  1. I would just relax I think everyone went through a period of cockiness as we began to aquire some real skill. I call it bruce lee fever, you start to think you are the greatest thing since the little dragon. This is an important hill to climb for when you get kicked off it and everyone does and you awake at the bottom, which you do it spawns humilty which is crucial for longevity in the martial arts. Remember it is a big world and there is always someone better, who cares if someone is cocky for the truly skilled are quiet and humble
  2. Well regardless of wiether or not you passed if you gave it your all then you will succeed in whatever you do
  3. It missed one seiunchin one of goju's most famous kata
  4. I completely agree with manuelito stick with your style, it is just a piece of cloth after all
  5. I always laugh at people that have not studied a style yet trash it, seems like a combination of fear and ignorence, I have trained thai and know it is strong but there are other styles that are strong as well
  6. You said it MJ, after we made the switch from a modified Japanese system ( Don Warnner), it felt like I was learnig the real thing, This style of karate was so deep and effective it was shocking, I never looked at karate the same way since, well okinawan karate
  7. it is sad that man exploits himself, his heritage and the martial arts for what and why, very sad
  8. Kiai is a technique just like everything else, it must be trainned. If you know sanchin it helps with your kiai because you draw the breath from your belly. I am known for my kiai, I can startle someone who is expecting my kiai because it is so sudden I say YA or HIYA real old school but effective
  9. I think that the modern conception of karate is based on the japanese art which is unfortunate because the orignal systems had so much to offer. As for this article you read, did the practioner study both Japanese and Okinawan karate because I have and well okinawan goju is much more comprehensive IMHO.
  10. I love mukso the meditation that preceeds and accompanies trainning it helps me to reflect on what I have learned
  11. I think the guy on top had excellent fighting skills and I think the guy on the bottom will agree
  12. My uncle was nidan under Masami Tsuroka and had the most amazing zanshin, I mean sneaking up on my uncle was just about impossible. If you managed to sneak up on him he would react so quickly it truly was amazing. Lastly he would always have his sai sticking out of his duffle bag and I thought they were the coolest things ever. End of story I convinced him to teach me and I have been trainning one way or another since then
  13. the more I train the more I realize that wing chun and goju really have alot in common
  14. Sasori te on a beginner level there is a break at a higher lever it is a vital point knock out at the highest level it becomes a part of a much larger sequence and is used for trapping as is almost everything in goju
  15. I will hold my maximum stretch for no longer than 1 min but twice a week I will hold for 20 minutes about 80 percent of my maximum stretch and I have seen great results in overall flexiabilty and leg strength
  16. Try the gladiator gi it is made by pro force and is a real bargin compared to some of those other gi's but it matches up quite nicely in quality. I compare it to doing karate in a bathroom, quite sweaty at first but great once you get used to it
  17. It may sound strange but we will use a outward middle block while transfering from one stance to another generating power with the hips this is done while being "in tight". And this all offensive none of it is considered defensive
  18. I would politely disagree, I am not saying that shotokan is not strong but it bears little in common with okinawan karate, which is where the art was born in a combination with chinese martial art and the indigneous fighting art simply known as Ti. I have trained with both japanese and okinawan practioners and with out a doubt the japanese have altered the original system. Now I never stated that one was better than the other, that was your staement, I think both are good but in Japan's rush to make karate her own she left some things out
  19. Sounds like you want a copy of the bubishi in it are very broad guidlines for this sort of thing. To get more specific you might want to include some advice from an internal stylist.
  20. For in close stand up fighting I have to say goju even over wing chun
  21. Sorry to double post but sancin was brought from china long before 1910 and long before uechi ryu
  22. Sanchin is all you need
  23. The difference is that one comes from okinawa and the other is a japanized version of the later. In okinawan karate china hand is still quit evident while japanese karate it is all empty hand and is in my opinion a water down version of the original. Now before I start a flame war I think japanese karate is very strong especially kyokushin but really it is like a style of kickboxing okinawan karate is something else entirely
  24. Me too and I am a black belt, miyagi sensei once said that if you practised Sanchin thirty times a day one would need no other kata. Now I am not sure exactly why he said this and I would appriciate any theories because I am trying his recommendation, gotta alotta free time
  25. Hi friends, shodan in jundokan goju ryu welcome to the form
