Staff Article: The Truth About Ki
Red J replied to monkeygirl's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Like Mr. T. says, "I pity the fool who doesn't believe in the power of Ki". -
Absolutely. This is a fundamental of any MA that I have ever taken, and any sports that I have played. It also ensures that when you do a technique where you bend your knees that you don't fall victim to letting your head move forward to become an easier target.
-
Agreed, and by teaching it can be as simple as passing down the art not necessarily teaching in having or owning a school.

I'm not a fan of the video concept by any means, but you actually you have to test for each rank. It may not in the marketing fine print but that's how it works. There is another guy that will give you rank with the DVD without ever having to test in front of anyone. He will remain nameless. (Sorry for being off topic.) Good response, I would add that they should have the highest level of understanding and application along with a contibution to the arts through dedication, teaching, etc. It can't just be someone who knows what they are doing.

20 years is a guideline only for a seriously talented person. I know that GM Villari (Shaolin Kempo) does not give out 5ths to just anyone. I don't know any that are under 40, but I have heard of a few, but even they had almost 20 years in. To test for black, you have to be at least 16 and that could take from 3.5-7 years. Even then time is no guarantee for a rank.

I'm paying $80 a month and can attend up to 5 days a week. KK75 is right. Depending on where you live can determine how much you pay. I would expect that places with a high cost of living would be more expensive.

This scared me into knowing how lethal my practice is...
Red J replied to Mr. Mike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Or a convicted rapist with a history of domestic battery. I would not let my daughter be put into that situation again. What you did was mild. Now do something and get him out before you really regret it. -
Welcome to the forums.

Chi-Gung, Anyone?
Red J replied to Coonaxus's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I did a Chi-Gung exercise with a Master the other day. He happened to be teaching our class for the night and gave us an exercise. It didn't seem like much but I felt it for the next 2 days. -
Welcome to the thread. I need to get Delta1 to come back and rejoin our conversations. He was the resident AK ambassador. I hope we can get some of the dialogue back on track.

Walking into a dojo should never feel like you are being pitched like you are buying a car. Keep looking! *If you guys look under the Karate section, we have started many Kenpo/Kempo threads that you may want to contribute to. Delta1 and I wanted to get a kenpo section at one time and it was contigent on posting in the Karate section under the subtitle of Kenpo. Check out some of these threads. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15763 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15857 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15764 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15815 http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15931 If you guys keep posting in this format, we can revitalize the kem/npo efforts at KF. Then we can look at world domination.

There is nothing like a high ranking black belt doing the first kata. Poetry in motion. It's something to strive for and there is only one way to get there.

Once he had the attacker on the ground, and executed the "hammer" fist to the head, he should have stopped as the threat was no longer there. The breaking of the arm is unfortunate as he is basically taking the guy "out of commission" for a minumum of 6-8 weeks or longer, depending on the fracture. I have seen a simular tech done from where a person has trapped the punch towards the right hip, and has the opponent off balance, bent forward at the hips, with the arm reaching out (usually by a check kick, arm manipulation or both). The defender then does a left crescent to the head, continues over the outstretched arm and comes down with the arm between his legs in a perfect elbow break postion, finishing with just about any kind of hand stike or stomp. It's very nasty.

LOOKING FOR NEW ART
Red J replied to martialman101's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
If philosophy is what you are looking for, you probably need to find a traditional Japanese or Okinawan based art. Shaolin Kempo and other "kenpos" are typically considered eclectic styles with more emphasis on scientific principles and less on philosophy. It could also be just your particular instructor/school. The depth part is probably there it just takes a while to discover it. Start by taking a look at your material and break down the concept that you are learning and apply it to various situations and attacks. Practice with a buddy outside of class to hone your techniques against right and left handed attacks from different angles. Practice against front punches, roundhouse punches, boxer's crosses etc. You will start to "see" the potential in what you are learning once you really understand it. It is like a onion, and you need to dig deeper. I am amazed by my interpretation of techniques from when I first learned them until now. It is constantly evolving. -
I am a self proclaimed Diet Coke fiend. Actually, about one a day. Maybe two on a good day.

Love the name! Welcome. Question: What is the lineage for ACK?

Here are a few links. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=14241&highlight=kajukenbo http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=13148&highlight=kajukenbo http://www.kajukenbo.org/history/ http://www.kajukenboinfo.com/ Ka - Karate (Tang Soo Do) Ken - Kenpo Ju- Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Bo - Chinese boxing (kung fu) My understanding is that the Chuan Fa branch (there are 4 major divisions) has more of a Chinese influence to it than does the more traditional groups. -

If you find out any specifics on this you should post it. Maybe Pineapple has some insight as he practices Kajukenbo. -

Training on a torn rotator cuff. Your thoughts.
Red J replied to PhDPeddler's topic in Health and Fitness
Exactly. I just got over this injury and because I did the exercises and took it easy on the pushups and the grappling, I was able to continue to train. It took about six months to get it back to where it was before I injured it (full range of motion). Funny thing, I don't know when it happened, it just showed up. -
If you are working out, wash your uniform. I've never heard of a personal hygiene sacrifice as a way to enlightenment.

One of my favorite expressions is that positive thinking works most of the time, but negative thinking works all the time. I.E. Attitude is everything.
