good point white warlock in the last tounament I was in I was disqualified because I was unaware of the rules. They made a big deal about tried to make me feel like I didn't have any contol but really I just felt bad for the guy I was sparring he was hunting for the DQ because he just didn't have the skill. Watch out for that!

I like traditional because in kata I visualize doing horrible things to my attacker. This is crucial because it creates strength of spirit and a bloodlust that if fully unleashed in combat would overwhelm your average joe. That is not something you can aquire in sparring because you must maintain a level of respect for that person. My attacker in kata dies everytime and I kick him while he is down then I pick him up so I can hit him some more. So when it comes time to defend myself I set upon that person a terrible force of will that only comes from the visualization of properly practicing kata.

You can lead with a cross. Skilled fighters do it all the time, it is set up like everything else with some kind of piercing attack etc jab, front kick, Then bam a lead right or left cross. It can be quite a suprise and very effective because of its unorthodox nature. -
Okay after the first 270 degree turn you end up in a left leading forward stance with left hand on top but before that the right hand is on top and I see no visual switch, also I am not sure weither is ichi or ni but there is a cresant kick towards the end if that helps

I have mpeg of sakagawa no kon but I can't figure out the moves they are doing. There are some hand switches that I can't seem to pick-up. Wondering if anyone here knows this kata and can explain the finer points

I have done something very similar, do it trust me it is hard but if you love martial arts it is worth it. ps. say good bye to your social life you may say big deal at first but give it a year

The strength of Shotokan lies in its kata oyo just like any other style.

I read a story that in japan in the 40's if you joined a karate club and wanted to leave all the students would line up, you would shake hands with each one and they would punch you full forcein the face, that is what I call rough. Never let a instructor harm you they don't have that right. This isn't the 40's anymore. If someone strikes you hard in a demonstration never let them demonstrate on you again

the Chi-na ersion of this called one post supports the heavens and the shoulder is all the up to the armpit and you grab the fingers to add pressure

It is a fun past time doing ariels and 540s. It is like doing anything else, it takes practice and streching, oh yeah a membership at at a gymnastics place. My friend was doing a jacknife (Backflip) split kick landed right on his face because he didn't have a spotter.

The section after the third backfist is very important and technical if the sideways step isn't wide enough you will not end up on the same spot that you started on. Make sure your knee is belt high and you look to right before you kick then the front right after. The final step before the mawashi uke is crucial as well if it is not long enough again you will miss your mark or beginning point. Most importantly you must convince all that are watching you that you are fighting an actual oppenent this may be tricky depending on how much bunkai you actually have been taught. There is more but that is enough for now

Look up Fumio Demura or Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi both have instructional DVD's that are first rate authentic okinawan kobudo

Try this when ever the sensei is talking snap to a crisp attention stance and jsut stare at your instructor let nothing this guy says back your focus. You can use this guy as a trainning tool, he just has yellow belt fever, yellow belt now Bruce Lee later

I think people would get seriously injured

In goju we have a similar stancebut it is a little higher and we call it kake dachi
