You do have to be in close for a low side kick. For example, when someone's close enough to grab your arm. Nothing's over-rated if it works. Teakwondo, eh? I've taken tkd and its mostly about point sparring and competition. Not to say that taekwondo isn't effective. A good kick of any kind is still a good kick. For me, it didn't teach nothing about weapons and how to defend against them. Its great that you are not scared of him. If you do fight him, tells us how it turns out. I'll have my popcorn ready. Yeah, and butter, too.

No martial art is better than any other, because for any martial art there is always a weak point. What makes a martial art great or not, is the teacher. Think if it, if you take two style of karate that is the same with two different teacher, and one is a great teacher and one is a good teacher. You'll will have the same martial art, but with different quality of student.

Never let the b@stard know that your afraid. I have come across one person like this across my life. They'll poke and probe you to see how much you'll take. They think you some wimp who doesn't stand up for himself thats why they like picking on you. Thats why never show them you're afraid. Sometimes the best way to handle these people is to say something back, standing up for yourself, to show them you're not some whimp without actually having a fight. If the situation actually escalate, be confident in your training. What do you study? In the martial art its not about strenght, otherwise old people and children won't be able to take it. Martial art is about leverage, its about smarts. Its about how the a low side kick thrusted from the hip can break someones knee or how to always be aware of your surrounding. This confortation is just one more reason to turn up the heat up in your training. Good luck.

What's your favorite movie, show, and song?
CTpizzaboy replied to three60roundhouse's topic in General Chat
movie: Forrest Gump(never cried like a baby since I was a little boy and watched Bambi's mother died) TV show: The Simpsons(there's always a lack of plot, but it sure funny. Funny like "Police Acadamy" not like "Space Balls") Song: "Fade" by Staind(a therapy session for only $15.95 and which last a lifetime.) -

Ah, man!!! Sounds terrible. If you have to wait to see a specialist in 6-8 weeks, and surgery to fix the problem, you'll probrably be out for a couple of months. Just take it in strides, man.

Kata is not a waste of time. For beginners, in kata you learn how to punch and kick. Maybe its hard to learn but nothing is easy. For the advance student, kata is a way to refine a technique because there is always room for improvement. If you think that kata is a waste of time, don't throw away your money in Karate. Learn Muay Thai instead. To be a great fighter, one does not only depend on kata. So to say that kata is a waste of time is nonsense. There is a tremendous number of external and interanal variables that come into play in a great fighter.

Black Belt to a White belt

Ninjas are cool. -
Since we have to kiai really loud after every technique, in this new language we all have to speak very loud and kiai after every sentence. WHAT ABOUT THAT, EH??? KIAI.

The power in a punch relies on your forearm, shoulder and hip. Stand in front of a heavy bag with your shoulder squared( shoulders facing bag, feet pointing forward, knees bent). Keeping your shoulders squared at all times punch the bag with left, vertical fist, hitting with first two knuckles. Then right, then left, and on. Do ten. Next, with every punch, turn the shoulder as you punch, toward the bag. There's a difference in that you feel the power which is generated. Next, stand in fighting position and punch the bag with leading hand, this time with a noraml fist(horizontal fist). Remember the feeling of power with the shoulder turned? Remember the feeling, turn the shoulders, and the hips, which also turns your foot and hit the bag as hard as you can. Practice in class, practice at home, practice in your sleep. And even at the dinner table if your mom allow. Hope that helps.

Look, ramcalgary. I know you weren't referring to anyone but I wasn't dissing or cutting anyone. Because I don't have a high belt doesn't mean I don't do my katas as sharp as anyone else or better. Or can fight and hold my ground. And just because I don't believe the importance of a belt or don't even know where my last one is, does not mean I don't have respect for a higher ranking people. I know the dedication it takes to be a black belt and when I get mine, will be proud to put it on my resume. And cheer up man, it's only a freaking post. Os!!!

I say leading with a cross(reverse) is risky because its easily counter. If someone came in at me with a cross and we stood in a close fighting stance(he's leading with the right side and so am I) I'll hook him with my right or roundhouse kick or drive in a front kick. I usually lead with my forward side. Its not powerful but quick, and once there's an openning I'll do a reverse punch or kick. What's your opinion?

First studied ITA Taekwondo for a half a year, got blue belt. Then swtich to Yoshu Kai Karate, now a purple belt. Once I got my second belt, my white belt became irrelavent, then came my next belt and my last belt was just a long colored clothe, and so on until eternalty. Belts are irrelavent. I know alot of people who can kick a$$ without a belt just because they are born like a bull. However, martial art is not about how good an athelete you are, but what's inside the soul. Your dedication and perseverance. Alright, no more bla..bla... from me. Now where, did I put that beer... "Honor is all we have." Oss!!

Great post and great suggestions that anyone can use. However, I wouldn't lead with a cross(refer to Prodigy-Child post). Easily counter because your head will be leaning in to the opponent.

Hello, Mike From England. What a strange name, man. . How's the weather there?

Getting a new color belt is not what motivates me to be great in karate. Wow, two months from now I'm going to get a yellow belt. Like I'm ever going to wear it to a funeral or on a date. A belt to me is just a marker to where I'm at in my martial art life. One thing that motivate me, however is to be able to handle a front kick in the gonads. Been practicing it on the street. "Hey, baby, you got nice breast." BAM!! (teeth clinched) "Don't worry, I'm OKAY."
