  1. You are really on to something most of the kakushita (hidden moves) are backwards in goju. If it is the same in shotokan I would love to compare notes sometime.
  2. No I do not but by his name sounds like I should
  3. Another technique that works well with joint locks is bunting. I would avoid this one in the dojo but it works like this someone punches at you you parry the technique into a pointy elbow, capitalize on this pain and execute your most deadly joint lock.
  4. [/b]Goju Geki sai dai Ichi Geki Sai Dai Ni Sanchin Safia Seiunchin Sanseiryu Shishoshin Sepai Seisan Kurunfa Penchurin(Suparinpei) Tensho
  5. Seiunchin what a beautiful kata but what a ugly discussion I understand the need for proper kata but more importantly proper conduct. To bash a student is to bash yourself. The Yagis would be ashamed at behavior like that. Tradition is not more important than integrity. Most importantly"whenI started Karate I was beginner and will die a beginner" O sensei Tsuraoka. As for the Kata itself I am an instructor in goju and tommarker I couldn't have put any better.
  6. I would choose after a couple yaers in Judo the ordinary street thug will pose no threat to you
  7. For you becaus of your height disadvantage I would recomend that you simply time you opponent while he is attacking you. To do this remain pefectly still but aware when you are in his stiking range as he commits get him first, sidestep whatever but make him come to you it is easier than trying to get past longer arms and legs
  8. Yeah for sure Miyamoto Jigaro Kano, Chogen Miyagi and Bruce Lee, I really repect him, but why did he hate kata so much. As for people that are alive Jet li would be pretty cool and Randy Couture
  9. try this when applying a joint take out your oppenents balance by sweeping a foot or uprooting them by tilting their head back by pusihing their head. Gine them too things to worry about not just one
  10. Jumping kicks in my humble estamation are pure ego. Some will no doubt disagree but speed and strength make a kick not the ooohhh awww of on lookers. I gave them up the impact on the joints shorten your overall life span as a martial artist.
  11. I took a style of wushu that brok down each technique into 4 parts geometrical verfication rotational torque, muscle tension and finally Speed. This style dates back with utmost assurity to the shaolin temple. So not to be rude but A) shotokan is not the only style (jeet kune do anyone?) that does this and Nakayama did not invent said concept
  12. Wow alot of opinions the only thing I can is add is that kata is a beautiful expression of a culture that very few understand or except
  13. I think that martial arts are way under priced becaus of what they provide the character benefits look at health club dues martilal arts provides so much more than a health club. Charge what is fair for you services
  14. Hi everybody my name is neil. I have been studying martial arts for a long time all different types and really hope that I can add something to your really awesome website In friendship Kotegahineo
  15. I really think intensity you put into trainning is going to dictate the results. boxers are known for having intense workout if you do the same as karateka your mind will be ready to defend.
  16. In Goju because it is such a heavily chinese influenced style of karate that many secrets exsist in it's kata for instance many of the elbow strikes are to the most unexpected places. The reson for this is all goju kata are based on striking vital points in a certain succession to acheive desired results.
  17. The advice I give all beginners is to breathe and relax. Firstly the breathing part sounds too simple but when you are scared it's the last thing on your mind. Secondly relaxing can be quite a challenge if you are not breathing. To relax put yourself in a comfortable state of mind, like just before you are about to go to sleep except your focus should remain on breath control then do your best remember every time you are hit it is a lesson, the only scary thing is not learning that lesson.
  18. Try this one it requires some speed but works well if you can pull it off jab punch Leave arm extended wait for counter to ribs use extened arm to circle parry the jab cross jab leave arm extended wait for counter....... front kick, roundhouse, jab roundhouse
  19. Yeah I'm with spider on this one it's biting time. bite to eyes nose throat whatever.
  20. try this sell a front kick to your partner then bring up a knee the quickly execute jab, reverse front kick repeat if successful
  21. I would like to see a BJJ take on a tradtional koubodo expert and use the spider guard lol. martial arts are journey of self discovey not technique.
  22. Kensai I believe Ki to be an extension of focus. Try it if you do any weapons forms. Strike with the tip of the weapon on a very small area very quickly see how accurate you are. Then mentally project your focus beyond the tip of said weapon and this should help both speed and accuracy. As for fighting anyone here ever fought a yudansha ranked akidoist in a street fight ?
  23. Contact is essential to getting hurt, no contact is essential to getting your butt kicked. Medium contact huh not sure what that means. Know only this best defense for punch or kick is mace right in the eyes ouch !
  24. All styles good none superior when life is threatened, trainning not style dictate results. If mind ready to defend it will, if not, then no style will help. Harsh muay thai trainning will teach you to destroy. Harsh Karate trainning teach you responsibilty of such power. Defeating someone is easy compared to the reality of conquering oneself
  25. It seems no one has any technical advice just esoteric pointers. Southpaws are different fighters because they are left handed simple no. A person who is left handed thinks differntly than a right handed person does, simply because of the correlation of the mind. Using your left side primarily for the majority of your life is quite different than being able to switch your feet. To deal with a southpaw in a orthodox lead hooks nand make sure your lead foot is on the outside theirs. One last thing be calm and unlearn see different angles.
