  1. There have been a lot of new female members since this was last up. So does anyone wish to say hi? :pony:
  2. Dee I am a 45 year old girl who loves the martial arts. I am also 2nd dan. I think there is a thread around this forum somewhere for females to introduce themselves to each other. And we have a lot more female members than we used to. And a lot of active ones. So I am off to do a search. And don't let anyone put you or your efforts down. A great part of living a satisfying life is doing the best at whatever it is that you try to do.
  3. Okay does anyone else find it confusing to try and figure out what grade some one is in when they are in a different country? Well I do. I would really love to know how the British forms compare to our american grades. We start kindergarten age 5 elementary school grades 1-4 are usually 6-9or 10 year olds Middle school: grades 5-6, are usually 10-12 year olds. Junior high grades 7-9 are usually 12-15 year olds. High school is grades 10-12. Age varires with grades as to when the birthday occurs. And some school systems are different and go 1-8 in one school then high school.
  4. We went through a change over in systems and had to learn new versions of five katas. Three more had changes later on. Our breaking require ments changed too. Made 2nd dan requirements ambidextrous.
  5. Tiger are you sure you are only 15?
  6. At least I have a sense of humor. When I was in high school being 4 year varsity kind of drowned out the more nerdy part. I sort of lived in 2 worlds. Not everyone has the imagination for rpgs that aren;t displayed on a screen. But back then gaming technology was still evolving as pong.
  7. Radok MS is multiple sclerosis a neuromuscular disease. I train katas and kihons, elliptical crosstraining aerobic machine, lift weights and work out with my wavemaster. My sparring partner just moved out of the state.
  8. Hey I resent the nerd crack Okay it is true that originally most of the players were of the highly intelligent variety considered nerdly by their less gifted counterparts. But since then rpg's have gone much more mainstream; especially after the advent of Magic the gathering.
  9. I have studied Japanese/Okinawan styles of karate and at different times in my training I have been impressed by different things. At first it was the way things were presented in steps so that you learned and succeeded at one skill at a time each building on the other. Currently what I appreciate most about Shotokan is the wide availability of information available on the internet and peoples willingness to share.
  10. Welcome to the forum We seem to have just gotten a new influx of more female students. :pony: A good thing.
  11. So welcome to KarateForums. The more you visit here the more you see how this site feels different than many of the others.
  12. KarateKid actually everyone is supposed to move at once on the commands. But come time to stand up there are some of us who are slower that others.
  13. Welcome to the forum. So what do you work with in kobudo?
  14. I like the idea of avatars. Some sites with them load really slowly however.
  15. Guys and girls I have to admit it - I am definately in a mental slump. After my last test and submitting my chapter to a book project I took some time off. Then between having trouble with the heat, a nasty case of thrush, and sinus infections I seem to have lost a bit of motivation somewher. Suggestions.
  16. I have to agree with G95 the most effective weapon lies between our ears. If we cannot use that one effectively no other weapon is going to do us much good.
  17. No Tobias I have never had a chance to handle one. We have a rather odd way of weapons grading in that each of the four weapons (bo, sai, tonfa and nunchaku) have their own belt rank.
  18. We do a formal beginning and ending to class. Everyone lines up in order of rank from left to right. Dai sempai (senior student) in first positon in line up. Senior student gives the command to sit down. Then seated meditaiton. Then a kiai then a command to shomen ni rei everyone bows to the front of the room as a sign they are happy to have a nice place to train (after a filthy basement some of us trained in we really appreciate a nice place to train) and stays down until sensei has a chance to turn around and senior student kiais. Then sensei ni rei everyonebows to sensei as a sign of respect and that I am here and ready to learn you stay down until sensei kiaias and everyone sits up at once and class begins. We are pretty traditional.
  19. Cho un no Kon is pretty cool. It is different from the other katas. I did Cho un for my brown belt kobudo grading. We do Sakagawa no kon for our black belt bo grading. It is really different doing moves from the kneeling positon in Cho un.
  20. I tend to have a slightly different hand position. I hold the lead hand about forehead level. I have a blind spot and that helps keep me from walking into my opponensts hand pads. The other hand is about chest level. And i try to keep my elbows tucked in.
  21. No not a show, the original fantasy role playing game. You choose a character type and develope the character in the course of the game play. It is sort of a board game played on a grid. The course of the dungeon is stocked with monsters and adventures based on the roll of di. There are lots of nice probability charts and things that affect the course of play. It takes good imagination and visual imagery skills. This is a game you play in your head and share your fantasy with a group of other players.
  22. My favorite weapons katas are Sakagawa no Kon and Tsukenshita Haku no Sai.
  23. There is a nice long thread on favorite katas in the karate section. The link is http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=66&forum=13&start=90&100 _________________ Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-07-09 16:29 ] [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-07-09 16:35 ]
  24. This has nothing to do with katas, favorite or otherwise, but since someone brought up the habits of female religous a have a historical note. The habits of Catholic Religous orders usually have some relation to what was generally worn at the time of the orders founding and have carried down through the centuries. I cannot think of the name of the head piece that covers the sides of the head and the throat but that was a commonly worn item of clothing at one time in history. Now there is a favorite kata thread just started in general martial arts so I need to try to link it to this one.
