How many fights have you been in?
WolverineGuy replied to dissolved's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've only been in a couple actual fights...those were all in junior high. Since I've gotten my black belt, I've talked a few people down from trying to pummel me. -
AND I'M GOIN CRAZY!!!! AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! ...ok, I feel better.

Will do! -
Actually, that's not true. Steroid users still need to diet and watch overtraining. Steroids simply allow for faster gains...it doesn't allow for sloppy training, or too MUCH training. Muscles don't grow when you work out, they grow when you rest.

Oh my! I completely missed that! Thank you so much! He had a rather traumatic day today...they tried to draw blood, but he is not a bleeder, so it turned into 20 minutes of him proving to everyone that he can cry louder than any other baby. Poor kid. -

You must suck. Seriously, size and strength DO make a difference, no matter what. However, when you're THAT skilled...the other guy needs to be about 10 feet tall and weigh 800 lbs. -
Here is an excellent article on the subject. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101841 this was taken from http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/30lies.htm Although there is some evidence to suggest that high repetitions might induce some extra capillary intrusion into a muscle, they will do nothing to make the muscle harder or more cut up. If a completely sedentary person began weightlifting, using either low reps or high reps, he or she would experience a rapid increase in tonus, the degree of muscular contraction that the muscle maintains even when that muscle is relaxed, but that would happen regardless of rep range. The only way that high repetitions would make a muscle more cut up is if, by doing a higher number of reps, your body as a whole was in negative energy balance, and you were burning more calories than you were ingesting. The truth is, heavy weights, lifted for 5-8 reps per set, can build rock-hard muscles. You just have to get the fat off them to see how "hard" they are.

the link is http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=198858&perpage=30&pagenumber=1 As for the size and strength issue, that certainly comes into play, and can definitely provide the edge in an otherwise even fight. -

My humble opinion: PRO WRESTLING!!! jk in no particular order: Muay Thai BJJ Judo Arnis Krav Maga -
I've never really been big on any type of motion that puts that kind of impact on the knees. Take it from someone with joint problems. If you must do it, find a soft surface like karatekid said.

Bushido is the way of the warrior. It is a code of honor followed by the samurai. That's the very short answer.

The only thing that tones is cardio and diet...period. The truth is, higher reps will NOT tone your muscles or make them more defined. Once again, this is having a low body fat %. Higher reps will work on endurance though and is great for some athletes and marathon runners.

Is JKD too complicated?
WolverineGuy replied to cymry's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I hear ya. I'm not one to jump on the flame bandwagon, but his last post was just ignorant. There are two schools of thought on jkd, not two schools left of jkd. JKD is very much alive and "kicking." EDIT: Sorry for the typos earlier, I was typing whilst holding my newborn. -
I really don't drink all that often...not opposed to the occasional frosty adult beverage, but I don't make it a habit. No reason to, really

Its not always that easy.

Crisps = Potato chips...mmmm...*drool* My diet, when I can afford the time and groceries, is fairly strict: Breakfast = oatmeal and a banana...perhaps an apple. Snack: Can of tuna Lunch: Lean meat sandwich, no mayo, but with spicy mustard. Sometimes I just go with a chicken caesar salad. Snack: Yogurt! Dinner: This is always the one that kills the wallet, but its the biggest meal I eat. So, at least a 10 oz steak, if not 16. Baked potato, and a vegetable as sides. Lowfat sour cream and salsa on the potato...surprisingly really good. Snack: PB&J on whole grain bread Throughout the day, I supplement with 12 oz protien shakes. I also take a multivitamin, flax seed oil (for those omega 3 fatty acids...the GOOD kind of fats), and an amino acid supplement in pill form. At the end of the day, ZMA, which brings your testosterone levels back up naturally (not a prohormone or steroid...just a replenisher of what you have already used if you workout). Mind you, anything meat I eat is interchangable with chicken breast, tuna, salmon, steak, and turkey, but the best are steak, salmon, and chicken. You can't go too crazy on the tuna due to the mercury content. What to drink? Water! That's the best thing you can drink ever. As for what I eat right now...sadly, I just don't have the time or discipline to work out and eat right, so as I type this, I'm eating KFC. Ah, the irony. But a new baby kinda throws you for a loop on what your routine is. I'm hoping by next week to be back to pumping the iron and eating healthy. For now, I'm eating convenient. Tonight will more than likely mark my return to training MA as well, since I haven't been there in two months, again, preparing for the arrival of my newborn. Hope that offered someone some inspiration.

Building muscle mass is going to require compound movements...for the chest specifically, its any kind of pressing motion. To build a significant amount of mass, you're going to have to get on the bench press...also dips are good (http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/PectoralSternal/AsChestDip.html has assisted chest dips, just don't use the assistance for added difficulty). What I do for mass in the pectoralis major are: 1x10 dumbell press, superset with 1x10 dumbell flye to warm the muscle up 3x10 incline bench press 3x10 flat bench 3x10 pec dips If I need to do a last burnout set, I go to a light dumbell flye to isolate the pectoralis major. Also, to build mass, you need to be eating a lot of healthy calories. Protiens, whole grain carbs, and low fat foods are essential, especially the protien. Hope that helps.
