Yes, a shame he has retired from competition, although he does insist in full contact kumite as part of his own training regime.

Title isn't perfect, but who out there today do you admire/aspire to/enjoy to watch/would love to train under. For me it's Andre Bertel http://andrebertel.blogspot.co.nz/ And getting more interested in Rick Hotton also.

Had a look at their website, thanks JR. I'm not sure which model would suit best, I prefer 12 oz for sure. like a snappy one at any rate. Which model would you recommend???? Prices seem fine to me. I'll let you know my movements closer to January, Virginia for sure and hopefully Long Is. If so a date at Honbu is definitely on the cards!!
-
The Ronin 12 oz, how did it hold up BTW?? I'm thinking of picking up a higher end Gi in January when I'm over that way. A general purpose type gi, not worried about "tournament" or "Kumite" styles.

We call this a Glasgow kiss over here. It seems popular in UK gangster type movies, remember on in a UB40 music/short story film. I'm assuming forehead to nose is the main target....any others? Maybe a reverse one to distract while getting out of a bearhug type deal?

I believe his "innocence" is all part of his marketing strategy, sorry I'm old and cynical....... Still fun to watch tho!!

Welcome Catlike, didn't even see you lurking, so you picked a good handle......

My favourite fighter Mark Hunt will be fighting Lesnar (Ex WWE) , going to interesting to watch Hunt the striker tackle a ground fighter like Lesnar, especially with the size difference. Anyone else got some favourite fighters at UFC200? I'm interested in watching Northcutt (You know sir, I'm only 19), can't say I like the guy TBH, I know he is young so I guess that's where his cockyness come from. He is an athletic tho no doubt.

I have never hosted one, but been to a few. Only advice I can give based on the ones I have seen, be careful to match up equal fighters. Bad for everyone when there are mis-matched fights.

Good on you LLLearner! -
Try it in a swimming pool first, also are you doing it on mats??? Get some assistance to "tip" you over that last part of the movement.

Congratulations to you. I have just graded together with my 10 yr old daughter, we both recognize the bond that we share, it's the best thing in my life, sharing this passion with her.

OMG!!!!!!! I imagine her husband has a hearing problem......

Interesting read. In my neck of the woods (South Pacific) there are many tribal dances throughout the pacific islands that do a similar thing with the female hips. They seem to be isolated from the rest of the torso , with the grass shirt accentuating the movement. Seems to be that they have great control over the hip movements. See here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abqjRWfddwo for a slow version where you can see the movements better.

Welcome Gunner. Good to see you posting!

Sounds like they are mis-informed of what bowing actually means. One would assume they won't shake hands either or address older people as "sir" or "madam" either. If they cannot accept that there are no religious conatations (sp) to the act of bowing in this situation then I would send them home, no matter how good a student they may be. What might happen when they get to a kata like Pinan/Heinan (Peace and harmony), or some other kata that may be mis-construed as being "against their beliefs". Meditation would also likely be a big hurdle in the case. Perhaps a chat with a senior member that has a solid religious background might resolve things..... It would be a shame to lose such diligent students over a mis-conception...

This is what is sadly lacking in many, many gyms and dojos around the world. Just part of the human condition, egos............ Training simply for the love of training and knowledge gained with no belts? Great concept! Bigger organizations probably use the belt system as part of the "organization" of their style. As sensei8 says, there is no wrong or right way, just what works for you. -
That's the way to think of it JR, no matter what happens , I'm sure that you will enjoy yourself! Pics when you can (PM if you prefer) please. Look out for 2 ladies from my dojo Gisell and Lizzy............

Knockdown rules, which I doubt would ever happen at the olympics would attract a hell of a lot more viewers than TKD and Point fighting. Just my thought on the matter. But with WKF heavily involved, I'm sure it will be point fighting...... Don't think we will see it past Tokyo................

Both. I have a small portable Makiwara that travels with me everywhere. Mostly for conditioning tho..... Bag for combinations etc, Makiwara, as JR says for technique and conditioning.
