to get carried away to where it would effect others training in anyway. We go to training to train, for those who only want to B.S. they can report to the coffee shop across the street for all I care because we dont have time for just that. So yes talk to your friend, and if that does not work go to the instructor and let them know that its becoming a problem and you feel its getting in the way of your training. GOOD LUCK -
I'll tell you what is an awsome piece of headgear!!!!! The fairtex full face head gear. It offers great protection without the cage. If the cage is what your looking for the other posts have some good links. Good Luck

Kickboxing vs. Muay Thai?
Shane replied to Noob's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
First it is hard to compare muay thai to kickboxing because there is not a set standard for kickboxing, I know my schools kickboxing program focuses on self defense(stand up of course) before sport or exercise. Muay Thai is awsome, but remember alot of kickboxing schools are starting to include alot of muay thai techniques and training methods into their schools. So find a school that offers kickboxing that the instructors main focus is training you for stand up self defense before sport. I know a few schools that are big into training for ring sports and they leave alot of great techniques out of the training due to rules. Dont think kickboxing as hands and feet, think of it as legs and arms. And remember knees and elbows are part of our legs and arms. -
Hey as far as equipment goes, a cup and mouthpiece is a must ofcourse. Since you are on a budget check with the gym and see what equipment they will supply. In time you will want to be sure to have the following for Muay Thai training Cup/groing protector Mouthpiece Shin Insteps (fairtex prostyle are nice/ a little spendy but worth it) Gloves (ask your instructor what Oz. they require for their sparring) Thai Shorts head gear (depending on school) Trust me about the shin insteps they help prevent injury and allow you to have more intense training sessions. Some people will tell you not to use them because you need to condition your shins, but keep in mind that is why we do shin conditioning drills!!!!! Check with the instructor and ask them about what equipment you need and if they offer any specials to students.

"Honorary" Rank Certificates
Shane replied to Shorinryu Sensei's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This post is a perfect example of why certificates really dont hold much ground in the martial arts. Being legit come from you as a person as a intructor or student. Someone could show me 10 high ranking black belt certificates but I'm really not even going to pay attention to them at all. I will see for my self during training sessions. I have not had to experience this to much, but that is because the people I train with choose not to get political with the martial arts. My Instructor did not even issue certificates with rank. So when ever asked to show proof of rank, we simply will tell you to come on in during class and train with us. I could show you a certificate or talk about how good my classes are all day long, but the only way your going to be able to tell is to come on in and check it out for yourself. Anyways I'm getting off of the subject, I know this type of thing going on, and certificates mean alot to the new student with no experience looking to join a school so these pieces of paper proabably help get people in the door of a dojo. But I know a piece of paper is not going to keep them coming threw that door. -
Chen and Yang style Tai Chi Chuan This is hard but I think the YOGA student could take them. Maybe a Vinyasa style that links poses in a flowing series that would warm and energize the body. Yeah the yoga student Just kidding/not trying to offend anyone out there. I have never studied any Tai Chi Chuan, but It was interesting reading the posts here.

To strike or to grapple
Shane replied to Vito's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
This is a hard one! I'm going with striking, I know most fights go to the ground well, I guess if I can only strike then I'm going down striking and I'm going to keep striking. I'm a firm believer in HARD HARD HITS I think they can help decide an outcome of a fight very fast, but ofcourse not always hits alone!!!!!!!! great post -
Hapkido or Prankration
Shane replied to Blade3's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
to find the better of the two styles we would have to find an individual with no martial arts training and split that person into 2. We would send one to a Hap.school and one to a Pan.shcool. After a set time we would bring the two (originally one) and have them fight to the death. The stylist still alive would determine the best of the two styles. Ofcourse this is impossible but would be the only way to find out what martial art is the best in any case. So I quess we will just have to all have our own opinions on each topic for now. UnRealistic but if you think about it this would be the only way to determine if any style is better than another. So much depends on the individual training that is why we cant make determinations of who's best because everyone is different. Anyways good post it gets people thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Hard to tell, but one thing is for sure and that is the mental aspect of the past would be way more intense than the mental aspect of most today. That could make all the difference in the world, also like you said the fact that they had so much time to perfect it with no rules, developing ultimate technique. Just a Thought

wat is myuai thai?
Shane replied to Maddwraph's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Muay Thai Kickboxing in my opinion is one of the best styles for stand up fighting. And I will agree you will be in awsome shape just from training in Muay Thai. Short Story When I opened up my school, my Instructor came down and lent me his leg kick pad(thai equipment) until I could get one, because regular kicking shields just dont seem to absorb enough of the thai leg kicks. My Kicking shield now is used only for front kicks and kids classes, because my adult students would destroy me in one session of training on thai kicks unless I use my proper thai equipment(thai pads, leg kick pad etc.) So that shows you the power of this awsome style and thats only talking about the kicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
