Didn't Miyagi say if you practice sanchin kata thirty times a day you need not practice any other
-
I was badly disqualified in kumite - badly.
-
Okay this is important watch your distance a solid head butt will ruin your day plus if you are committed to defend yourself be absolutely resolute do not back down one inch. Lastly if a street fighter turns away expect the sucker shot and keep your hands up real important
-
me too hit first hit fast hit hard but only after I have tried to run away first

Always a pleasure MJ thank you for such a detailed answer, now a specific question for you, how should I feel while doing Sanchin kata for instance i have done chen style tai chi and while doing different forms I have experienced a tangiable chi flow and I am curious if you have while during sanchin and if have any visualation techniques to aid the Iron sirt process. As for practice I don't really do any other kata anymore well san se ryu every now and then but I am taking Miyagi advice to heart

Some pointers well learn some more about karate before you say it's all linear that is about it oh one more thing if you win here then what a different dojo then what another and another and another........................ to what end. True martial arts lies in the perfection of its particpants principles not for fighting for there is always someone stronger........... always

I agree with you PAL on the point about Funakoshi and I think shorin ryu is a powerful style I really think that if goju practioner got inside to close range fighting distance you would be in severe trouble but getting there might be a trick, The footwork in Shorin ryu is very effective and elusive so I think it would be a good match
-
I am Goju ryu practioner and have always believed that and have been told that Sanchin is a form of Iron shirt Qigong. I am curious if any internal practioners good give me some pointers on iron shirt qigong and how they train for it.

I have read that book too and I remember the part you are talking about and while I am in agreement with everyone else about actually turning invisible earlier in the book it talks about being inconspicous to the point where people hardly notice you at all this type of trainning goes on at the CIA, they have to a point where even trying to remember one of thier operatives faces is almost all but futile. While it certainly isn't invisible it is the next best thing
-
With martial trainning it is important that type of ego is replaced with strong spirit otherwise you will train someone who may misuse your teachings. It sounds like the person in question needs to be trained very hard to temper his agression with humilty

Kata is karate it is the basis for the entire art and when done properly it creates an icrediable fighter but it takes many years to benefit you as a fighter because learning to do it properly is a challenge. I am not reffering to the movements in the kata those take no time to learn it is what transpires in the mind that is essential to fighting. As for kata being introductory sparring, I don't think kata and sport fighting (modern kumite) have anything to do with each other

It is called the lone samurai, the life of Miyamoto Musashi by William Scott Wilson Great stuff too.

Wing Chun Kung Fu or Goju Ryu Karate
kotegashiNeo replied to Dr. Flem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would say that if the goju pplace you are looking at has a lot of high kicks in it it isn't really goju and as for centerline striking and trapping wing chun doesn't have anything on okinawan goju but only if it is taught properly -
Wing Chun Kung Fu or Goju Ryu Karate
kotegashiNeo replied to Dr. Flem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I say goju but only if it is okinawan goju and it is a good school, ie the sensei has sort okinawan affiliation ie, jundokan, meibukan or shorei kan -
Close shotochem I have been reading the latest biography of Musahai in which many excerpts for the unfettered mind appear but it is defintely on my next book list.

Read Zen in the martial arts or Richard kims the classical man

I constantly have conversations in cat stance while visualizing yoko geri from san se ryu

I have to go zen on this one. In the book zen in the martial arts it tells a story about this guy who in sparring is losing and tries to pull out some tricks in order to score on his vastly superior opponent. This backfires badly and he is defeated afterwards he talk to his sensei who just happens to Ed parker. Sensei parker draws a line with chalk on the floor and asks how can you make this shorter? The man gives several answers including cutting the line into several smaller pieces. Sensei Parker shook his head and then drew a second line longer than the first and asked how does the first line look now ? The man replied shorter, and which point sensei parker said it always better to strengthen your own line or knowledge than to try and cut your opponents line. he then asked the man to think about what he had just said

Interesting topic I have heard that in fedual times the japanese samurai would not focus on any one thing but try to keep their mind unfettered. The idea was if you were confronted by ten swords and stopped to counter each one the other nine would get you, however if you acted without letting your mind stop on anyone person or thing, you would be able to defeat all ten. So in regards to the question posed look nowhere and be everywhere.

Controlling adrenaline shakes....
kotegashiNeo replied to zerohour's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
you make them sound like a bad thing. he is what you do, everytime you hand shakes think I am not shaking fast enough try to shake faster then take that energy and place a target on the person's nose then unleash it until that person is no longer standing but be fast and certain -
Try this guys pay attention to only the behaving students ignore the unruly students. Praise the leadership skills of the good students and ignore the bad students. Now children that want attention can only get it by behaving simple and very effective once you get good at it
