I would do either kickboxing or boxing with BJJ if it was me. -
Boxing vs Judo
TJS replied to MMouse's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Judo emphasizes throwing people to the ground. but like any good system they teach you what to do if you end up there instead of living 10 years in the past where people talked about how ground fighting was no good in real life and then didint prepeare themselves for reality then they get taken down and look like a fish out of water getting pounded into a bloody mess... -
Groundfighting
TJS replied to cross's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
1) not every fight includes multiple opponets, and why is it the other guy always has friends but you never do 2) Groundfighting is a neccesity if you want to train for the Street, You dont always have a choice, you may be tackled before you even know what hit you. To many martial artist spend 95% of thier time standing and Are a fish out of water as soon as someone is sitting on their chest pnching them. 3) Groundfighting dosent mean you have to take someone down and go a for a submission, it can be escapes and reversals that allow you to get back up as quickly as possible. It can also be avoiding submissions and achieving a dominate position. -
Yea you basically have to be at the top of the game if you want ot get rich from it...but there are a few "gatekeepers" like Gary Goodridge who make a nice amount.

The Last Samurai
TJS replied to battousai16's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I saw it last night also, Great movie imo. -
Really depends..for example in the last UFC Ricco Rodriguez made like 35k when Pedro Rizzo made 250k for th esame fight. Some guys make a few thousand and others make 100k-300k.

Do these techniques give you an edge on the street?
TJS replied to Treebranch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You could also look at it on the other side of the spectrum and say all of the guys who constantly talk about how the UFC means nothing and Dosent accuratly represent fights, etc are usually the ones who practice a style that has never been succesful in any type of mixed fighting event. -

WC Antigrappling
TJS replied to cymry's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I agree with some of the other's that have posted, The Best way to Defeat grappling is to learn it. The best way to counter takedowns is to learn wrestling/judo, etc. That said i dont know a whole lot about the WC anti-grappling, it could be good stuff, but i will remain a bit hesitant until i see it diplayed against a good grappler. -
I think you are talking about One of Shamrocks last fight's in Prid eagainst Don Frye. Shamrock had Frye in a heel hook but I dont think Don had one lock in. Frye dosent tap out. Shamrock almost broke his ankle(might have)..I know his leg was messed up. Frye also refused to tap to Yoshida and got his Arm Broken.

I dont think Aikido is good for the avergae person looking to learn how to defend themselves. There are quicker more effective means imo. -

No that's rediculous if they were or even close they would be making millions in the NBA and anyone with that kind of talent would realize it or someone else would. there are plenty of great fighters outside the NHB world but I still don tthink they would be able to compete with the Elite of todays NHB world...they are proabably the best fighters in the world. -
A) you are a kid. B) You have proabably never been in a real fight. C) you have defiently never been in a real fight with a pro fighter of any kind. D) Cung Le is a Pro Fighter E) He trains full time. F) you train a few hours a week G) he has beaten more proffesional fighters then you will ever even meet. F) the only way you could beat cung lee is if you had a tatoo of him on your.....

shadow-boxing
TJS replied to martialartsresearcher's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
you work on your technique when you shadow box. -
I see your point but larger more athletic people are going to be more effective no matter what the stlye. In my personal opinion it dosent matter if you weigh 90 or 190 pounds, an elbow to the face and kick/knee to the groin are atleast going to stun most people and allow time for escape. Im not against jiu jitsu, I think it's a great art and good for small people. Even in jiu jitsu it is going to be easier for a larger stronger person to execute many of the techniques. It seem to me though you are going to a bit of an extreme since the general population wanating to learn self defense are not frail and fragile old women, although like I said I have worked with many elderly people and most have little problems, especially with the self defense techniques. KM was designed for the general population and I beilive it suites it nicely.

Yes that is one rule i wish the UFC would re-instate. You can also kick a downed opponet in pride.
