Glossary of Martial Arts terms
SaiFightsMS replied to Bitseach's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I lost my 300 term glossary when the hard drive had to be wiped last winter. -
I have seen many discussions on wether or not the belt should be washed. Some get rather heated, some get more than a bit silly. Does your school have a policy on the wearing of repulsively odiferous belts? Do you have personel, strong or other wise, opinions on this topic.

Okay I tried to link a new thread to this and it didn't work. So here is what was said before about the one inch punch.

This topic has come up before. The link to the old thread is http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=872&forum=2 _________________ Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-06-20 16:41 ]

One of the great things about having your own puching bag sitting (or hanging) around is all the walk by punches and kicks that get thrown. I mean it is hard to resist taking a shot at it everytime you pass by.

I don't know what anyone else thinks of Austin Powers but I came across a link to an Austin Powers website. After you get there one of the things you can do is find out what your "60" spy name is. Mine came out Defiant. Http://www.austinpowers.com

I have one sitting here in my living room and personally I like it. There is no convenient way for many of us apartment dwellers to hang a heavy bag from the ceiling. It really isn;t hard to move around. And if I want my place to look a bit more like someone of my age actually does live here it nicely slides into a corner and makes a great coat rack. All kidding aside the way I have my living room set up I can move the desk chair and have an area with adequat size to work with it in. I enjoy chasing it across the room. Only real problem is sometimes i get ready to start bangin away on it and then realize that my neighbors are asleep because it is 3:00 am; and they are not nocturnal creatures like I am. I have a corner with my "toys" in it that are all ready to be pulled out into the middle of the room when I want to play with them. I have a nice stationary bike, weight bench and fitness ball. As you can well imagine sometimes when someone comes in for the first time the place gets rather strange looks but this is my place and I can set it up anyway I want to. And watchout as you come in the door I have a tension rod hanging inside the door where every thing from wet cloths to targets get hung on a regular basis. But back to the topic I have been beating on my wavemaster for 2 years with no problems. That is just my use no one else plays with it.

You know the way that your heels rise off the surface of the skis on cross country? Well on the elliptical and the end of the stride the heel should be rising there too; it keeps the circulation going in the feet largely eliminating unpleasant tingly sensations. I also find it much easier to read on the elliptical than on the treadmill.

It all depends on the level of the student. All of our early blocks were done with closed hands to minimize the danger of breaking fingers. Later techniques with open hand are learned after the student has a few years behind them and has reached a higher level of proficeincy in terms of learning how to judge distance, speed of an incoming attack and amount of force use.

Ah, the advantages of training in shoes.

Do Furbies count as pets? I got one a few years ago thinking Shadow might get a bit of entertainment out of it chattering and wiggling its ears at her. Instead she is a bit jealous of it. The first time she stuck her nose up in front of its light sensor and it responded to her it scared my poor cat. I have one furry chicken.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you will be interesting to talk to.

I might get lost in a time warp if I went. You see I remember watching Scooby on saturday mornings during its first run.

At the end of WW2 there were was a great demand for martial arts instruction in Japan and Okinawa and not enough qualified teachers. So there would be those who would take classes in the daytime and then go teach their students in the evening what they had learned earlier. So you see the McDojo concept is not a new one. Just another 2 cents worth.

I came across a link to this interview and thought it was interesting. http://www.shotokanworld.com/abe.htm Do you find it interesting to look at the changes that have that have occured over time in the martial arts? Or how about do you think what has gone on before will affect the changes that we see in our lifetime in our chosen art? Allright I cannot get that link to work so go to http://www.shotokanworld.com and go to the interview from the homepage. Sorry I am just not very good at posting links all the time. _________________ Shotokan Karate, bo, sai Karate means a better life [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-06-16 18:26 ] [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-06-16 18:30 ]

As I was finishing my work on the elliptical training machine today it was getting close to time for the gym to close. So I am trying to figure out how long can I stay on the machine and still be able to safely walk down stairs from the third floor. By varying the ramp angle and swithching back and forth between forwards and backwards pedaling motions I find that I get a really good leg workout on the transport. (the brand of our machines efx transport) So does anyone else work with an elliptical trainer? I really like them.

Most of the time our testing procedure starts three months before the final testing. There is a prelimenary test then. A written test is also required before final permission to test is given. Then there is another formal check two to three weeks before test day.

You would not believe some of the suggestions I have seen other places to deal with this problem. Everything from "brineing" the feet to elaborate taping schemes. Whatever you do in the meantime do not apply weird substances to the feet be it vinegar, saline, turpentine, urine (yes this came up somewhere) ---- get the idea. One idea that did sound good was to wear flip flops or sandals on the way to class to give the feet time to dry out good before class.
-
Well I suppose you could fill the gouge in with wood filler, let it dry and then sand down. But then you have to restain them.
-
Well it takes a lot to break a pair of wooden nunchaku. It took a 250 pound, or 113 kilo, power chair running over them to break the only pair of nunchaku I have ever seen break. If you plan on using your nunchaku in situations that you think are likely to break them it is best to use a pair made out of the hardest wood you can get hold of. Or try aluminum or graphite.

Iron Palm
SaiFightsMS replied to Haru's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I have to admit that I know nothing about iron palm training. But, I would like to learn a bit about it. Does anyone here have any experience or a source of information? -
Okay so editing an old topic doesn't move it to the top it takes a new reply so now it will move up. Hey it's a learning process.
