I think this write up is an excellent one describing the diffrences between Traditional styles/MMA-Spor styles/ and reality based self defense styles. It's on a schools website..im not trying ot advertise for them or anything I just thought they did a good job at explaning it. I hope everyone reads it http://www.austinmartialarts.com/miniguide.html

I think yo uhave to look at it in context..sure you might be able to use it in a fight but compare to to alot of other combative stlyes and they clearly get the job done better.

They dont have black belts the only Belts MT fighters get are the ones the earn in the ring. that way no one can question whether you really earned it. IF you are looking for a quick self defense system i would also suggest looking into Krav Maga if there is one in your area. https://www.kravmaga.com has a location list.

Dangerous Techniques
TJS replied to JohnnyS's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
yes you can get out of an armbar...there is a counter to ever submission but you shouldent rely on biting/pinching ot get you out of all of them. some people like to use them as a soultion for not knowing grappling(not talking about you specifically)...dirty techniques can be effective but you have to have a descent amount of skill to use them succesfully. -
that was a pretty cool takedown.

with the adrennaline rush of a real fight it's unlikely. -

Getting pinched/bitten < getting your arm broken. tactics like that can be effective in some cases but if you have someone in an arm lock you arent going to wait for them to do something your going to break it and move on. -
It was a international Vale Tudo fight in Brazil..what are you skeptical about?
-
because no one is going to be better at groundwork than BJJ and no one is going to be better at striking tha a striking style like MT/Boxing etc. Do you think TJJ could compete with a thai boxer standing? or a BJJ'er on the ground I know what your saying and sometimes havinga single system has it's benefits...but i belive this is ost peoples reasoning.
-
yes he isa very unorthadox figheter...he is one of the only ones who has the timing ot do things like that and not get Beaten bloody. i think thats one reason so many people like him.

here is a video of a capoera fighter named mestre Hulk...he got DQ because he was trying to get out of the ring to avoid more punishment by "The smashing Machine" Mark Kerr http://216.40.244.4/misc/wvc3/wvc3_kerr_vs_hulk.zip

how do you know he has never talked smack to anyone ever? he obviously did something if he got his arm broken.

the power should come from the hip.

East vs West
TJS replied to Ghost's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
yea i dont think using the words east and west would be the best catagory. Krav maga is from the east..and MT is from Thailand etc... -
misinformation is a dangerous thing Sorry, could'nt resist |Mayur| yes thats why every single school should not advertise they teach realistic self defense..the worst thing you can do is lie to people.

I wouldent make a blanket statment like that, Kyokushin Karate competes at the Top levels of K-1 and has competed with Muay Thai pretty closely in the past...the problem is like i said 90% of the schools out there do not train like that.
