  1. I agree with the weight lifting, though ankle weights, according to some, have detremental, long term effects. I would think another type of resistence you be a pool of water
  2. I agree. Although a sparring drill may not be limited to a partner. one can practice combinations, timing, reactions, with other aparatus. In other words, it is paramount with a partner (preferably a few for differences) but in case one is alone, such can still be drills, to a degree.
  3. I wonder how many consume french Vanilla as opposed to the many other flavors and brands out there. Seriously, could the raw egg thing be a bit aggrandized or indolent?
  4. Mine go back as far as the early 70's. I was sifting through one, and looking at the ads, clothing, hair styles, etc., geez, life seemed simple....
  5. You have just hit the nail on the head - respect. It is assumed that the more stripes one has, the more respect (and perhaps bring in more $$$, er, I mean students) they achieve.
  6. I agree, but some do not know how to disntiguish this as peer pressure and other things have influences stronger than caution
  7. Good call. But I really meant to include as long as the loyalty is not blinded. I still have two of the same instructors. Although we rarely train or workout together
  8. Not too far til the 4-Zero. The bright side, you could be 49 pushing 50 It seems like once you get past 30, all we do is push... Actually, up there in age, we need a extra push from others.
  9. Great point. However there are those who claim to be MMA instructors thinking all they had to do was mix or learn separate methods
  10. No offense taken nor do I desire to offend you. As I been around martial arts for some time,, I meet and discuss it with many others, only a handful really doubt that Shaolin was a actual place for fighting monks. Not to get into details of the many reasons and ideals on why, I dont think, because of its many shrouded history and lineages, that there are any traditional Shaolin Forms. This said, for any martial art also may not have "traditional" forms as martial arts were evolving, it would seem as people created new arts, changed the contents by adding or subtracting, because of this, I dont think there exists "authentic" or "traditional" arts out there. Especially with the conveniences of communist government that Shaolin and anything associated with it. I think Shaolin is overhype to stimulate a certain intrigue allowed by tourism, Chinese face, and government control.
  11. May I ask why?
  12. Nice post. Although couldn't people who haven't trained together and happen to meet just "tell" each other their ranks? For example, doctors at a medical convention, do they blab about their degrees, or about their knowledge-discoveries? I guess they should consider themeselves and all who attend professional and certifiable in the field in which, whatever event, seminar, meet, they attend. I mean, no one is going to attend a medical fnction, whom has absolutely or bare minimal knowledge in the field or subject thereof.
  13. Is Karate truly "empty hand"? If so, why is there is weapons practice? Is it Okinawan-Japanese or Chinese? Was it truly created resulting from a weapons ban? Was jumping kicks designed to kick off horsemen? Was the shuto strike designed to get into the uncovered area of the neck not protected by a helmet? Can Karate be Kung Fu or Quan Fa be Karate?
  14. Cool movie.
  15. So is it uncorrect to say something that per the communication being Engrish althou it be understood, still be uncorrect to say anyways?
  16. Stripes? Is it really a matter of display and niot actual function?
  17. Ther are two sides to this; those who say it is healthy, and those who say not. Not all ice cream has raw eggs, in which egg yolks contain lecithin to act as an emulsifier, which there are other products now available to eliminate the use of eggs. Perhps it is thought, cooked eggs create more fat tissue, as people tend to cook then in butter, oils, etc.
  18. Ranpu, as it was stated, kids in MMA may have to have a separate curriculum, monitoring, and/or guidelines.
  19. I am a bit confused here. City police do not need a conceal carry permit and may take their weapons into any establishment. We could tab about what ifs til the cows come home, but I agree that a surprise attack may not have one draw a weapon, but with the latest of compact and better holsters to draw, well, lets say I rather carry a gun than a knife for defense. As for clueless firearm instructors, many have to be certified and scrutinzed per the state in order to give said instruction-courses.
  20. A drawn knife like a drawn gun depends on the person and the holster-shealth. I dont know where you get your information, or why you choose to use a 10mm as an example, but a bullet will penetrate winter clothing, unless this clothing had kelvar panels or something. Handguns are a better defense than a blade. Attack verses response: I know a few LEO who actually got what is call "the drop" on knife wielder, cudgel wieders, etc.,
  21. What style and what was it called? Lee Ga Kuyhn
  22. Correction, I meant to say, "I for one think "Shaolin Gung Fu forms tend to be flashy......" Some gung fu has some purpose....
  23. Nice dodge! Its one of those things. Well on may way to retirement.
  24. It is about pleasing the student in order for them to stay and not letting down a sense of knowing that it isn't a authentc, adult one.
