Ohhh thats cool. I learned some Karate for like to months in London, it was more shotokan style than anything but he insisted it was Goju and Judo mixed together, haha.

If Im sparring with someone thats atleast a green belt I go as hard as I can. And I usually win. With lower ranks such as White and Yellow belt I go easy on them, im not gonna send them flying with a full powered front kick...that wouldn't be nice, now would it...run them off before they are a green belt haha. I tend to go to hard sometimes at tournaments, like I knocked a 30 year old black belt out at one time, because he was picking on a younger black belt (Like 15 or so). So he came running at me and I just threw my foot up like I was doing an Axe kick, and brought it down right on top of hid head...luckily he was wearing head gear... But yes i love the full contact stuff, its extremely fun, and it truly demonstrated your skill level.

Is there a difference? I always understood that pattern and kata were essentially the same thing. Like using the word "form." A pattern to most "extreme" traditional Martial artists, is an insulting way of talking about a kata, because a pattern has no life, while kata needs life breathed into it. To me, it was all the same: kata=pattern=form=hyung, etc. In many TKD schools, the forms are referred to as patterns. We obviously don't use the term kata, simply because it is a Japanese term, but the Korean equivalent is the word hyung, and the English equivalent would be form or pattern. I have never heard of the exclusivity of any of the terms before. But hey, to each his own. Sorry its been a long time since I was in Tkd...but I thought the forms of Tae Kwon Do were referred to as Poomse?... And When I spoke about the traditional martial artist I meant the Traditional Okinawan Martial artist (Referring to the styles that I have been in).

Ow Joint Sprains...I dont get them any more...I dont keep my fingers out. I keep a clenched fist in sparring...just to avoid them... If your gonna spar open handed you need to strengthen them, with finger grips, such as the ones they use in eagle claw kung fu...a book by Leung Shum actually tells you where you can order them but I forget the name of the book and the name of the place...(My student is borrowing it from me for a while).

What rank is everyone here in this respective martial arts. I just look at myself as a Dan member, because I have three or four black belts which range from 1st - 4th degree. So when people ask me my rank, I just say a dan rank, and then I walk away. So whats everyones rank here?

Yah, I will give it a look on ebay first.

Our schedule use to be Tuesday Judo Thursday Karate Saturday Kobudo Why change I dont know...

Hmmm Most styles let you wear all black once your shodan, but I never understood why in judo only the blackbelts could wear the blue gi...it always made me a bit mad...haha
-
Hmmm Judo and Karatedo do not intertwine that well, since some people are better at the stances used in judo than Karate, this allows for people to learn what they are good at, and some people enjoy different things. If you just do it all in one day it can become boring, but when you mix it up, it is more fun. BUt we have had complaints about some people not wanting to do judo during karate class.

The style has been around since the 60's its not going to die down because of this its a franchise. The styles that are taught are incorporated into the style but we cannot teach 3-4 styles in a one hour day... I just want to know what everyone thinks about alternating class styles every week...

This is relatively common knowledge, that Funakoshi adopted the belt system from Kano. The two were known to be friends, and did spend time training together, I believe. I have never heard of this before. I'd think that it would get expensive after awhile, buying a new uniform after every promotion. If you are an instructor the wholesale rate for a gi is not expensive, the students can buy from you. Their is also dye thats works really well as well. As for me I own bout six different gi's Because I like to have three white sets to change back and forth to and a blue, red, and a black.

Well at times its hard. Like if you take the shotokan/ other martial arts but differant name Kata such as the Taihokyu (Aka Taikyokyu). Its a series of Low block and punch traditionally you would punch to the solar plexus, but in Taihokyu (one that is older but usually modified to be modern), they punch to the stomach. So you have to have a really keen eye to see modernizations in Kata that has been modified. Now when you look at a kata such as Karumpha from the Kajukenpo Style, it is extremely modern because you see traits of Goju and Shotokan hidden in the style. We do like 6-7 jodan juji uke's and palm heel strikes. So it is extremely modern, I have only seen a handful of traditional katas that incorporate more than two juji uke. And their are other smaller ways of telling, but just look at the movements and figure out if its a kata or a pattern.

The style itself is a mixed style with all the above listed in it, and at times we dont go over Judo for like 3 months, so he was trying to make everything equal, but I think we should just hold class daily, since he doesn't have a full time job, and nor do I. But our price is between 40-50 bucks a month for everything.
