  1. TKD offered me light-footedness and better flexibility above all else. of ocurse it a some impractical flashy moves that people enjoyed
  2. I agree. But given the application apart from the sport (like any other martial art) if a "combat modus operandi" was in place, it can be useful.
  3. Oh, I am not knocking it. Like samwiskoi stated, after having the body banged up and/or aging, Aikido can have some benefits.
  4. Here says for Karate Glove, you see "Rhee"; http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6711747.html But here you see Mitch Carlin http://www.patentgenius.com/patent/6412114.html Although it looks like Mitch had simply re-designed it and was far later than Rhee.
  5. I havent seen a high kick to the head in real fighting. And it is rare in competiton. I have seek kicks to the head medium height or near ground level. High kicks are not practical. Wonderful to watch. Wonderful to say one can do it. Flash Pizaz-cool.
  6. Oh, so we went from shear force, then added skill. Well, for that matter if there was more skill over brawn, it can go on and is circumstantial.
  7. Not really. Martial art tests are not like trying to win a ball game. And, we are not talking tests like college finals either. I cant see how anyone could fail a martial art test.
  8. Luck? Like the reverse or statue?
  9. Yeah, just make sure that if you are amist of others, run faster than them (Old joke)
  10. How so?
  11. Short rapid strikes. If there is too much swing, more probable chance of someone closing the gap.
  12. I agree. However, not everyone has the body that can take it, even in a moderate sense. Why take chances on something which may be harmful in the long run? Is it truly neccesary? Isnt all of the other training good enough?
  13. Ah, so we are all on the "same page"
  14. People used to think the same think about Judo when it first came around, then Karate, then Kung Fu, people think martial arts IS ALL about fighting. (caps for emphasis) This has been going on for awhilw. I remember when I wanted to study Judo, the mainstream thought it was a Jap art to choke someone to death. Then upon Karate, a art to pull out the spine. And so on.
  15. I dont think failure is a option. I think it may be decidely upon the instructor to make sure that the student is capable and ready.
  16. Yes. Dont get me wrong, I am not saying that a small town will not have violence. I am saying that, from my experience, they are less likely to have many like a large city.
  17. 11-5-09 45 mins of progressive kicking drills. One particular specialised drill, most cannot go past 30 minutes or a certain count. Whew....Age is ceeping up on me...
  18. We did wrist curls and arm movment with 2x4, then 4x4's. this also helped with grip, but it is in the placement of the hand-fingers along with the size and type of wood.
  19. It is hard to fond anything new, if you had been in the same town for a period of time. Usually, to find something new or different requires some travel.
  20. My question would be why should you kick high? In other words, what s the primary reason to do so?
  21. Spaaring can help in developng reflexes, to a degree and help in overcoming certain fears, like the onfrontation and lso of getting hit. However, for defense, sparring could slow down a defense process of not following through, and/or hesitation
  22. Nicely said. If this is the case, then why are there so "many specialised" martial arts? It would seem that if one wnated to benefit ina martial art, they may learn others just in case there is something they can use in their current one.
  23. As we see youth play sports and/0r become involved in certain atheltic activities, I have seen orgs, coaches, etc., develop a entire separate routine with certain guidelines for the youth. In other words, usually the youth have their own
  24. good point. I understand. Gradual or not, there still could be long term effects. Anyone here been doing this for 40+years? Now, I am not against condtioning with moderation, but, is it really needed? I have seem many street bouts and I doubt those who were victorious did any time if hand conditioning in such fashion.
  25. It maybe the instructor desire to see the long belt. Perhaps the onstructor was the one to implement the wearing of it.
