Oh so you mean channeling it into your strength more than just emotionally throwing punches at a punching bag? -
Yeah, I once got deducted for having my hair in my eyes...But oh well, their is some favoritism in everything I guess.

I started doing these two weeks ago. I do 10x2 every other day with 40lbs weight. Ok but dont make yourself feel obligated that you only need to do twenty every other day. If you want, spend some time focusing just on the leg press and do some of the other leg exercises, try to work your legs all in one day and then your upper body the next day.. Right now, my strength training regime includes: 1. 10x2 seated leg presses 2. 10x2 squats 3. 10x2 arm presses (I think that's what these are called - where you lie on your back and lift up and down) 4. 10x2 shoulder exercises (where you're sitting up right and lifting an overhead bar down to your chest) 5. 10 assisted lunges (I hold onto something) with each leg 6. 10x2 dumbbell bent-over rows - free weights 7. 10 push ups (this is outside of the 10-20 pushups I do as warm-up for karate 5 days a week) 8. 10 leg raises (lying on your back and lifting your legs straight up and down) 9. 5x2 lower leg pull-ups (not sure what this is called but this is where I'm resting my elbows on pads and raising my legs to my chest/bending my knees). 10. Trying to do pull-ups but suck utterly - can't even manage to push myself up an inch. Even just hanging from the bar feels like the end of the world. 11. 10x2 crunches I know it's better to work with free weights than use the machines, but I have access to a free gym that unfortunately does not include barbells, so I use free weights where I can and machines the rest of the time. Do you guys have any suggestions? Should I modify my workout any? I actually like the machines more than the freeweights. I would work on your core for more Balance (Tandem). And your legs would be what I focus on, I go to the gym daily so I split it up one day for legs and the next for upper body and then I rotate it over and over again. It also helps to ask for help when your at the gym find a work out buddy to push you.

Yes I have heard about this also, especially in Iaido. IN terms of the Hi (bo hi if you prefer it?). That whistling would be the only Kiai a seasoned Iaidoka would need. Or even the look in the eyes of the iaidoka. In kendo they used the terms of "men" "do" "Ashi" "kote" and "Skee" As their kiai referring to where they were to strike their opponents, (On the kendo part im not sure all organizations go along that route of screaming their attacks destination would go).

I believe they are nessecary in kihongata and Yakusoke Kumite Only, Regular Kata and Kobudo, they are pointless...If a guys running at me with a pair of nichogama ima run...he doesn't need to kiai to scare me. in Kata for competition sure...but its not something I feel is required, I dont require any one that learns underneath me to use them. thats why i believe they should be in kihongata and yakusoke kumite, sinde they are obviously done in quick repetition at most times no more than four movements.

In my experiences I have done only extremely deep ibuki breathing like in the video I posted during Goju Ryu. Uechi Ryu made me feel like a snake, but I love their style. Kyokyushinkai had me doing some of it in the yoi and thats all. but none were as deep as in Goju Ryu.

I agree with you, it can be productive to the kyu ranks, but how does a dan rank look (if he is the head instructor) and he is trying to teach students self control (And what ever else) How does he look to his students?. I fight better (of course) when I am mad, but I always wondered how I looked (Foolish or not) Doing all my techniques. -
Ah I see, so it was pretty much the same deal with the Passai Vs. Bassai Deal. I find it funny how certain judges will deduct points from your score if you say it "wrong". I have had points deducted from me when I said Passai, and Bassai, so now I just roar it out completely inadherently...and no points get deducted, haha.

As you are a shotokan practicioner you should know that all katas are not always done the same, Karate is not Iaido, kata cannot always be done the same. If you look at the two different videos of Funakoshi Sensei doing Tekki Shodan, you will see what I am talking about. haha I feel like a fool...I just assumed when you wrote that their is only one way to do it, i thought you were one of those "over kill" japanese karateka...haha sorry.

Well the kiais are like that alot in the traditional arts. Especially Kobudo...when you walk into a traditional kobudo dojo (100% by the way). You will not hear any kiais in the dojo, on the tournament floor you will, but Kiai is not something really needed in martial arts, this is arguable of course with the practicioners of Kiaijutsu (Which I am ), but its not really needed in some katas, this is to produce a form of martial power thats so powerful and it shows that you do not need to kiai.

Ahh We just have a family video hear..no block buster or movie gallery for another...70 miles, haha. -
So is that Bassai Sho or Dai...because I notice alot of schools only use the Dai instead of the Sho...
-
Ah I see. Its odd whenever I hear Sagi I think of sageo...oh well. BUt thats makes a bit of sense when you put it that way. Ima start calling it that...its sounds unique.

Does any one know where I can buy a pair of sturdy traditional okinawan kamas under 22 dollars. Thats as low as I can seem to find them, but I remember buying mine for $19.99.... Its not for me since I now own a pair of shureido kama but their a gift for a student.

I gave my response in your other thread but... on a side note... its so funny how tsuru ashi dachi and sagi ashi dachi are extremely similar...why the name difference?
-
Well a suggestion is practice...but I dont usually tell people to practice not even my students. I tell them to visualize themselves in the Tsuru Dachi, and it actually helps them, but if you dont like visualizing, just do the two previous steps before the crane stance and the two steps after the crane stance...(incorporating the crane stance of course)., this should help, it helps me alot when ever I need to focus on one certain thing.
