  1. The site is a fluke. Classic "I need money so please fork over some" routine. The guy is actually a film student and trying to raise some money to make a film.
  2. Everything you do physically, effects you mentally, and every thought is displayed action. For example: You must think "Type the letter E", before you type "E". Otherwise, your neurons are not sending the right messages. Alright. Enough psychology. ramcalgary is asking, what do you seek to gain, internal growth such as self-enlightment or the ability to kick major as$. I say: TO KICK major as$. "I think, therefore I am." -Greek wise-guy
  3. Hey now, four bucks can get you along way. Literally, my car can last a week with four bucks. Awesome link, Kickchick.
  4. Welcome to the forum. What is your style of MA?
  5. You are only old, When you can not enjoy Life, Because you have done everything you have dreamed. Welcome to the forum.
  6. The Beatles, John Denver, AC/DC, Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, Tool, Stained. "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, Let it be..." -The Beatles
  7. Welcome to the forum, zulu.
  8. AO is right in some aspect. Learn the basic. Even a street fighter has to learn the basic. Punch, hook and upper cut. It might take him a few black eyes and bloody noses, but after that he's punching people like most street fighter. The only reason a street fighter might win over a well trained martial artist is that they are comfortable in that situation or settings. They are use to the flood of emotion that accompanies an agressive situation; not to say that sparring in training is not as agressive. It just happen that my partner in training does not want to tear my heart out and eat it in front of me, but want to help me progress in MA. About sparring in training, obviously a student can't sparr someone without the basic. Either he'll get beaten or will develope bad habits if he tries to train and sparr at one time. Most people are not naturals at any martial arts. Techniques must be broken down so they can train at their own pace, away from students who they find intimidating. What AO over look is that most MA does not consider kata as truely training. That true in my opinion. For example: I work out on a heavy bag 2 times a week, perfecting my technique, enabling me to punch faster, kick with more power. Often times picturing an opponent as the heavy bag. But I need to come to class to sparr, or pick fights on the street to be able to use my knowledge effectively. I need someone to punch at me, know how to defend, develope footwork, and learn what works. Not that kata is not an effective training tool. Its just not effective in these modern days with fast food and information at one's finger tips. People want to learn matial arts fast and how to use it effectively even faster. I find katas as a great stress reducer because it helps me focus. My girlfriend does also, but that not appropiate to discuss here."To be the wiser of all men, one must look at a situation from all perspective."
  9. Not to brag but I once got attack by a alien from a planet in the Vega system(I happened a chance to ask where he was from), two rottwiellers, a bear, a sheep, and my mother-in-law. Didn't know what to do, so I pretended to be dead, worked great.
  10. No one is too young to start. Unlike many other sports, martial art is more a way of life and it will slowly grow on you. Its bad that not everybody can have the finance to take it though. Good to see you started trainging out home, you have a head start. If you do get serious about it, train at a school, then also train at home. About your weight, not a problem. Not everybody is built like Bruce Lee that take MA. Just take it slow. They make you sign a contract, which you'll have to monthly even if you do not attend class. Keep that in mine.
  11. Welcome to the forum. Thats one ackward name to type.
  12. Thats actually funny. In my Karate class, before class, we bow and sit on our needs and close our eyes for a few seconds. Very traditional. But when a new student come in or we have visitors, he'll say, "What we are doing is not something religious." or a comment in that flavor.
  13. spinninggumby:Funny how such cheesy BS can still make so much sense. Thats absolutely true.
  14. The point of making a fake is to make it look like a real hit. If the fake does not work, do not use it. Most people I sparred in Karate class, pretty much fight in one place, so any sudden movement on my part throws them off or leave them open. And like Jim said, most people will respond to any sudden movement, which does not have to resemble anything at all. Great info, Jim. The shaolin monk has spoken. Now go, grasshopper!!
  15. ZR440, that was classic. lol. Now if she a cold Canadian, its more like 3 sweater, bear skin coat, thermal under jeans. I like mine hot in the summer, shaken not stir.
  16. My common mistake in sparring is withdrawing or backing up too much. My sensei tells me to either counter and punch, or step to the side but do not back up. He saids only do it as part of a strategic strategy. I do it alot. What is your mistake in sparring?
  17. Welcome to the board, MacieJ. Now whats wrong with being obessed with sex, man. lol. I love Hooters, wet t-shirt contests, and girls jumping on trampulings. God Bless America. But I have to agreed, most kids these they are not respectful, rude, and only care about themself, selfish little b&$tard. When I was 18, we didn't have MTV or Hooters. There was just my pa on a banjoe with a harmonica and old Mrs. Barbara across the street. And seeing her in a night gown gave me nightmares. Now I'm tarting to sound like my grandpa on one of his rants about life. Were the hell did I put that Viagra bottle?
  18. Yeah, Cory's right, sounds like a type error. Bruce Lee did explore many different arts to develope his own, but I don't believe he took Taekwondo. JKD and TKD. You say potatoe, I type tomatoe.
  19. No, a feint is not like weaving and bobing to let a punch pass by for you to counter. A feint is more like misdirection, what magicians do. Say a boxer 1 lowers his guard, and sticks his head forward suddenly. The opponent sees that as an open and go for a knock-out. But it was all planned, the moment the opponent strike with the reverse punch, boxer 1 shift to the right, missing the punch, and counters with a hook. The opponent goes down. A feint is a move that startles your opponent as you counter or strike. In class while sparring, get within kicking range, then suddenly shift your weight to your front foot. See what happens, what is the reaction.
  20. Martial art movie of a time would be(drum roll)...Rumble in the Bronx. It had great martial art choreography, great plot, but at the same time the movie did not take itself seriously. It made me laugh, made me cry, and afterward I had to use the rest room. I like your quotes, SG. They make think of different things, but I don't know what....
  21. Welcome to the forum. What rank are you ?
  22. Yeah, the link does not work, guest no one else us it otherwise there be more mentions about it. My weapon be lightsaber, handed down by my great, great, great, great grandfather. Nunchucks...Nunchucks... Nunchucks...Nunc....
  23. In karate class, we use the traditional wooden nunchucks, octagon shaped. These are really special, however, they are handmade and the ends are not the same size. The end that is attacked to the cord, is smaller than the handle end. The shape looks like an upside down "v". The swing is smooth. The handle thats flying doesn't wobble as I bring it around to catch. Do you know of this type of nunchucks?
  24. Chang has a good point. Nothing can beat a gun, awareness is the key. Here's another what if scenario. You have an argument with some man in a bar, your head is to his chin. Your arguing, he gets mad and attempts to push you with both hands. The moment you saw his arms lift, you waited until they got to shoulders height. Then you perform a double ridge hand to his ribs. He caves, you knee his a$$. He goes to ground. His girl friend, to the side, starts screaming. You forget about her, for the moment. You're about to stomp his a$$ when the girl friend jumps on your back, starts biting your neck. You fall backward to the floor, and headbutt her on the face, she lets go. Before you get up, the man kicks you in your gonads, your down, he starts stomping you. Someone stops the fight later but your already bruise up. How do you get someone off your back, clinging to you, and biting you?
