kata and grappling
TJS replied to martialartsresearcher's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have seen Ken shamrock destroy, mutalate and break peoples ankles/legs/knees. I have seen bas Rutten choke people unconcious. Royce Gracie Broke some Arms with arm bars. I could type a page about all of the ankles, knees, shoulders, shins, elbows, etc that have been broken in various fights. All of these guys are good sportsman but have no second thought about applying a technique or knocking someone out it's not really valid to say no one would attempt a standing technique out of fear of hurting someone, people do what works if standing joint locks could work for them they would use them. -

Have yet to see a single standing joint manipulation or choke be used effectivly(except a guillotine) in any NHB competiton. no wether you think they are realistic or not shouldent affect that there have never been rules against them and you see them all the time on the ground. I belive most people agrre it's alot harder to make them work form a standing position, im not saying it's impossible just unlikely. denifetly, I was just saying that alot of fight's between tow untrained people go to the ground because theyt hrow such wil punches. I agree thats basically what i was saying, you can strike form a clinch or throw them from a clinch without going down. -

Absolutely. However, its more likely that a fight will end up on the ground than it will remain standing. Because of this fact I choose to do the majority of my training where the majority of fights happen, in the clinch/ground range. How many fights do you see that happen at karate sparring range? As for standing joint locks like wrist locks...I think they're a low percentage shot. It might work, or you might get elbowed/punched in the face. A good 'ol takedown or throw/sweep is more reliable. If you have ever seen a street fight it's obvious why so many end up on the ground, people throw wild, off balance haymakers and crash into each other. your right about the distance part though, alot of standup styles sped all or the large majority of their time in punching kicking range and they dont know what to do when someone smothers them. Knees, elbows, headbutts, etc whould all be a part of your game if your training for realism...you can train for the that without having to go to the ground..close range combatives can be very effective. -
Home Training for Jiu Jitsu
TJS replied to Shorty's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Unless you have a partner to train with it's going to be nearly impossible to apply new things. -
I thought we were talking about speed not power? I dont see how any of this relates to faster hand speed or footowork than boxing.

I dont think most stlyes have any, I know BJJ dosent..judo might have some but i dont think they are common. -
How can a strike with recoil be effective? unless you rely on ending a fight with one strike thats not very practical.

Boxing vs Judo
TJS replied to MMouse's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
You forgot one thing, Boxing will also teach you how to not get punched, boxers have great footwork and head movement- not getting punched and being tough enough to shrug it off if you do is proabably one of the most important things you can learn in a street fight. -
Western Boxing Hands down.

Boxing vs Judo

Very Tough Call, boxers are tough but i would proabably say Judo -
Johnny is correct, Wrestling is proabably one of the best bases to have wether you want ot be a striker or a grappler. Wrestlers are very good at controlling their opponets. In pure stlye vs Style a wrestler can usually handle most people because of this their weakness is usally submissions. most jiu jitsu or judo guys would still submitt a pure wrestler. But teach a wrestler to strike and he is hard ot take down, teach him submissions and he can put you on the ground and keep you there. Basically wrestler are the best at dictatig the positioning in a fight.

i think most schools have rediculous policys wheni t comes to fighting. Unless you sit there and let someone punch at kick you repeatedly into a bloddy mess you get in trouble too. They dont care if you were defending yourself..if you fight back you get in trouble. Learn some jiu jitsu and choke them out without ever throwing a punch..problem solved

Just a question
TJS replied to KaratekaAikidoist's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Pure Wrestlers will usually get submitted by Jiu jitsu guys. Wrestlers are usually very strong conditioned athletes and they are good at controlling on the ground. Teach them submissions and your in a whole new ball park. -
Ninjutsu vs. Jujutsu
TJS replied to BlackRose's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yet you attempt too discredit the Early UFC's when there were no rules. atleast none that favored anyone. Anyone that argues that "war games" are closer to war than true NHb is to real fighting is blindling beliving a load of * or likes to create double standards. -

I think it's comical that you would think this was made up...What would the results be of a krav maga instructor making up a story like this then posting it on the internet? do you think no one would find out? what would be the results of that? You said it, and i'll say it..you can "what if" alot of things...but the fact is nothing did go wrong. -

I also think it's comical that Warp spider is always talking about how MMA competitions do not accuratly represent real fights,...they arent a good judge of techniques and stlyes, etc, etc....then he turns around and uses military "games" as a way to judge the effectiveness of the military. -

Really? Where did you here this? I recognize that the US military is embarrassed to tell you that, but they have war games versus the Canadian military every year and lose every single time. It's not that they're a bad military, just that they are heavily mechanized, designed for wide-open desert fighting, and that doesn't mesh well with special forces. Canada has a Military??
