Dropped By a 5 year old!!!!!
kotegashiNeo replied to Ryukyu1's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Great story, too funny but what was the instructor thinking, teaching karate to a 5 year has nothing to do with striking vital areas. What was the next drill shuto to the throat. In my opinion it should been the instructor removed from class and forced to a million push-ups but then again he'd suffered enough -
Have any one of u guys use karate in a fight situations etc.
kotegashiNeo replied to Practice is the key _'s topic in Karate
I have used my martial skills on several occassions. I was working at a night club as a bouncer and I asked a patron to leave he said he wasn't going to in the most unplesant fashion imagineable. I used the deep breathing from sanchin kata to remain calm and escorted the gentleman from the building without incident. I don't think that is the type of story that you are looking but it is the best example of me using karate I can think of. If you wanted combat stories that is something else alltogether and I don't refer to it as karate. -
I can only talk about Goju because I am unqualified to talk anything else athough I have trained in other styles of karate I cannot speak intelligently about them as I am not an expect. With that in mind I believe the purpose of this thread is to discuss how complete each style of karate is. I truly belive that Okinawian goju is a complete system. To give an example to support my claim, In seiunchin kata there is a neck break bunkai against a double leg take down plus many arm break bunkai as well. as well as stikes from different ranges and angles.

Wow it turned into a vs thread suprise! Well I enjoy my mental faculties as the are now. After doing kickboxing for six years and suffering many grade 1,2 and 3 concussions. I think prefer a little less brain rattling. Yes you do need to know how your body reacts to getting walloped by round kick to the leg or head but also you want to have a long and healthy martial arts carrier. For you full contact guys how full contact are we talking ? throat chops, eye gouge, bitting, now that is full contact

Comparing these styles: Shotokan, Shorin-Ryu and Goju
kotegashiNeo replied to krunchyfrogg's topic in Karate
Goju is an in close fighting system with elbow and knees strikes. Heavily influnced by white crane kempo and monk fist boxing. It adds a soft element not found in shotokan yeilding when faced with force. If you find yourself doing mawashi uke in sanchin dachi that is goju ryu. I am curious about why your system has chosen combine these three as each one is a complete style in its own right. -
Interesting I can't imagine throwing a spinning back kick from zenkustsu dachi at all. It is stance designed for punching or creating leg strength by kicking from it. I tend to throw it from neko ashi dachi then landing in sheiko dachi. Can you get any speed doing it the second way it just seems like that leg is in the air for way too long. Not trashing your thread I actuallt gave it a try your way it just didn't feel right

Easy to Sweep a Karateka?
kotegashiNeo replied to Rich_2k3's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That is interesting have you tried that against any judoka your stance that is. Oh and which karate stance were you talking about was there one in particular or were you referring to all of them. I am just curious did you include natural stance, you know the stance most judoka randori in. -
Easy to Sweep a Karateka?
kotegashiNeo replied to Rich_2k3's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well what style of karate? All styles, because as everyone knows especially Kung fu teachers that all styles of karate are the same wiether it be shotokan or goju ryu it doesn't matter. It just seems silly to make a really broad statment like that from someone who doesn't know karate. Maybe I'm just odd -
Seiunchin done slow and correctly is like poetry I never get tired of mentally doing the bunkai while performing the kata. It really gives you a mental edge. Kata does a body good !

Stuey-san I admire your vigor I truly do but after only 18 months of trainning taking a break would be the furthest from my mind too but try a decade or in the case of some people 2 or 3 and it is an entirely different story. Everyone has pointed out that life happens while your busy making other plans. Miyagi sensei said loyalty should come in this order, Family, Work then Karate.

Southpaws !!!!!
kotegashiNeo replied to Ozaru's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Again being a southpaw has nothing to do with switching your feet. Just because your right foot is in front doesn't make you a southpaw. It has to do with natural co-ordination, If you train to be able to fight on both sides that doesn't make you left handed or does it, The way everyone talks about switching stances you would think it does. Empty your cup -
is it posibel to fail a grading
kotegashiNeo replied to hell burner's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
In my school you have to know the cirriculum or you will not pass. You are resposible for but if you are not sure take a private class to brush up -
I prefer tie elastic can drop over the course of an evening especially if you grapple
-
Look someone who takes a break from trainning doesn't forget all the kata they'd learned, so to start all over is silly. However extensive trainning may be required to regain their former skill level and maybe re-test
-
I hate to say this but I believe in the value of the martial arts and the benefits it can have on anyone and the thought of a super skilled sensei having shut down his school because he didn't want to be sucsessful. I think martial art teachers are real heros and should be paid accordingly. that is just me. If people will pay that much for martial arts instruction then they view it as worth it.

Try this goju exersise lift only your big toe then put it down then lift the remaining toes without distubing your big toe

most brutal naha shishoshin
-
For me it was Saifa because it has counter grappling techniques in it. Up until that point I thought Kata was just a necessary evil to get my shodan but since then my whole view on karate and it's practicality has changed

Hey aes no one likes getting hit in the face that why their are blocks in martial arts. So don't listen to anyone else, protect your teeth don't risk them for hardcore trainning that will just shorten the total length of your martial trainning. The mask you wear is great I have extensive full contact kickboxing trainning with the exact piece of equipment. That blind spot is awesome for several reasons, first it develops jaw strength from all the roundhouse kicks you are going to eat. Second it develops that sixth sense every martial artist wants you begin to feel a technique before it comes. Lastly when you take it off scoring on you will be more difficult because you are used to having your vison restricted

Shotokan always seemed like it missed the JU but it sure has the GO. Don't know much about wado ryu though
