  1. Hey guess what? Red was the first belt after white for me too. Those first tests can be scary particularly in front of a large group.
  2. First I moved this post to health and fitness because it better fits here. Second the binge/purge cycle is not good for anyone. 103 pounds at 155cm erumm about 5'2" is not fat for someone with muscle tone. My sister of the same height wore size 1 and 3 clothers at 98 pounds. Definately not fat.
  3. Blade if I were you I would definately not advertise the fact that I have explosives. That could get you in a lot of trouble in these days.
  4. Congratulations.
  5. Actually there is a head butt in karate. I don't know the term for it. The show-off type break some do with their head is a real thing. There is a spot on the front of the cranium where the bone is thicker than it is elsewhere. It is really a purely self defense type of technique.
  6. Hey karateMom good luck to you .
  7. Where do I feel rooted in front stance is an intriguing question. I have a totally different answer than I did during my earlier years of training. I don't think it is really my feet or legs that are grounded in front stance. I think that it is my hips that are grounded. Movement forward or backward is powered by the hips. Kicks are powered by the hips. I think my root is the hips and my feet and legs just connect me to the ground. That may generate some interesting replies what does everyone else think?
  8. There was a time (not that many years ago) when I had a really horrible neighbor. I used to fantasize about meeting him outside and beating the living cr*p out of him. Funny thing was when someone told me had died not long ago I felt kind of strange about it. At one time that news would have caused me to feel like having a party. Now I just feel a bit hollow inside about it. Kind of strange huh?
  9. Guess I wan't seeing things after all. You will find this to be an interesting group. And in time you to will meet and learn to appreciate our KickChick. So KickinCroft welcome to the forum. :pony:
  10. Front leg doesn't root in cat stance. With the rear leg bent just right the the center of the body is almost totally over the rear foot. Impossible to root the front leg. The front leg gets used more like a "probe".
  11. And you know the funny thing was when I relax my feet I seem to have better traction on the floor for some reason. Like maybe I have more surface contact. And I realize it is a very un-karatelike thing to say don't grip the ground.
  12. XP you are a taurus born on the cusp of gemini.
  13. KarateMom you are more than well on your way to being the coolest mom in the neighborhood.
  14. Yes KickChick it is funny how things change. My sisters oldest is now living alone and borrowing her car on occasional weekends. And although she wrecked one of my cars one time he has not yet had a problem with hers.
  15. Have I been hit with a brain? Well many times in sparring I have been hit by a brain attached to the hands and feet of my opponent. And it takes the participaiton of the braind to ingrain and groove a reflex.
  16. I would have to qualify that with for only those with proper training who practice on a regular basis at a shooting range. For the avereage unitiated and untrained person they can be a recipe for disaster.
  17. I also practice my kobudo skills the same way. I move forward and backwards and work on turns to both sides. Then I work the techniques from both sides of the body. Then do combinations from both sides.
  18. There are many ways to hide and disguise kicks. Cat stance is just one. For those who work with it the stance becomes a highly moblile one.

    Knuckles

Hold your arm straight out in front of you hand in a good fist. Now look at how your knuckles line up with the bones in the forearm. At full or near full extension the contact point of the first two knuckles line up with the bones in the arm thus making the punch solid and much stronger. That is if you turn your fist over so that you are making contact with your palm to the floor. If you don't rotate your fist things are different.
  20. How is your school handling the accident? Do they have a policy or do they handle things on a case by case basis? I think at some point we all have to come to grips with the idea that there is some risk in what we do. Dumbest thing I ever did was to myself. Back when I started working on the crescent kick in heian godan. I broke a finger gettig a bit to aggressive with the kick into the open hand.
  21. Yes Pacificshore that is more of what I was looking for. I am noticing more and more that if I relax my feet more like I am standing in sand and just sort of sink my stances are much stonger (not to mention lower). It is a totally different feeling. And the blocks, punches and kicks seem to explode much more.
  22. Didn't know it was possible to know everything.
  23. Gripping the ground with the toes isn't exactly what I was looking for.
  24. Congratulations to you Patrick and to all others graduating this year. My niece finished a few months ago and is working until she starts college (on a scholarship) in the fall.
