  1. Some of the qualities that make a great sensei is the ability to inspire and motivate. My sensei show this everyday, and his name is Ray Nichols.
  2. Alright, that was five minutes of my life I would never get back. Thats not scary, its funny. I didn't see nothing. All I saw was a folded five, ten, and a twenty dollar bill. If there wasn't pictures to the side, nodody would see it either.
  3. Tournaments cost alot, compare to what you get out of it. Blackbelts compete first, then goes down in ranking order. Forms are first then sparring. So depending on your rank and division, you'll have to wait. The waiting is the worse part. And most regional tournaments are not organized and chaotic. Judges are in jeans and shirt. Partically, anybody can be a judge, even little kids. Of course the kids have on blackbelts, but thats a pile of ..... With national tournaments, they run like clock work and are very well organized. However, you'll have to worry about airplane transportation and hotel stays, which can add up to alot of money.
  4. Never heard of it, but sounds cool. How much did it cost?
  5. When you study Karate for a long time, it tends to encompass every aspect of your daily life. For other people, its just a hobby, but for me its just my life. When going to karate becomes a chore, I'll stop. So when does fighting becomes second-nature? You know when you'll get there. Does it mean that you will be able to defend yourself in a fight? Yes. Against a knife-attacker? Probrably not. Unless you specifically train for that situation, you won't know how to react. How you train is how you'll react. If you haven't train for a knife attack, you won't know what to do. Remember to be realistic about your training. No one is immortal.
  6. England is just another country. The people their are like Americans, but just with different customs, and have an accent. Thats my impression of England, base on my impression of London. I would like to go to London, just to experience the different customs, and the beers, and the ladies, and the beers.
  7. Run on Monday Weight train Tuesday Run on Wednesday Weight train Thursday Run on Friday Bag work Saturday Rest Sunday I do light wieghts/high reps on leg curls. Works out my knees, without much pressure. I've got bad knees. Same ratio with forearm, calves, triceps, back. But with chest, biceps, hamstrings, quads, I put on as much wieght as possible with only 10 reps.
  8. And the crowd goes wild, chanting, "USA, USA, USA, USA!!!" But not everyone is cheering. Why? Maybe they can see a part of us that we cannot, the corruption in the business world, the lying, the half truths. But people around the world still flock to America like an oasis in an desolate world. Why? Because they can see a better life in America. My family did. We came over here in 1985.
  9. We were never thought any specific stance, just keep the hands up. Don't need to block every technique thrown. Bring in the elbows to blocks kicks. Sparr alot and you will recognize how a technique looks like before it is even thrown.
  10. Great links Taikudo-ka.
  11. First thought when I saw this thread. Warning: Death trap, do not answer, proceed with caution. But I took the quiz, and the quiz was stupid. Got 15 out of 35. The quiz was geared toward women, and was not meant for men to answer. However, maybe there is no difference between men and women. And women do make the same wages as men. And the sun does revovle around the earth. Ah well.
  12. I need to emphasize a point Kickchick(Deby) brought up. I can weightlift, get stronger, but never hit a golf ball as far as Tiger Woods can. Why? Technique. How does that apply to the martial arts? Technique matters.
  13. I saw that last night with my dad. My dad and I watch the show and talk about it. One thing came up was that Bruce Lee did alot for the martial art and for the Asian community but he was not an actual fighter, meaning he never actually competed. Although, he did teach some of the great fighters like Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris, he never competed himself. In the Game of Death, the fight scenes were only one techique, no combinations. In actual sparring or fighting, throwing combinations would be more beneficial than throwing one techique. Then we were reminded that it was only a movie, when we noticed the rubber nunchucks. Kareem Jabbar's kicking technique were alittle sloppy, especially his spinning side kick. The documentary was good and the interview of Bruce Lee was informative.
  14. First time I saw this mpeg clip, I thought damn, this can't be real, then I realized thiscan be an actual baby. This is a clip where you only view once, so if you need to use the restroom, go now. The language is in Japanese. Please do not view this if you are easily offended. http://snmichels.home.attbi.com/satans_child.mpeg
  15. (left stance) Reverse front kick: remember to draw your right shoulder forward with the leg to add power. " " Front kick: hard kick to master because the power must come from the hip. " " Side kick: most powerful kick but takes alot of practice. Power comes from the hip rotation at the moment of impact. When hip rotates, supporting foot must point away from opponent. Watch the upper rank and see what they are doing right to generate power compare to what you are doing.
  16. wieght lifting
  17. Jack, I do not agree with your first point. If you're weight lifting, you should get no more than a day off so your body can rejuvenate.
