  1. I believe that the style you end up really enjoying will suit your personality. For instance if you seek balance in your style and life goju (hard/soft style) might be for you. Now if you are agressive I think shotokan might be a better route evasie the Shorin ryu etc......... Do some research find what style you would suit you persona best then train like you are dying for in fact you are so the clock is ticking
  2. yeah seiunchin is a great kata but I also enjoy but sometimes hate shisochin it has a great tai chi fell to it. I also really enjoy sanseryu, I feel it is a highly underated kata with quite posiibly the greatest two person application ever.
  3. i would argue anyone who says point sparrinng is a complete wate of time. While it is not a real street fight what is ? Full contact and NHB is a misnomer, there are hold and strikes that aren't allowed and usually have some sort protective gear allowed. Not a street fight not even close but I would agree that it is a closer simulation than point sparring. The main benefit of point sparring (ask rick roufus) is the ability to time you technique just so, that you can hit someone unware increasing the chance of a knock out regardless of the art.
  4. I will be honest the more I train the less I worry about anything but my basics. They are what will get me out of a jam if the need arises.
  5. Friend do yourself a favor and save alot of cash get a gladiator gi it will cost you about 60$ so it is a bargin. Trust me it is thick brushed cotton it feels like doing karate in a bathrobe
  6. This is the dojo kun from the Jundokan: Be mindful of your courtesy with humbleness Train yourself considering physical strength Study and contrive seriously Be calm in mind and swift in action Take care of yourself Live a plain and simple life Do not be too proud of yourself Continue training with patience and steadiness (Translated by Tetsunosuke Yasuda Sensei) The Jundokan was formed by Eichi Miyazato with the purpose of keeping the kata of Goju ryu intact and unchanged. The kata of the Jundokan is devoid of any flash whatsoever as they maintain the pracitcallity and simple deadliness of the art. Sanchin is of primary importence as every class begins and ends with this kata. Perserving the old trainning methods is very important as well, Hojo undo (conditioning with implements) is still how karateka workout at the Hombu dojo in Okinawa.
  7. I will tell you what I tell all of my students relax. Bruce Lee said in sparring one should be playful but play serious. THis may sound like a paradox and I guess it kind of is but if your are scared of being hit it just increases the change of you closing your eyes while someone is attacking which will get you hit for sure. So breath take you lumps now so you can give them later.
  8. Goju for life the breathing in Tensho is referred to as daoist breathing and is done backwards when compared to Sanchin kata. Now as for the route that you breath should take I am well aware that it should end up in your hara (dantien) but the two sanchin that we practice take different routes with regards to how the breath ends up in the hara. Out of curiousity goju for life I was wondering do you do okinawan or japanese goju ?
  9. This is going out to all the Goju guys out there especially the higher ranking practioners. I was wondering if some could explain the purpose of the daoist breathing (Backwards) and the route that you breath(Ki) should take while doing this kata. From my experience very few sensei know this kata let alone the important details regarding its proper performance. Also any information or theories regarding the creation of this kata, would be great for discussion.
  10. Yes Taira sensei, that is who I meant but the one that trained at the Jundokan under Miyazato Sensei.
  11. This guy is a legend in okinawa so much so that people line up out side his dojo just to get a glimpse of his incredible oyo. I am getting the chance to train with him and I am wondering has anyone here ever heard of him or trained with him. He trains Jundokan Goju ryu in Okinawa but is going to be in Arizona Thanksgiving weekend
  12. Kimura took grandfather was well unstoppable ask the gracies'
  13. I find the topic itself quite humorous because in goju-ryu the founder of the style never awarded a single black belt to anyone yet somehow I wear one something I always found odd.
  14. If you get a chance to study goju ryu especially okinawan goju ryu do it is a fantastic art with all the secrets of chinese wushu but with straight forward effective techniques. it teaches toughness but incorperates the ability to be yeilding in the face of a storm. I could on but it would stop my Sanchin trainning, remember breathe into the tanden....................................... !
  15. aefibird the Gladiator gi I bought in las vegas at the MAIA supershow. As far as I know it is available from AWMA, check their website AWMA.com best of all it won't cost you $200
  16. Tekken is good all the streetfighters were fun, samurai showdown and king fighters were cool but double dragon is the best
  17. I would agree with Sauzin, don't forget what you learned in TKD but leave it in the dojang and start fresh in your new dojo. Pay close attention to sanchin kata it is crucial, get used to sanchin dachi and Shiko dachi (sumo stance). I did taekwondo for years and I had a rough time because I was trying change my TKD into goju which is quite impossible but stick to it, I did and am forever grateful
  18. I stink 2.5 and every year I train it gets lower
  19. I have a Gladiator brand gi and I would match quite well with any gi out there 14oz brush cotton tournement cut short legs and arms it feels like a bath robe but completely mobile
  20. Never had the symptoms that mark bishop had mentioned and even though I fell it is an excellent book on the whole I feel he misrepresented Sanchin kata quite badly perhaps he missed some crucial details on performing the kata itself the best place to get details about this kata is form chinese masters who call it San Chen and is done quite softly without any of the pigeon toe typically seen with goju ryu. It is a chinese kata after all
  21. Yeah I agree with warlock the fsatest way to go is grappling specifically BJJ. Those are some very practical techniques and you learn to aply them against a struggling human in radori that knows the same techniques and is trying to use them against you. However that being said you couldn't pick one style over he other unless you specify the criteria, for instance if are looking at a practical combative style then I would go with a south american form of grappling but for health and fitness I would choose karate but again i have to agree with warlock it helps to have a really knowledgeable teacher.
  22. I have been buzzed by a kyusho practioner that seemed to know what he was doing, it was pretty cool and it definitely caught my attenetion but his helper who was a 25 year old master rubbed me the wrong way and left a bad taste im my mouth about the whole system.
  23. gotta be saifa I find it very tough
  24. I working on sinking in nekko ashi dachi and kururunfa
