  1. Sounds like something your physio would best be able to answer. A lot will depend on your rehab and wether or not you don't force it too far too fast and cause long term problems.
  2. Many styles add introductory kata that are not traditonally part of their styles cirriculum. Actually the beginning I described is know by 5 or 6 different names. It is practiced by many styles.

  8. Could have sworn that there was allready a thread on this topic and I looked and couldn't find it. So anyway I have 2 screen names. When I am in cat chat I am Sshadowsmom. My cat is named Shadow and when I first got on the internet someone allready had Shadowsmom so I added an extra s in the front. You see my beloved cat has this habit of expressing herself with hisses instead of meows. She rarely meows. Just hisses and purrs. My martial arts screen name came from my favorite weapon + fights + the disease that has been part of my life for way too long.

  14. Errrr uhhhhm if you need chest protection while working with the nunchaku you are very definately working with your elbow way too close to your body.
  15. To some frayed colorless well worn black belts are a great source of pride. I think a lot of the attitutude one has on wether or not a worn belt should be replaced depends on how their school talks about them. My 1st kyu belt was getting pretty ratty when I got my black one.
  16. I think everyone should be respected until they prove otherwise. When I was in the militairy I had many thoughts on this topic. There is more than one way to respect someone or some thing. You can respect a rank, person, uniform, flag, accomlishment... I think the highest form of respect we can have is the respect we have for someone who has genuinely earned it. Unfortunately there are those who have to be respected because of rank, title, or positon who really do not deserve respect as a person. Just my opinion.
  17. OldRookie have to admit I really enjoyed the Tom Clancy books I have read my favorites were Executive order and Rainbow 6. Unfortunately I was reading a Clancy book on 9-11 and then the guy shows up in an interview and well... i am kind of off that track for a while.
  18. Not necessarily. Many schools take longer than the time you state. And remember that belt orders vary from school to school even in the same styles. Some feel that if it doesn't take at least 6 or 7 years to attain black belt the school isn't tough enough and teaches watered down mcdojo quality material.
  19. Try using deceleration loops to the side or over head to slow them down and regain control before recatching. It is a valid and traditional way to maintain control.
  20. Another idea that saves swatting your own head is to look at where your arm is positioned in the final and the beginning state. Now at no point in the swing should the elbow be bent any more than that. When the elbow is bent more the nunchaku is going to be closer in to your body. Make any sense? The other thing is are you moving your elbow in closer to your body? When you bring the elbow in on that particular move you are bringing the nunchaku closer to your head. And it never hurts to practice privately in your helmet. I have.
  21. Taikudo-ka looking at a calender the other day I realized it has now been 25 years. In the early days we were told "don't get tired, don't get hot, don't do this, don't do that". There are a lot of ups and downs. And it seems I had an unusual course of the disease in the extremely rapid rate of progression in the first 3 years. There are a few of us who managed to stay uninstitutionalized. And found to our amazement as we hit middle age we are improving with effort. I do very much credit my martial arts trai aning with much of my gain in physical ability. All those trips back and forth across the floor in zenkutsu dachi were a wonderfull physical therapy. The longer wider step was so much easier to stay balanaced in. And the stance made my legs work hard and pick up strength. My journey through the kyu grades was really a journey of discovery and accomplishment. I did much of my training on scholarship. I was a sort of experiment for my sensei's. Now I find that I am thouroughly addicted to the martial arts. And I would give them up for nothing. As for doing things when - an important thing to learn is how to listen to what your body is telling you. I was taught visualization and meditation techniques in pain management. Later I learned how to use those techniques to listen to my inner physical body. There are days when physical activity would be extremely detrimental and days when gains are easy to make. Everyone has a different course.
  22. My favorite workout involves practicing kata at varying speeds. Then picking it apart and working on pieces. Then putting it back together.