  18. In general, you can not begin weight training and be expect to be able to bench 100lbs or squat 300lbs. If you can, drop everything you are doing and go join the Olympic weight training team in your country. You have to work your way up to be able to bench 100lbs, and muscle strenght increase very slowly (unless you use steroids), but decrease very rapidly. Say you can bench 100lbs, you stay away of lifting for just one week and you will not be able to lift that amount. Those are the basic principles. At 15, its not bad for you to weight train. Just start off light or you hurt yourself. Polymetrics: basically the use of an exposive muscle contraction to increase strenght. Doing push-ups in an explosive manner is consider polymetrics. Just push up really fast, but go down really slow. Anything with an exposive muscle contraction is consider polymetrics. Protein: Essential to muscle growth because muscle are compose mainly of protein. But supplements are not needed. Don't waste your money. Excessive protein can harm, and will do you no good. Regularly MAs do not need excessive protein. Just eat a well- balance-diet (drink alot of water, eat alot of carbohydrates: -rice, bread-, eat vegetables, fruits), stay away from sweet and fat foods and thats all you'll need. I give myself Sundays to eat anything I want, but the other days I watch what I eat. Eat RIGHT, train hard and you do fine. Plus you'll look good in front of the ladies. That's all we want.. Right??
  19. Heres the basic. Lifting a heavy wieght at low reps will make you stronger which gives muscle strenght. Lifting light wieght at high reps give muscle endurance. As a martial artist, you only need muscle endurance. Running and lifting light wieght is good. As a professional whom competes, you will need both, muscle strenght and muscle endurance. A man starts a wieght lifting program for 6 months lifting 100 lbs, he nevers add anymore wieght. Will he be stronger at the end of the six month than he was before. No. If he was able to lift 100 lbs at the beginning, he's strong. But after a while of lifting wieghts, the muscles adapt and his strenght platues, evens out. Thats why its important to keep adding on lbs if your weightlifting. And if you're liftng, its twice as important to be stretching ALOT than if you did not lift wieghts. You want power, but not at the expense of reach and flexibilty. Lifting wieghts will give you power and an advantage over someone who does not. Good luck.
  20. It was a great movie. I like the aerial shots of spiderman swinging around NYC and Kristen Dunst, especially when wet. The hospital scenes had some cheesy lines, (the ladies start crying in 3...2..1..) but was brilliantly acted by Dunst and Peter Parker's character. Great movie to have a girl along. If you have read Spiderman's comic books, you know what happens to the relationship between Parker and MJ. But the ending did stunk.
  21. How can someone cheat in a fight if there are no rules? On the street there are no rules. Fighting on the street is alot different than sparring in class. There is no feinting, no circling around your opponent, no fancy foot movement. When a fight happens, it happens fast. With a blink of an eye, you can be jumped from behind by a gang or have two guys running at you trying to pound you to the ground. They don't want to kill you, just want to give you a few broken ribs, and a good excuse for missing work for a month. So what do you do? Anything you can (knees, elbows, eye gouging, running) from getting a ride to the hospital in an ambulance. "All I can do is hit him back ten times harder."
  22. Belts are tough to tie when you first get it. I only wash my belt the first time so the belt will be more pliable. Or I'll give it to my dog so he can chew it up for a few days. That method also works. After that, I'll never wash my belt again. There's no need to.
  23. First off, what style of martial art do you study and what types of blocks are you talking about? Not all blocks are the same, and not all can be used in the same circumstances. For example, I would NOT take the same approach of blocking with a bareknuckle fight as with an attacker with a knife. I find that the inner and outer blocks are useless in sparring, therefore I would not use it on the street in a fight. Sparring is not the same as a real situation on the street, but it does give you a chance to try what technique work, what needs to be done to get this affect and that reaction. With five months, in general, you should have a basic ideal of what works and what does not.
  24. I've never been in a hostile situation, and hope it stays that way. However, I have gotten into one fight. This guy swung a punch at me, I blocked it by just raising my hand to my face, and punched him in his lip with my other hand. But back in the good old days, when I was in 1st grade, I got pick on alot by three boys because I didn't talk much. One time one of the boy trip me while I was playing tag with a friend through the playground. I feel and tasted grass. I got up, and saw that he was by himself. I told him I knew karate and he better be careful. He said, "Yeah, right. Show me." I told him to close his eyes. Then he said, "Why, you think I'm stupid." I told him that I warned him and spitted in his eye. Then I ran, and ran like a dog was chasing me. The next day I got beat up, but not that bad because a teacher came and broke it up.
  25. America is the land of McDonalds, and pizzas, thats why we're fat. When a foreign country wants a piece of "Americana" they build a McDonalds in thier largest cities. People should not stop eating a McD, just have it once a week, not every day at lunch. If you eat alot of calories, you must burn it off by exercising or its going to turn into fat. After lunch don't go and watch TV but go and walk for a few minutes to burn off the calories.
