  1. With the term bassai I find it funny that Funakoshi had to change it to please the Japanese people, since the Japanese people did not want a kata named after an okinawan family, Passai.

Yes and that can be a some what embarrassing thing when you go to style tournaments...
  4. Oh nice, what kata is needed to progress to yondan?
  5. Yeah, but when you order gi's from Shureido they come in a tint of blue, they stay that way till like 2-5 months.

Yes, especially when you train with other teachers and masters doing the same kata, you learn more Oyo bunkai. Its funny how everyone has slightly differend interpretation of the movements especially in the pinans/heians.
  7. Well your teacher did not make it up himself thats for sure...its part of the shidokan international Kata heres the link http://shidokan.dimentech.com/kata.html Here is a wikipedia link on what the term kensei means also if that helps or interests you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kensei
  8. Whats open Style Karate?, just curious I never heard of it before. Just means that we're not a traditional style. My master has a background in Goju-Ryu, TKD, Hapkido primarily and to a lesser extent Kali and Kung-fu. Our style is primarily a blend of the first three. So like the bunkai of the Goju Ryu katas would be different than that of an organized one?...Im fascinated about the Bunkai preferences of martial arts.
  9. Yes, it pretty well mimics the front kick motion. You just can't get your hips into the weight movement, though. Other than that, pretty much a match. True about the hips...I Didn't think about the hips...
  10. If you cannot afford a saya, how do you practice iai techniques with the bokken, using your hand or using your obi...thats how I use to do it before I could afford the saya.
  11. Does anyone know where I can find a good learning video of the Unsu kata...I would like to try and learn the movements on my own to perform at my teachers birthday...Anything not dont by Kanazawa San is perfect...his movies are just to fuzzy. Domo.
  12. Oh haha, I seee...once its all broken down its easier for me to be able to understand, thanks.
  13. The worst thing they will do is make you order one through them...which isn't so bad just tell them you cannot afford it.
  14. Has any one ever tried to use the iai techniques of Iaido using a jo, and if so what techniques have you done with it, im just curious as to how people train using the kobudo weapons in other various ways as such by symbolizing other weapons. (IE, Pentjjak Silat)
  15. Hmmm I never seen any resemblance when I practised Goju Ryu and Shotokan at the same time...I thought that Goju Ryu was more similar to Uechi Ryu and Shito Ryu...and also Uechi Ryu's origin is in Pangainoon kung Fu (Half hard half soft), And Goju Ryu is Hard and Soft in a similar terminology... So I think...(But im not sure)...that Goju Ryu and Uechi Ryu are sister styles.

Yeah haha I cannot see someone doing Pinan Shodan as a real fight...I mean seriously those last four shoto Uke...it would never end like that.
  17. If you can make it to the gym, the seated leg presses work extremely well. they work the quadriceps and calves and they tend to make your front kick look better and more effective.
  18. I think so...but century has ones without the arms for about half the price I think, and the armless ones work on your grip more so.

What I was taught Exercise form when done dynamically Encyclopedia of self defense An Art form What I tend to believe Its something traditional so we do it to incorporate the old with the new, to honor those that created the martial arts.
  20. Yes I seen on the documentary when he fractured wade's rib, I dont even think he put all of his strength in his elbow attack either.
  21. Oh where at in Japan...I been to Okinawa for a while but not to much in japan, I think I spend two weeks in japan, Kyoto to be exact. Traymond, we'll be in the far north of the main island, In the Aomori Prefecture. A little town called Misawa. Lots of farmland, little country towns and one US military base. If you can make it down to Camp Foster and are interested in some good karate training, look for either Wade Chroninger (Goju Ryu) or Eddie Erazo (Kenpo Karate and kickboxing). Wade Chroninger...wasnt he on the documentary about all the martial arts...what was it called...whuh...it even had uechi ryu in their...Hmmm...I forgot the name of that documentary...was it way of the warrior, I would like to learn from him. Yes he was actually. He's with the Mei Bu Kan Goju Ryu, a student of Sensei Ikemiyagi Masaaki. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXY4FgKlLok theirs someone I would want to learn from even more, Ikemiyagi Sensei.
