Shane replied to Jbone1's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Ninja movies, dont know I've only seen the american ninjas -
You know I like all of them, Jackie Chan is very awsome to watch and is funny but holding his own agains Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris I dont think so. Jet Li is awsome to watch also I dont know much about his real world martial arts abilities but his a good actor hahahaha. And then there is Bruce and Chuck!!!!!! Chuck Norris was of course a great fighter of his time but you have to give Bruce Lee credit for his open mind and helping change the martial arts world. Good Post but I cant really say who is beter or not because I only know what I have read or seen on a tv

Shane replied to SoulAssassin's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
sounds like something a security guard would make up. A lot of these security guys are like that you find a lot of wanna beeeees! Trust me I know I did security for awhile after I got out of the Army and before I become a police officer and most of the guys I worked with were wanna beeee's. hahahahaha its funny -
Well my instructor never belonged to any organization, but his father who was his head instructor did oversee all of the belt promotions. And now I have my own school and I dont belong to any organization, but I plan on having my Instructor oversee higher rank promotions. So I can see how having an organization can be helpful in ways but in someways the politics I think would just be to much for me. I train with a very open mind, and so does my instructor and we are always adding to, but not taking away.

Its hard to say because it can be different from situation to situation. If your instructor is working with you and guiding you and your are learning and feeling like your improving on techniques and progressing and ofcourse having fun doing it then your instructor is probably okay. I do believe that a good instructor will give you a variety of techniques and allow you to figure out which ones work best for you, rather than telling you its his/her way or the highway. The must work for you not against you in that aspect.

More Successful in real Comabt(not sparring)-Feet or Hand
Shane replied to Carnage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hand strikes are more easily applied but if a situation allows for a low kick I'll take it. A nice thai kick to the thigh or a blade kick to the knee would be nice. Foot stomps are pretty easy to pull off and dont leave at a major disadvantage but then again niether will a kick if you apply it at the right time and know how to properly execute it. -
We use them all of the time in my Mixed Arts class while sparring. I dont have any kickboxers that have reached the level where sweeps are introduced to their training schedule, but once they reach that level and are properly trained on them you bet you will see them doing them while sparring

What does it take to start a school?
Shane replied to thaiboxerken's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Okay I just opened my school 6 months ago. It really was not that difficult to get into. I had to ofcourse find a location and get my state business lic. covering what services I have (I have more than just MA training), then there is the insurance part lucky for me my wife is a Ins. Broker so that helped me toreally understand the importants of my insurance coverage. So after you get your Business Lic (state), and your insurance you still need to get a city business lic. (most places) apply at your city hall for this. This whole time you need to be getting the word out about your school ADVERTISING like crazy. I find the best advertising is word of mouth in my area, but I'm not in a large city. The local paper etc. I did not jump into this business with everything I wanted to. I had experience business owners who gave me the advice to slowly let it grow, so thats what I'm doing now I just brought in more gear, and I'm getting ready to expand the training area no later than Jan 1st 2005 but I'm taking in nice and slow and its working for me great. Martial Arts is only half of my business my location use to be a tanning salon so I kept two tanning rooms and beds and those are great since there is no other tanning place in this town. So depending on what your location is you might want to consider bringing in another service. -
Class Prices
Shane replied to oscar2010's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Prices are going to vary, a lot depends on location. The most expensive class at my school is $65.00 a month, but you go down to the city and you will have a hard time finding one under $90.00 -
Find a school that you can really enjoy going to training. Get out there and watch a few different classes, see if the school offers a free class if they do take it. After looking around decide what one you would enjoy the most.

I agree groin protection is a must. There has been several times I'm glad I have it on just holding thai pads hahahaha and I'm not kidding. Another thing holding leg kick shields for low thai kicks its nice to have one because the vibration alone hurts like hell

Yeah it seems like there are judo gis everywhere and jujitsu gis are hard to find. Juka sells a good quality jujitsu gi for a good price you might want to check them out. https://www.juka.com a judo gi will work just fine but it all depends on what you want
