Learning alot to learning nothing at all
Shane replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You just have to keep tracking, and train hard. There is just so much info out there and you dont even get a real look at until your somewhere at the black level. Basically you learn all of these things to reach black but the biggest challenge is figureing out what works for you and what your prefered version of the techniques you have learned. Normally you have the general idea of your prefered methods etc. around the black level. And once that happens your ready to really start learning. Keep Tracking -
If your looking for a grappling art go the the jujitsu section

Two Styles as a Martial Arts Beginner
Shane replied to Bleeding Lion's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If your GoJu Ryu class offers more classes on top of what your taking now I would enroll in those rather than taking up another style. But if the Goju Ryu class is not giving you enough then try out another class and see. I'm a firm believer in mixing it up, but I also believe it is a good idea to focus on a base foundation before adding to much from to many people. But finding a school that is going to give you this base is hard. Anyways good luck. -
I dont think looking for a fight is that great of an idea

Is teaching essential for higher ranks?
Shane replied to Bart the Lover's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I'm all for having the upper ranks learning to instruct. You learn a lot from teaching others, its almost like learning all over again haha. Our brown belts are required to instruct a set number of classes, under the supervision of the Head Instructor as part of the minimum requirements for that belt. And then a Black Belt 1st has even more instructor development to go threw prior to reaching Black Belt 2nd that is our Full Instructor rank. But we work on installing some of these instructor skills into our students at early ranks also. When I trained the belt above you was one of your guides and it went like this the whole way, of course under supervision of a black belt. -
I myself wouldnt spend that kind of money on a split machine. But I"m not to big on being able to do the full splits, so if thats your goal and you have the cash go for it.

Young Ones, Go and wash your belts and you shall learn. You shall learn all over again as you wash all of your knowledge down the drain. Hahahaha you modern martial artists hahahaha washing your belt, is it worth loosing all of your knowledge hahaha foolish mortals. Oh man I'm being crazy here, just wash it or buy a better quality belt. I believe it was AngelaG saying something about would you buy an expensive orange belt. AngelaG come on you know you had your name embroidered on your orange belt.

I kind of see where your coming from on this topic. As times change so do we with it. So if someone was going to use the Ninja today, in the ways that the myths show them, then ya they would probably for sure need some up to date training on tech.

The best thing to do is ask, the thing the instructor can say is no!

Basics are the best in my opinion, and our program conitinues to train basics at all levels. Pretty much each level will have a primary focus of training that focuses on an area of basic techniques, and then once you advance pass the levels that have seperated various basics you reach a level that is an overall review of all basics. Pretty much we consider majority of our techniques basics but as you advance you learn more variations of the basics, different ways to apply one technqiue. KEEPING IT SIMPLE BACK TO THE BASICS ALWAYS

Whats Real Combative Arts Training
Shane replied to Shane's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Lets keep the posts coming I"m interested in hearing what others have to say. Thanks -
Yes people need to understand the difference between the two. Sparring is a must, but for someone who does not understand the difference between sparring and the real deal, it could build bad habits.

good luck, kick some butt
