  1. congrats, Competition helps you grow.
  2. So you know Guy Mezgers going rate? Do you know what % of his students compete? or are you speaking out of complete ignorance on the situation?
  3. sasori- te, you seem to be way off base... Wrong Guy Mezger is a King of Pancrase, UFC torunamnet Winner and a world champion Kickboxer. He is proabably in the top 10 in the world today in his weight class. You seem to be under the impression that a world class NHB school wont be able to offer "Self defense" to someone looking for it. Guy Mezger has a black belt in karate and well as extensive kickboxing and grappling knowladge...I bet he can get some descent training there. MMA stlye training can be effective even if you dont plan on competing..besides as i said earlier he offers Karate and kickboxing classes aswell.
  4. There are a few Machado Jiu jitsu school's in the area i belive. Guy Mezger also runs a lions den out there...they offer karate, kickboxing, and submission grappling classes...that would proabably be your best bet.
  5. Right, there are of course ways to teain people to be aware of their surrounding and otehr threats. but your right most people dont train that way and it's hard not to get tunnel vision especialy if your in a tough fight.
  6. I completly disagree with this.. Grappling gives you alot more tools if you dont want to hurt someone, You can take them down and achieve a dominat postition or there are plenty of restraints/pins/locks etc like you see in judo, aikido or policework. You dont have to break peoples arms in most cases, the avg person who is just upset will calm down from pain complience most likley. You also dont have to choke someone out for it ot be effective...If you have someone in a choke and let go right before they go out it's going to slow them down and stun them. I dont think I would hit someone soft to "Stun" them. If it is to the point where I feel in enough danger that i have to hit someone then im going to hit them hard and not stop until they are down. Now as Far as self defense situations go I belive Striking is generally a better option but not for that reason. However as Andrew green pointed out there isint a clear cut line between the two.
  7. Karateka won via Stoppage in the 3rd round. I didint get to see the fight but I hear he got knocked down with a reverse punch in the 3rd. Supposed to have been a pretty good fight until then.
  8. The fight shoudl be happening tonight so the rsults proabably wont be up for a day or 2.
  9. Um yea...obviously it for Striking not grappling so a grappler would not do well. It was created so people could see various standup stlyes compete against each other....There have been grappling tournaments for a long time and obviously a striker wouldent do well in one of those.
  10. Because he calls every top fighter or martial artist a phoney and says he can beat them all up.
  11. or not.
  12. yea, good point diffrent parts of the world offer diffrent threats that martial artist should prepare for. Like you said Here in the U.S. Wresling is in just about every high school/junior high so you should prepare for the obvious threat of someone taking you down.
  13. i guess im biased but so is everone else. My suggestion would be to try and locate a Krav Maga training center and check it out.
  14. Key lock is simple and effective Straight arm bar is good put if you dont get it you will loose position. I like to go for an arm triangle choke personally. there are also a few neck cranks/chokes. If i were you I would use the key lock and get good at it.
  15. I assume you mean to a street fight, not to a NHB match. OTOH, do you do an art that you think is more complete than boxing? When will you be fighting Mike Tyson? Perhaps a given individual does not need to be able to defeat another in order to have a better idea. There is certainly something to be said for size, strength, speed, endurance, skill level and experience. I was simply commenting on the fact that amp made it seem as if takedowns and any sort of grappling were easily countered by crotch biting and scratching. I wouldent make a claim like "oh all you have to do is kick a boxer in the legs and you can beat any of them" While it's definetly possibel to play that game with a boxer it would depend on who could "play their game".
  16. They will wear 10 oz gloves...and yes PVwing chun there are rules...those same rules will apply to his opponet also...
  17. Dont make excuses before the poor guy even fights
  18. K-1 rules allow -punches -kicks to the body, head and legs -No elbows -Knees are allowed but you are not allowed to clinch for an extended period like in MT.
  19. I think im missing something, when you have him in a tight gaurd and close in and pull him in you get arm barred??
  20. In the UFC, you can't hit in the crotch or the eye. If you're taking someone down and they're in a lot of pain, a fingernail right in the middle of your eye slicing tissue will make most people let go fast and take them out for a long time. Anyone who's gotten tagged in the crotch knows how bad that hurts. Imagine thinking you've got the guy in a really good lock and getting your crotch chomped on hard. People will bite, scratch, tear, and claw when you grapple them. Above all, concrete hurts a lot. Don't get close to a desperate losing man. Man you got it figured out, You should go Challenge mark Kerr or Mark coleman and make a name for yourself.
  21. There has been some Talk and discussion of WC competing in the Ring and how god or bad it would do. Obviously one fight wont settle anything but a WC Practicioner will be competing in K-1 kickboxing soon.
  22. I think RB means you can attempt to begin a submision while standing and then take them to the ground as long as it isint dangerous. Because im pretty sure Johnny is right about the standup part.
  23. If you have a training partner they can be a great resource, they have alot of good info in them.
  24. Be prepared for alot of conditioning and have fun.
