  1. OK, my quote was from Napoleon Dynamite. None other than REX...
  2. OMG! Just another repeat! They are killing me with repeats...AHHHHHH!
  3. Chinese Boxing is one of various terms used to describe what we know in the West as Kung Fu. Exactly!
  4. Sit it out with the legs and become more proficient with your hands. Go see a knee guy and rehabilitate. Good luck.
  5. Most home policies would not cover you if they could prove that this was a result of a commercial endeavor. If you and a few buddies are training, then that's a different situation, but if you are running a school out of your house then you better look into an umbrella policy or commercial rider.
  6. Please clarify your statement. Does this style have formal grappling instruction within its curricular framework or do you literally mean it takes years to actually see the grappling applications? Thanks.
  7. I think if you walk into a school and they say that you will be a black belt in two years, you better think twice. A good school may give you an average range but will not make promises or guarantees of timelines.
  8. I don't know if it is worth repairing at this point. If you try to fix it there is a good chance it will break while training because of the amount of stress that will be placed at the point of the break. IMO, you should retire it and buy a new one.
  9. I like this response as the exception to the above statement. I belong to a school where promotions are based on ability. I came in as a brown in another style and was ranked as an intermediate student. I quickly learned the curriculum (I already had all the strikes, kicks, grappling, etc.) and tested for black in just over 2.5 years (if you add in my other training it would be @ another 3 years). Conversely, some of my friends took five to seven years to make black. I have a friend that has been training six years that just made brown. No promotions are made just for having time in, you have to have the skill and material.
  10. Welcome. Train hard!
  11. The "garage" dojos that I have been part of are usually word of mouth and selective on who gets to train. So advertising, insurance and taxes are non-existent.
  12. I trained in my backyard for almost 2 years and then trained in college in a park. Those were the good ole days.
  13. Do both running and sprinting. You can run for 20 minutes, then do your interval speed work (sprints, fartleks, tempo, whatever for 20 minutes) and then finish with more running for 20 minutes as your cool down. Then go hit the bag. Good luck.
  14. I can only comment on the name... Nothing serious should ever have "dope" in the middle of it. I could just see the Disney character Dopey at the grand opening. Not the kind of image you want to have. I mean what are these guys smoking? Don't answer that....
  15. Agreed. You can see the animal "traits" in many different styles. However, they are not always taught as such. For instance, precise finger strikes to vitals are characteristic of the snake, most styles have something like this, but do they call it snake? Probably not unless the system has a Chinese base.
  16. Great reason KK. I agree. Also it teaches balance, coordination, how to move your center, footwork etc. It also can be a great warmup and cardio workout. Kata is not the end all, however it is an important part of my equation.
  17. You can get one from Amazon.com as well.
  18. Like a well respected member that I know has in his signature, "If it works, use it"! So I did!
  19. I know exactly how you feel cause then it's: Party time!
  20. I'm 175 rolling with a guy the other night who was 245, not in great shape or skill, but strong. My best strategy was to let him move me and wear himself out trying to put something on me(we were starting from knees). Well, I eventually moved my way around and got the choke. Now if he was in shape and of the same skill level, he gets a 70 lb. advantage. That's hard to overcome.
  21. Caesar Salad, potato and a green vegetable. I'm not sure about the wine. Seriously, I would recommend a grappling style to compliment your standup game.
  22. KF technology never ceases to amaze me. Cool deal!
  23. OK, the idea of this thread is to post an obscure or well known martial arts quote from a movie or event. The next poster guesses and puts up the next quote. I'll go first. Bow to your Sensei! BOW TO YOUR SENSEI! This was an easy one. You get the idea. Now get busy!
  24. Yes! Mystery solved. Good work Hurricane! There is not much you can do if someone hits you in the solar plexus as it temporarily affects your diaphragm and ability to breath. The best advice is to block and protect that area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_plexus
