  1. I personally try to get them into my guard, then work into a sweep over into the mount. This isn't always the best strategy, but its usually the easiest for me.

  3. *L* Hence the word PRACTICALLY. And I'm sure there are several 170 lbs brazillians named Royce that he could hold his own against...just not that one in particular.
  4. I'm fairly sure that Shamrock could hold his own against practically anyone. Shootfighting has a great blend of striking and grappling...doesn't make you an expert in either, but it does give you a backup when one fails.
  5. Finally figured out what it was, just never referred to it as such. *sigh* Not up on the lingo am I. (in best yoda voice)
  6. In theory, that sounds good, but your opponent will be able to "base out" with their arms/elbows and block it...essentially with you giving your back up.
  7. Now what the heck was that for? Aikido is a wonderfully effective martial art; just takes a while to learn. Judo is fabulous too...I'm acutally considering taking Judo to improve my stand up grappling game.
  8. I agree, the elbow escape is probably the best defense...just make sure to get enough space!
  9. Soreness doesn't necessarily mean that you have damaged something, although it is a good indicator that you may want to take it easy. I pulled a muscle a few days ago from a straddle stretch that I pushed a little too much...healing slowly but surely.

  11. heh...that's a beautiful thing. I think my favorite story where a martial artist got attacked was when the guys tried to carjack the judo club...the Daily Show spent a nice amount of time spoofing it, with a graphic entitled "Enter the Wagon" Jon Stewart made sure to emphasize that judo meant "The Gentle Way" immediately after listing the guys injuries. good stuff.
  12. Eh, I'm always training at home when I'm not at the dojo, but chances are, family obligations will kill that on Sunday...

  14. I get about 3-6 hours a week in the dojo, 3 hours of weights, and a buttload of whenever I can misc. training.
  15. What in the world are you talking about? WWE finishers are about LOOKS, not about technique. The actual technique is the person that is getting the move applied to them, and not getting hurt (ah, the judoka must love it). And a SWANTON bomb is easy...for someone that has gymnastics background. For the rest of us (myself included), its not exactly in the cards. At any rate, its all about the looks.
  16. UGH! Sadly, everything I've seen points to quite a few months of recovery/rehabilitation. Anything involving the menisucs is VERY touchy. My girlfriend has a degeneration of the meniscus, which makes her training difficult, but not impossible. Hopefully, you have a speedy recovery, but DON'T PUSH IT!!!
  17. Hey, guys, remember the whole keeping respectful thing. BJJ has its holes in it, just like EVERY SINGLE MARTIAL ART. I've got fifteen years in spanning three martial arts...in my final art that I'm in now, I've found the most complete style for ME, and that's all that matters to me. Are there Martial Artists that could beat me in a fight? Probably...in fact I welcome it. I love learning new things, and that's one of the reasons I do this. Now, quit the childish bickering, and lets act our age.
  18. As a general rule, I like to go with things that are very well rounded...harder to get bored that way. Especially since I'm a good kicker and enjoy grappling.

  21. When I talk about conditioning, I'm talking training your endurance (or stamina). Running, getting on an eliptical machine/treadmill, or sparring abnormal amounts of time to train yourself to last longer.
  22. For me, the mental is all about sticking through your goals...there are times in your training that you just want to give up because, let's face it, its difficult. But to have the drive, determination, and focus to stick it out and SUCCEED! THAT is true mental toughness.
