  1. Not any more, I have arthritis in my ankle, I forget the scientific fancy name.
  2. I still have my first black belt, which my Hanshi Sensei Hand Dyed from my first white belt, and I have been using it ever since I was 14. I use it for all my dan level classes, and I refuse to buy another one, and I will not allow any one to embroider it or add any tape to it. Its a nice and solitary belt thats been humbled. I think your belt should be treated as a samurai use to treat his sword. That it is a part of you.
  3. I agree with this as well.
  4. Martial arts is about discipline, no? Martial arts is about tradition, no? (Atleast in traditional martial arts) Martial arts is about honor, no? This is a way of life to this man, and he wants everything to be perfect in his students. He doesn't care if the belt touches the ground if its still tied around your waist...but if your taking it off and it falls...than you should have been more careful... And grego...what grounds would their be for the courts to convict him of that? It was on his own property so he could also counter sue as trespassing since the class were over, and no one else was around as an eye witness at the time, they were all in the 'locker' room.
  5. Oooh. My sensei already told me he is gonna be going harder on me than all the rest because I already have a couple of black belts so he said hes gonna have his eye on me at all times...and he told me to be ready for almost anything thats pops up...
  6. oooh How does the fabric discourage the starch...is it an all together different material than most japanese gi's?
  7. Ah Yes that is a pretty good explanation. I think about the only kobudo weapon that can be entered into self defense would probably be the bo and the jo, I think thats why Alot of people start off with it, but it does seem to be around for the sake of tradition mostly.
  8. Oh haha I thought you were referring to Yamaguchi as his senior student...woops Sorry.
  9. Why do most korean styles use Pull over uniforms? I was always wondering that...thats one of the reasons why I never really got to big into the korean martial arts, was because of the pull over uniforms.
  10. On traditional Karate and Kobudo, specially specializing in the center of the tandem and other sorts of internal arts.
  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o-mrAV0nW0
  12. ...Atleast in my opinion of Iaido and Kendo
  13. No one is to hurt his feelings, because he will get you back for it 10 times worse. Just odd I must say.. His story also seems HIGHLY unlikely. There are a few traditional schools where I live as well, and they tend to tell stories like this, and things like their hands are certified weapons etc. this is all hokus pokus, you can train as long as you want, but you will never be Superman. Those type of stories got by in 80s during the Karate Kid times, but not today. But I will say that you have been respectful and responded to everyone here in a respectful manner, so that on the other hand has impressed me. You see when you respond in a disrespectful manner its my self that I am hurting...not any one else. His story does seem unlikey I will add. But to say that someones weapons are their hands, it not completely unlikely. I can break four japanese tiles with straight punch, to say that technique and precision is not a deadly weapon would be a false statement, the person on the receiving end of that blow would argue as well. And I dont think that aspect he is showing us is that we must not hurt his feelings, because that would seem some what childish and he is not a childish person. He is just a tad big arrogant, but show me a martial artist with good skill and technique that really isn't during a class or a competition.
  14. AN instructor of mine For Uechi Ryu has promoted three handicap people to black belt, although they cannot do everything as a someone else can...alot of the stuff is not needed. These people did not go through the kitae exercises, they did not have to do tameshiwari for testing, and they were allowed to do the Kata at a medium pace, with out alot of kime needed. But whats the real sense for that...its a sense of accomplishment for them and a proud achievment it is. It may take them longer sometimes...but thats the beauty of the arts, its an art for everyone.
  15. Well I am going to be testing for 5th Kyu soon in KI Kajukenpo. (Thats green belt), and I thought I would talk about it since its been a while since I last tested for a rank in general (About two years, never had the time). Does anyone remember their leap into 5th Kyu (I ask this because most schools recognize a 5th kyu as an advances student). I have three dan level ranks already and im working on # 4. Kajukenpo is a extremely laid back art, its mostly self defense application and Oyo bunkai of the katas.
  16. So I have had the liberty of being taught that Kobudo when broken down means "Way of the old Warrior"...how true this is, in terms of mental and spiritual aspects I do not know. Thats why i Created this, and would like to hear every ones point of view since my whole theory on this is just as what I said...an educated theory. Do you consider Kobudo to be a look into the past (If done correctly and traditionally not XMA style)...or do you look at it as a nonsense approach of the martial arts, and that it is an unneeded item to martial arts in terms of self defense?
  17. I heard on the news (All the way in Michigan), that they are trying to capture it and put it in a zoo type museum they are attempting to build... = (
  18. I enjoy all aspects of martial arts and anything orietnal thats related to the arts. This man is a man of etiquette more than his martial arts. He teaches Japanese flower Arranging and Tea Ceremony. His whole class from start to finish is as if you walked into a dojo in Japan or okinawa. I do see the measurements as Excessive...but let me state one more aspect. This same teacher kicked a potential student out of the dojo and banned him and told him to never come back...why....because he wore his socks on the dojo floor and he also had a cigarette tucked neatly behind his ear. He is a no nonsense kind of guy and if its not done the way he wants it..you dont have to come back and it would not hurt his feelings. Everything he does is taken seriously by him. He told a story...not sur how true it was, but as he was growing up in Japan he was robbed one day. His wallet had the equivalent of 2000 us dollars in his Wallet...He almost killed the three guys who attempted to rob him. They all had atleast one broken limb. And after this was done, he made all three of them post a public apology through the media. When we sign up to learn from him, he makes us sign a waiver...that no damage done to anyone in the dojo is relevant to his liability...so if we get hurt no matter what the cause is (Unless it ends up in death), we are responsible for it not him.
  19. The founder of Kyokushin Karate, Sosai Mas Oyama, learned Shotokan under Gichin Funakoshi and later on Goju Ryu under a senior student of Chojun Miyagi (he was eventually awarded an 8th dan by Gogen Yamaguchi). Oyama essentially combined Goju and Shotokan with jissen kumite to make Kyokushin. Oyama San also learned Goju from So Nei Chu and Masahiko Kimura. And Kimure also showed him Judo, which Sosai gained his 4th Dan in as well.
  20. So his style was Kyokyushin?...I never knew that really...
  21. Yes I know what hoshi is thank you. He is a hoshi.
  22. I liked # 5 and # 7
  23. I know the difference between a man who holds the rank Hoshi, and a man who doesn't. Such as a man who has the rank of Hanshi, and not of Renshi. I put my point of view in the higher ranks, of Hoshi and Hanshi. Those are my terms of the difference between a teacher of lessons and a master. And it is true that alot of these people here have alot more experience in life than I do. But just because they do have more experience in life does not exactly mean they have more experience in martial arts or in the point of views of other teaching styles, its simple a point of view, a person who has no martial arts background can have a point of view on what he or she thinks bout the instructor.
