Hello. Welcome to the forum.

Ah, the contraversity continues... Are we talking about real life situations or in the dojo and in the UFC, which is a tournament. The line must be drawn. I have never studied BJJ, and no one can deny its effectiveness in a tournament such as the UFC. However, the streets and the UFC are two different realms. In the UFC there are rules, so its a sport like any other sport(boxing, kick-boxing, Muay-thai boxing). But in real life there are no rules. An opponent might have a gun, knife or have friends with knifes and guns. Not to discredit how effective Rickson Gracie is as a street fighter or a BJJ master, but why go to the ground or concrete and prolong a fight. Instinctively, he would like to end the fight as quick as possible. In a real fight, nothing would be more effective than what is learn in the army or the marines. However, in real life there are no rules. What if we took a marine and pit him against a BJJ martial artist? Here's another hypothetical question. What if we pitted a Krav Maga artist(the most scientific art, according to what I've read) against a BJJ? My beef about the UFC is that its just a sport and people are making it more that it is. Whether BJJ is effective on the street is irrelavent, because this is a tournament. Ken Shamrock and other UFC are great athletes. The UFC have massive athletes. These are such great athletes that I would think twice before going hand to hand combat on the street. The UFC is a sport, but that is not to discredit how effective they are as martial artist. IF Ken Shamrock opened a school, I would be the first to sign up for class. The sayin "99% of fights go to the ground" is true, because most UFC matches go to the mat. Not much action. There should a rule against ground fights that stale. Hey, I paid for my pay-per-view and I want some action Dammit.

Ah, the snow... memories. Jogging in 20 degrees below weather. Let me ponder.......If only...If only I was dumb and stupid, walk on fours, had 2 layers of fur, and bark, then I might consider running in the snow in 20 degrees below weather. Hey, I might even work my ass off and pull a sled for some lazy b*****d. Well, as long as the b*****d takes me to the beach every summer so I can lick ice cream off girls breast. I'm joking. _________________ I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversations. [ This Message was edited by: [CT]pizzaboy on 2001-12-10 17:39 ] -
I have a bad right knee and hate walking up stairs or down stairs. My knee cartilage seems to have worned out and its just bones grinding on bones. However, walking on a level path is fine. In martial art class, I try using my left leg more often than my right, but my right has more kicking speed so I tend to use my right leg also. This been going on for two weeks. Haven't seen the doctor. Maybe it will get better. Been finding some information on the internet about this pain in my knee. Just wanted to know if any forum memebers have this same problem with their knee. What causes your knee pain? What have you done to relieve the pain? Will buying special shoe soles help? Appreciate the knowlege.

Dammit, if only I knew Japanese...The wise guy whom saids, "Ignorance is bliss", should get kicked. Oh, well. My favorite: feint by throwing a jab to the face that does not connect, step forward at the same time with a punch to the face, upper cut to the stomach, reverse-ridge hand to the face/cheek. Remember to KIAY!! on the last move. Combinations tend to work only once.

I started performing spins when I was green belt, the spinning side-kick, spinning and kicking with the back leg, also spinning cresents. Our school doesn't incorporate jumps until blue belt(jump-spinning cresent, 360 side-side,etc..). There is not a level were a student is considered advanced enough to perform spins or jumps. Wait, there is, its green belt, however, it really boils down to your abillity. Now with so many students coming in with other martial arts experience, a belt is just a belt, it doesn't represent one's ablility. Just learn the baiscs well, grain them in your mind, then you'll be tough to beat. Then rule the world... um, wait don't rule the world.

Henry, man, if you know what you did was right, then stand up tall. There are no rules on the streets. So what your sensei knows that you were in a fight. Stop drinking alcohol? What a great ideal. In life, having a little more brain cells than the next guy is a great asset.

Taekowndo does not use pressure points. We have blocks(inside, outside, knife hands, X blocks, a square or double block). Mostly taekwondo, at least at my school, deals with sparring and forms. Kicks are used 70% of the time, and advanced students incorporate aerial kicks. Lately, different martial art styles are being judge on how effective they are on the street. Taekwondo is not recommended if your in that school of thought.

Welcome to the forum, Minh. I had a friend name Minh Nguyen in grade school. This is the only cool place on the internet that deals with maritial arts. KIAH! Peace.

Interesting. Never heard of that form before. Must do some research on this one...wait, sorry man, found out I'm low on brain cells.
-
Welcome, man. So you created your own system?
-
How about an inverted/twist front kick to the groin. My subonim can perform that move to someone's head. Not sure if it's effective on the street.

I've had experience in this situation. I was argue with boy in my neighborhood and he was just 2 feet in front of me yelling. I just stood there, my heart was pounding. I knew he was going to get out a knife or a weapon. Something bad was going to happen. He swung a punch to the right side of my face, but I block it. Instinctively, with my left I punch him at the upper lip. He started bleeding then I ran home. A few months later we were playing football, a few kids on the block(5 on 5). He was on the other team. I caught a ball, running toward the touchdown, when a hard tackle landed me on the ground. My chest landed on top of the football, and almost knocked the wind out of me. He was the one whom tackle me. I got off the ground, gave him a hard push and went back to the line of scrimage. Sure he was more athletic, and works out. However, I can kick his a$$ any day.

Doug, I thought you study in Kuk Sool Won. The recent post said you study in Tang Soo Do, an art Chuck Norris studied. However, back to the subject. Yep, the punch are the same. Just keep in mine to punch with your first two knuckles(the top part), not the flat part. I broke my four and fifth matacarpalls on my right hand(a boxer's break). Does your art incorporate spins;180s, 360s?
-
HAAA!! Nice, tae. No hurt here, man. Bet I can beat you in sparring.
-
You talking about a wall bag? I've got one of those. I put sand in it.

Something fishy here, is Jiggy a girls name. Must go edit my post.

A trick question, because apparently there's only one way to perform a punch or a kick. I've only study taekwondo and practice some boxing drill so I don't have alot to compare with, however the difference is between a style's emphasis. In taekwondo, its kicks, flexibility, and for the advanced, aerial kicks. With boxing, its the hands, developing muscles, and mobility aound the ring. Also between traditional and non-traditional schools, even though teaching the same style, they emphasize different aspects fo the art.

Nice. Thanks Jiggy. Lori, I come scoup you in my Coupe, sitting on deuze zeros, fixing your hair in the mirror, lets roll. _________________ One's growth in the martial arts is a correlation between alot of hard work and dedication. [ This Message was edited by: [CT]pizzaboy on 2001-11-30 13:20 ]
