  1. This is a problem that does happend from time to time. And I think it happens more often than people want to admit. I have seen the same problems mentioned in other places. And from what I have seen the general consenses is to go barefoot more often and let the feet toughen up that way. Some also recomend wearing shoes in the meantime until the feet heal sufficently to start over again. the link to this topic here is: http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=662&forum=19&start=15&24 _________________ Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-06-15 14:34 ]
  2. Well this was kind of in the wrong place so I moved it to health and fitness. And since it is a double post this one is now closed.
  3. I have often thought about why I am still doing this and should I continue. I think it all comes down ultimately to the reason we are training. If it is for advancement in rank only there will be a time that stopping is the only thing that makes sense. If we are training because we are addicted is a different because the advancement in rank doesn't matter. If we train for personal satisfaction then advancement does not matter. And with the ever increasing spectrum of students involved with more females and more older students the arts will evolve to accomadate the older students. (okay I admit I just turned 45) Utimately it all comes down to why we train in the first place.
  4. We went out for pizza after one test where black belts were awarded. Hey, we are Americans after all. But for the most parts the belts are always awarded after test.
  5. Congratulations. Is a forgetting a load of blocks anything like a brain fart?
  6. Please don't remind me about tear gas. The army teaches you how nice you gas mask works by having you put it on and enter a gas chamber. There your group must walk around in a circle and then remove the mask. You must continue walking until everyone is choking real good. Theory being that will teach you to trust your mask.
  7. Check through the health and fitness area here. There are several threads on stretching and some links to sites that have a lot of info on stretching.
  8. For a healthy person three months to work up to a three mile run should be no problem at all. In fact there are many who sincerely believe that running should be a regular part of their training program. During the hot months coming ahead run early in the day. And make sure you pracatice your forms and any sort of skills that will be asked for.

  10. My first class in shorin ryu I was in with some greenbelts. And things went so fast. I learned the basic blocks and drills and started kata the first night. I remember thinking I hope I remember all of this. I had to switch schools later and went into a class with students who had no experience at all and things went a lot slower. At that point I was thinking "I need to do everything to the best of my ability".
  11. You know Kickchick I think that with us much of what goes on becomes more of a mental battle than a physical thing. Sure there is the physical side - and it is a big part. But the mental state has so much more to do with things every year. I was out of any kind of training for a year with bilateral rotator cuff tears. When I started over (and I mean over - I couldn't even get dressed by myself) the biggest part of the battle was mental. I am aware that there are some shotokan groups who are starting to do more work in the area of training after 40. I haven't seen that kind of discussion in any other style yet. You are not the only one thinking in that area. My first tests I was worried about what happens if I fall in the middle of everything. The last tests my big worry was gosh I hope I don't go blank. As more people continue to train longer and start training at later ages there will be more changes made.
  12. Your fingers heal that slowly? Get a bucket of sand and toughen up.
  13. Think back to your first class (doesn't matter if it was yesterday or 30 years ago). What do you most remember? If you were the instructor what would you have done differently?
  14. I kind of think that some of the old topics remain relevent. And, as new members to this forum are constantly coming in maybe they would like to see them too.
  15. OOPS to bad van_damme. I just got the AOE 2 disk. Haven't had time to play with it much yet though.
  16. There has been something going around sending multiple emails. So far I have been lucky. But then I have not put my address book in the computer. There is also a thing going around saying that a certain file that is actually part of the windows operating system is a virus that is not. Again.
  17. Has anyone had any experience using things like a CamelBack for longer outings say on the bike or hiking?
  18. Another way to maximise the work load is to do things like jumping jacks between sets. That will keep the heart rate up and add to the cardio benefit.
  19. Go lighter with the weight Jack.
  20. I can remember a time about 25-30 years ago when my Mom bought my Grandma a thing of mace. It was never used. Fortunately. A while back someone asked me if I had ever thought about carrying it. My view is that I would be highly likely to drop it at the wrong time and would wind up being the one to get sprayed.
  21. Sounds like a lot of good advice and good planning is going on. We have always had the highest number of new students right after school starts; and the lowest enrollment in the summer.
  22. Bet it will stick with you too KSN Doug. Do you think it is better to have specific role models or inspirations or just a general drive to learn a martial art?
  23. Blade I too thought this might be better suited for the weapons area, but after reading through I kind of like Bon's reasoning for placing it here. So for the time being I choose to leave it here and if someone else disagrees they can move it later. You know it is kind of odd that no one has asked this question before.
  24. With the rise in "air rage", even before 9/11 there was a need for some type of regular training for flight attendants. I strongly agree with those who said just a few classes in not sufficent. I think that need is for an ongoing program.
