What to do????
Red J replied to William K's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
110 classes for the next white belt step seems like a lot of classes. IMO, ranks should be tested when the material is ingrained and the skills are evident. It could take you a year to take 110 classes. Of course if there are not a lot of belts that would be fine. I used to take a system that only had white, green, brown and black and you were a white belt for what seemed like a long time, you made one or two stripes and then you went for green. For most that would take anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. $75 is not outrageous for tuition in a metro or suburban area. It really depends upon cost of living and what the school is offering you. With the three month commitment you won't get hurt (financially), just make sure you are sold before you re-sign. In the meantime keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities. -
Out of Shape, Out of practice

You will be amazed at how fast your skills will return. You are going to have to work for them, but that is where the passion comes in. Good luck. -
Wushu, gaining popularity?
Red J replied to Sensei Rick's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I don't see it getting a primetime spot in the lineup. Gymnastics, swimming and track and field are the bread and butter of the broadcast, not a "fringe" newcomer event. This holds true for many other sports as well (archery, equestrian, etc). I would be interested in seeing the coverage to check it out. As far as the popularity, I would not know. -
Proper roundhouse execution
Red J replied to Banshee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I use both the ball, instep, and shin depending on the target and situation. -
My initial question is how much ab work are you doing? It could be overtraining...Not really enough info.

I'll bite. I got my line from a book called The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. The teacher, appropriately named Soc (for Socrates), uses this line. From an MA standpoint it would be to achieve a "no mind" state when practicing the arts. When you can do this you rely on senses and you react instead of think.

OK, Then how about a 150 pound blackbelt versus an 320 lb. NFL noseguard? Just kidding...Don't jump me for that.... This thread has been done a few times on this forum.

Get a good pair of shoes. That is critical.
-
Alternate response: So that would explain your condition.
-
You do karate?....I used to have numb chucks (sic). Response: I hope they were the kind made out of rubber.
-
Alternate response: Man, you have been watching too much Happy Days (reference Ralph Malph stating "my hands are registered weapons....")
-
Ok, the grandmother of them all.... Are you ready?.... So you're a black belt huh? Did you have to register your hands a lethal weapons with the FBI? Response: No, blackbelt registration is now under the Department of Homeland Security.

This is just as important as the training. That's why I only did each body part twice a week. I saw good results from my workouts and followed the training wisdom of that era. You should do a search for a workout that fits your goals. Do you want size, strength, or both? That will point you to workouts that are bodybuilding, powerlifting, or a mixture of each.
-
You could be overtraining. Try doing each body part twice a week. Back in the day I used to do: M, TH Chest, Shoulders, Tri T, FR Back, Bi W, S Legs Sunday rest Abs 4 days a week

They probably haven't taken Aaron because they ran out of Dharma diapers... The killing could be subtle, kind of like Jack's decision to save his wife over the other ER patient. Is it Wednesday yet?
-
Maybe they take the kids because they are either underage therefore off limits to this experiment or they are not appropriate subjects because they haven't killed someone yet (the killer theory).

"My five year old junior is a black belt at (local mcdojo)" Response: "He must really be a Kindergartener's worst nightmare." LOL

The symbol is the I Ching Octagon. Parts of it are also found on the Korean flag (hint). It's no mistake that it is there. Of course there was also a famous Indian monk whose nickname is Dharma as well (Bodhidharma).

Mr. Echo fears no evil. The smoke backed off. I think he may have assumed the role of the priest after the plane took off and changed his life. This may account for the "others" trying to take him on the beach. Everyone seems to have killed someone in their stories. Echo and his brother Sayid in Iraq with officer Kate with father, exboyfriend, Sawyer and the guy in Australia Jack by picking his wife and not Shannon's father in the ER Ana Lucia and the guy at the bar Will it end up that the other losties also have simular paths? Did Locke kill his dad? What about Charlie? Did he have a part in someone's overdose? Did Jin kill someone in his mob job? Makes you wonder.

Facing a Dilema

Your daughter is only a teenager once. Reality check! You need to make her a priority and go from there. -
Is Slow-Paced Cardio a good way to burn fat?
Red J replied to DaChroniclez's topic in Health and Fitness
The conversation bit is a good measure given that you have a decent level of fitness. If not, you will have to work towards that goal. Run/walk is a good strategy to get there. -

Here's an article to better explain how fat metabolism starts to slow once you get past the optimum heart rate for a fat burning workout. My understanding is that the when you are at a moderate pace you burn more fat and as you increase you start burning more carbs. Read on. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-53-85-0-628,00.html By the way, the 3.5 mph hour that your author recommends is for a treadmill with a significant incline. Walking/running without that incline you would need to increase the speed.
