  1. LoL it sure does remeber goju is chinese through and through
  2. I just did my first point sparring tournament and got DQ'ed for spin side kicking my opponent and knocking the wind out of him. All the Sensei at the tournament made such a fuss about my control but the dude jumped onto my foot! No joke my kick was still in its chamber. If that guy believes that he could defend himself on the street I feel bad for him. Anyway after that experience I will never do a point tourney again it was so lame, in full contact what I did was good but in karate tag..............
  3. The oyo in goju is based on centerline theory, trapping hands and in close fighting. The highest level application is based on pressure points from the bubshi. My Sensei loves questions especially ones he doesn't know the answers to.......
  4. I think everyone is scared at first, most won't admit it though. First things first relax and realize that you are a martial arts teacher and not superman. Bottom line you are going to make mistakes don't beat yourself up over them. Secondly have a detailed lesson plan don't wing it. Lastly have fun man if you are not enjoying yourself their is a good chance no one else is
  5. White belt, difference between keage and kekomi mae geri, repetition is the mother of skill.
  6. I have always thought that the term master meant master of ones self as is the goal of martial arts. I used to smoke and it was my master, I didn't possess the discipline to quit does your grand master or is he a slave to cigarettes.
  7. I disagree, I worked as a bouncer and have seen many fights go this way. Buddy hits on other guys girl, then other guy smashes beer bottle on buddy's head and then turtling, while other guy feeds uppercuts at buddy. In Canada we have a lot hockey style fights as well, they grab on to the shirt and whale on each other and maybe jersey each ther. pulling his shirt over his head so he can't see and then rapid fire punches. Some of these guys can have hundreds of street fights under thier belts so I wouldn't call them untrained, undisciplined yes, untrained no. As for dealing with scenario (A) don't hit on a guys girlfriend
  8. The Judokan way of doing that closely resembles the pre-war version
  9. We have this one gentleman at my club that is a completely immune to getting scored on in point sparring, he argues and groans and man it is so annoying we just let him win so we don't have to hear it
  10. White when doing goju and a blue one for judo
  11. I'm sure the wing chun guy will win I mean it is a completely superior art just ask any wing chun practioner they'll tell you. As for excuses why is no one making up reasons why this unfair for the karate guy. It is probably because everyone expects the wing chun guy to lose and are trying to save face already. With exception to you drunken monkey you have faith in your system and you realize that the rules are the same for both fighters. It handicapps both fighters, its not like a judoka vs a kickboxer and removing all ground fighting. I think it will be a interesting carnival but in the end it will be the fighter that wins the fight not the style.
  12. I trained at a awesome dojang with great instructors but the belt grading fees were ridiculous, plus I was getting a belt every month almost, it was a belt factory and I didn't even know it. On the other hand I have a friend who runs a great dojo, so becareful if you choose TKD, scratch that just becareful all styles have mcdojos.
  13. I used to use inddor soccer shoes (no cleats) at my old kickboxing club they were great because of the durability. Nowadays I swear by barefeet for the connection to the ground gripping with your toes and stuff. As for your question about realisim, do you wear your winter jacket while trainning too? what about jeans ? My point is that let comfort dictate what you where in the dojo.
  14. In Barrie we have three goju dojos and right near us an army base which boasts a large goju ryu karate group.
  15. Angelica, kids need to learn karate to not just play games, which I am sure jane doe is doing. As for my school I assure you it is full of very happy kids. The trick is disguised repetition, through different drills, constant reassurence and lots of love. Very rarely do I do anything traditional with beginner kids, however the more advanced kids have the discpline to endure much more traditional trainning.
  16. Did you ever think that these games develop the skill needed to be proficient at martial arts. You seem like the type of person that disagrees with teaching karate to young children, so what are you doing on this thread. Are you here to share some drills or are you here to gives us your opinion on something entirely different? If the later is you then please start a new thread on the topic. I have another really fun drill that builds upper body strength as well as being fun. It is called trip the tiger, get everyone to partner up then face each other in push-up position. The goal is to trip your partner by pulling their arms out from under them so much fun for adults too
  17. How about mushindo ? the way of no-mind lol
  18. Thanks for the tip equaninimus
  19. A closed mouth gathers no foot Live simply so that others may simply live-Ghandi Man who go to bed with itchy bum wake up with smelly finger
  20. dying is so much easier than living so it isn't death that scares me it is life
  21. cool incorperating kempo in ground fighting never would have thunk it. I do enjoy his pointers, after all he is quite well know and is lighting fast
  22. Yes sir it will, at a taekwondo seminar we used them and my legs were sore for days
  23. In a BJJ dojo that type of mount escape is turned into a cross arm lock. I know this because I was taught an identical mount escape an tried it on a blue belt BJJ practioner and bam I was tapping. However his stand up stuff is very cool and best of all free, can't beat that with a bat
  24. I am learning to speak japanese with help of audio cd's for a trip to okinawa that I plan on taking next year. THis cd's are most helpful with regards to pronounciation so it isn't a concern plus I think it adds a nice traditional air to a dojo when you hear proper japanese terminology and ettquite.
  25. You mean Sumo stance sheiko dachi is sumo stance. Kiba dachi is horse anyway, I get students preparing for black belt to hold for 15 minutes whie holding weights and stepping forward, they try and last for 15 minutes, quite exhausting !
