  1. wow that is truly scary karateka, what would you have done if that police officer hadn't been there
  2. A friend of mine checked into it you have to work as a factory labourer to pay for your room and board and you don't even get to train japan until the end of the program. They save YOUR money for you from YOUR job for the trip. If it isn't the single best chance to learn in japan I don't know what is
  3. I have it heard it referred to as ushiro yoko geri because instead of putting your knee up in front of you it comes up facing away or back. As for why would anybody spin or turn away ask Mr Ueshiba he might have a few pointers about the merits of circular motion
  4. what was the tread on again? I am right you are wrong I am sure it was something else but I can't seem to remember ............
  5. Kata because it encompasses all aspects of martial arts, it has kihon waza, kumite waza and everthing in between
  6. Oh Kung fu practioners so sensitive !!
  7. The only problem as I see it is that a grappler isn't going to just sit up and through punches. They don't have to, they have submissions and if mr tatum tried that on me from that position I roll him right into an armbar. Standing up however I will say this he is very quick but should leave ground work to grapplers.
  8. Ripper wrote And in answer to the original question of this thread; none, because I don't think there are any 'masters I have to diasgree with you on that one completely. There have been plenty of masters over the centuries of martial arts. Master has no supernatural implication whatsoever. They simply have put the time into trainning to master a style of karate. Miyagi sensei was not indestrucable he was just a man who took his art seriouly enough to pass it on to others, not just parts but every little detail. Having good karate is knowing one's self, having mastery is the harmony of one's mind and body
  9. I have heard of matsumura before but I choose those three because of not only their skill but also their contribution to the arts. I f I was judging straight by skill I would choose Miyamoto Musashi or the man that supposedly took him out Gonnusuke.
  10. Thanks for repeating what I said sevenstar
  11. I would say Chogen Miyagi Sensei and Sosai Mas Oyama and of course Gichin Funikuashi. I don't think there are any greater masters anywhere.
  12. work your hand to foot speed and foot to hand speed with vigor it is how you can distinguish the good from the I need to spar more...........
  13. Isshin ryu has some goju kata in it. you learn new stuff everyday
  14. The ironic part about JKD is that the creator stressed simplicity yet practioners endlessly debate high brow philosophy
  15. every sweep in judo requires kuzushi or a break in balance. Kuzushi can be done in straight line or a curved one and in every direction. Combined with Tai-sabaki (body control) and Tsukuri (proper body alignment). To make a really long technical lesson short judoka can sweepany stance just the same as long as the person is upright, If you have the stance judo has the sweep. What sweep was this instructor talking about: deashi hari,or are we including knee wheels as well or, just specifically foot sweeps because there are lots of good reaps and supporting lift throws that would seem like sweeps that aren't. Anyway don't like to hog a thread but such a generalized statement by a black sash it just seems like the dude hasn't done his homework which is a shame because he is now eating his foot...........sweep
  16. I learned to do a spinning back kick originally from a taekwondo L stance and besides kake dachi there really isn't a faster way of executing this technique. I like however the thought of slowing it down by doing it from zenkustsu I perhaps will have my students try it as control with this tech is super important especially in kumite.
  17. Rich2K3 wrote , but if u think about how many ppl live in china; 1.3 billion, and i'm sure that Kung fu would probably be their most popular MA, it might be that Kung fu is the most popular style. I am not sure about this but I don't believe that everyone in china take kung fu just like everyone in India doesn't take kalipreaht. Yeah I think for students it is shotokan but goju has over a half million students and climbing
  18. Judo is the way maximizing your energy through the most efficient means. Maximum results minimum energy. It is not a hard style, judo means soft way. Now Ai Ki Do is largely misunderstood. It translates into harmonious (Ai) energy ( very loose translation for Ki) and way (do). It is entirely based on non linear motion and non violent threat deterents. If someone projects ki at you blend with it never resist
  19. Yeah uechi a ray of light in this forum actual advice for once not just people arguing. Passive blocking covering up where the person is striking you must big hands. Seriously though one advantage to parrying a technique is that you can move while doing it to gain tactical advantage.
  20. Hai I get you, and you couldn't be more right the style, the ring entrance and most importantly the yellow briefs he fought in joe Son all the way
  21. THe truth behind kata is explained in the Bubishi, and I assure you it is most certainly not a religious dance. I don't mean to smash your thread but you should spend less time typing more time practicing kata and the bunkhai (application of the kata).
  22. Try this one a parent of one of the instructors said this to our Sensei. I can't believe you gave that person a black belt. I mean what were you thinking. I thought she was gonna get it but he just said calmly he earned it so I gave it to him but the his tone I will never forget eerily calm with a touch of shut your mouth before I kill you.
  23. Speaking of farts I once had the entire sho dan ho class sitting down going over japanese terminnology and as I was demostrating yoko geri I managed to time a fart at the exact completion of the technique in front 25 students. I told them they would only learn that technique at black belt
  24. Too funny a dancing hippo it works on so many levels
  25. mine is lazy a--ed destroyer
